God!! anyone in the audience saw that movie?? She deserve a better ovation, that performance redefine the word apotheosis!!! Charlize, you are a Goddess!!!
Even though I was rooting for Diane Keaton's amazing performance in "Something's Gotta Give," there's no denying that Charlize Theron's work in "Monster" was superlative!
Great movie, she was awesome. Not complaining, but it woulda been nice if she'd said something for the victims of the murders that made this film possible.
Charlize is truly legendary, in such a precious way.. in which she can be compared to any creative like there are 5 year olds who can be compared to her.. their completely one with their energy and dreams.
What if Keisha Castle-Hughes had won? The Oscar was well deserved, but Adrien Brody had a chance of getting ready to kiss a thirteen year old girl. That would be awkward O.o
I'm curious: Does anyone know why Cristina Ricci didn't attend the ceremony? So sad she wasn't nominated, but shouldn't she be there applauding and all?
ove charlize theron shes gonna be the biggest movie star in hollywood in 2012 with Prometheus, her Golden Globe(and possible Oscar) nomination for Young Adult and Snow White and the Huntsman all in the one year :) a new queen of hollywood...anyone else agree??
@gucynthia Well, I bet you somewhere deep down inside she wanted to sort mention her name on stage. But she couldn't, you have to keep in mind that it wouldn't be a bad idea (after all, she would have never won an oscar without her) and at the same time, you have to feel for the families of the victims. Thanking someone for killing your (husband, son, brother, nephew, cousin, etc) wouldn't actually be a good idea now, would it.
She deserved the OSCAR but this speech seems soooo incredibly fake. It doesn't take a movie maker to get that she preared it well, looking at her mirror dozens time to see how it was. Ok many others did it, but she did it so that she could not show any REAL part of her inner personality... She probably prefers to hide it, because she is too vulnerable. Sometimes when actors act, like she did, they show much more of themselves than they think....But of course, this is just a guess.
@fabzuc what are you talking about? this speech was incredibly real. the part where she crying thanking her mother? her boyfriend? seemed incredibly genuine to me. she was emotional, together, perfect. and didnt make a blabbering mess like some others ( cough halle berry cough)
@fabzuc this is kinda Charlize's personality- if you havent been fallowing her career- she is really good at being emotional and rational. i think she probably had a mental note of the people she was going to thank obviously- but i dont think the emotion behind it and especially the last bit to her mother, country, and boyfriend was in any way fabricated or not real.
@fabzuc I thought that was one of the most genuine speeches. You think that moment with her mother was fake? That was real. She's been through a lot with her.
how come she didn't mention aileen??!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean i love charlize she was amazing in that movie and a well deserved oscar but WHAT ABOUT AILEEN ??
Can't wait to see her in Young Adult. I hear that film's a winner and that she is brilliant in that as well. Hollywood needs to appreciate this great mixture of talent and beauty.
After watching Monster, I have to say that an Oscar isn't simply enough for this lady. She deserves something as powerful as the performance she gave.
@bombayg Correction: This IS the most deserving oscar win ever. Pathethic that this didn't get a standing ovation. Theron's oscar win -- and I dare say it, is more deserving than any of Katharine Hepburn's oscars, Vivien Leigh's oscar for "Streetcar Named Desire", you name it. I'm not the only one who views it this way (see oscar blogs such as Sage Slowdive and Fritz and the oscars)
FUCK she's gorgeous! I have a little poster of her when she modeled for Dolce & Gabbana, and I kept on looking at the picture, then at the movie Monster and couldn't fucking believe it was her!! She did absolutely amazing, and said "fuck" at least 1000 times. ;)
I don't get it. Nothing about Aileen Wuornos? Even few words? And everybody are okay with that? Hollywood people are heartless monsters. Charlize Theron is a real monster we have to fight with. Not the beautiful and brave Aileen.
@narkissos1994 you are insane. beautiful and brave aileen? do not idolize a murderer and worthless woman such as Aileen. Charlize did her more service in playing her in a compassionate way than anyone in her life. do you thank hitler? interesting character maybe, someone to be ever thanked, NO.
@narkissos1994 What is she supposed to say about Aileen? "Oh thank you for killng so many people so I could be in this movie about you". She's not going to thank a killer, she thanked everyone that was involved with the movie which is what most winners do. So you're a supporter of Aileen? Awesome.
@narkissos1994 Because she killed 7 innocent people. Why on earth would you wanna Thank a cold-blooded murderer? Remember, the victims families are still alive and around!
@MundyArtStudio .. yeah it is kind of sad that Heath would go with a friend of his rather then his wife, or someone that means alot to him, I mean yeah Noami is a good friend but it really was a low point in his life before he died.
@TheUnbeholden You do realize that this event was in February, 2004? At that point in his life he was in a longterm-relationship with Naomi Watts, and hadn't even met the woman who he'd later come to have a child with: Michelle Williams (his wife, who you were referring to).
One of the greatest performances of the decade. On top, along with Naomi Watts in 'Mulholland Dr.', 'Winslet in 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', Staunton in 'Vera Drake', Cotillard in 'La Vie En Rose', Dench in 'Notes on a Scandal' etc. It's indeed a pity that Bullock for her lousy mediocre performance got a standing ovation and brilliant examples of acting like Charlize's didn't.
@JohnTripinTokyo I agree with your list of the best female performances of the decade, although I haven't seen Mulholland Dr. yet so need to watch that soon. I would also add Amy Adams in Junebug. Although it was a supporting role, she was fantastic. And what is the saddest part is that out of the performances you listed only 2 of them won Oscars. Charlize Theron's performance is one of the greatest in cinema history!
I thought she was just another pretty face actress and most others wouldnt go through the transformation she went through to play the role, well deserved oscar.
