This is the best I've ever heard him. Heard him live at the Met a couple times more recently, and I'm sad to say the quality of performance wasn't nearly as high as in this video
Pity he's wearing make-up like a newly-plastered wall, but his singing is deep and powerful and effortless. I agree with gillesparis09 there's no excuse for classifying Alagna in anything other than the top tier of tenors.
We must thanks to the tenors for share their voices with the world, but before that, we must thanks to the writters and composers who made the tenor's made it possible and joyfull to sing it, without them the tenors couldn't just exists, and also joyfull for us, the listener!
Thanks G.Puccini. G.Rossini, G. Donizetti, G: Verdi, V.Bellini, R. LeonCavallo, P. Mascagni, and thousend more from 1500 - Present
What an amazingly beautiful voice on an equally amazingly beautiful man. Thank goodness Luciano Pavarotti gave him a chance to sing at the Voice Competition. And thanks to Alagna for winning that competition. Gorgeous...all the way around.
The very first time I heard this video, I broke down and cried at the beauty of the melody and the bittersweet poetry of the words....only Alagna's performance of this aria has ever done that...he is truly something else.
I strongly believe that he sings this aria better than pavarotti......although he is not the greatest tenor to ever walk the stage, he is a very strong opera singer and inteeprets the songs well......and I think that he will be remebered as such.
Of the tenors still living, I think his is the best version of this I have heard..
Its true he is not de Stefano or Pavarotti, but its not fair to compare him to every tenor who ever recorded this aria and then deride him for not being as good. I am sure he does not claim to be.
Wheter he sings correctly or not doesnt matter, its the result that matters.
Its basically like a striker in football, he plays rubbish every game but still scores three goals which wins the match, does that make him a good striker or not??
Do you like Picasso? I dont, I dont see anything there at all, but lots of people do.
Leave Alagna alone, I like his versions of this aria, he hits the notes for me, pardon the pun.
I bought this Corelli-recording, and i don´t know if he knew want he was singing about: love, passion, desperation...instead of showing all these feelings, he hold the high note over I don´t know how many seconds long. Sure, he had a wonderful voice, and the audience always loves the high notes, but I was disappointed, Corelli was imo during this performance to full of himself.
LucianoKraCore, I think Alagna would improve very much whith your lessons (I chek your lessons are in all Alagna's videos). Where is it possible to hear you singing opera? You must be a "master".
they have to be actors??. If you think he will improve with ¨my lessons¨ it is because you are an opera singer too??...The ones who didn´t like him singing aida at la scala, are opera singers too??.
why you compare a legend, a great opera tenor like pavarotti to this singer Algna, I am not in favor of LucianoKraCore, because he is too critic, but some things he is right.
You are so controlled by publicity my friend, then If KraCore is not a singer to say YES, Algana is great, he has to be a teacher?, If KraCore is no a teacher , you mean that Algana is good just for YOUR lessons then?, come on guy , wake up!. Are you a techer then?, is that you whoTaught Alagna to sing without any technique?.You ruined his voice with your lessons irretrievably, how much for your lessons?.
dolci bacioooooo,,, gola not held, ....when he sings ¨disperaaaaaatooooo¨, the ¨aaa¨ and ¨oooo¨ is gola again, not held ...his last ¨amatooooooooooooooo¨ is awful , that is not a pure operatic sound. He is an ¨ok¨ tenor.

I love when people blame everything on "jealousy". It's an opinion, and frankly I too feel that he is really, REALLY light for this heavier stuff (Tosca, Aida etc.). He's a light French tenor and I really feel like he has too nice an instrument to ruin it with stuff that is too heavy for him.
yeah well, everybody agree on that, he's wrecking his voice for singing heavier roles...but this is just ONE aria, really sang beautifully, almost perfect
I will say right away, I don't think Roberto Alagna is a great tenor and when he sang in May at the Barbican,London, he was most disappointing. I must say though, that he sings this aria beautifully so he is capable of great things. Let's hope he will not continue to sing roles unsuited to his voice.
Just that he's a lighter instrument. It's roles like Cavaradossi and Radames that are totally starting to screw him over. He sings this very well here, but more recently he's not as good.
Great , are you sure great??...Notice when he is through with this. Molto vibrato...amatoooo tantooooooo lavitaa..bad held..Very tired, out of breath.
Are you sure? He seems fine to me. I think he's doing it for dramatic affect. I also dont know why alot of vibrato is bad. His vibrato isnt fast or slow. It's between 6 and 7 oscillations per second, just like it should be.
He has difficulty with the highs because he doesn´t know how to hold them, he comes from dowm the ¨notes¨ to ¨¨up¨¨¨them¨...<when he says discioglieeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaa, that sound is too open, when he says ¨fugïiiita¨ the ¨iii¨ is pure GOLA not held...throat.
He sang the high C in che gelida manina, didn't he? I understand if the "golden age" of singing has passed, but it's annoying when all everyone does is shit on "new" tenors.
I think with your repeated lessons, Alagna would improv very much. Where is it possible to hear you singing this same area ? It must be an unrepeatable experience.
