@ssmusic214 Russia really saw State Capitalism in the USSR with very little genuine communism (workers controlling and distributing their own surplus labour). By and large the workers requested state intervention and went to work as normal under Party Apparatchiks [Commissars] as managers which allowed the Bosheviks to centralise power. The State absconded with the surplus. The task for socialism seems to be to build grass-roots collective enterprises which control their own surplus labour.

@luckyswine "genuine communism" is the fantasy, fairy tail that never existed or will exist in reality. And there never was any "surplus" of anything in USSR. And Party Apparatchiks never heeded any "requests" from anybody to do whatever they wanted in USSR.

@ssmusic214 a) a surplus is produced whenever anybody does any kind of work - see Marx's definition of surplus value in Capital Vol.1 b) there were limited examples of genuine communes existing in Russian farms (as there had been prior to the Bolshevik seizure of power) but on the whole the State assumed its governing and controlling role, agreed. c) In the 18th century true democracy was the fairy tale that never existed or would exist in reality d) plenty of communes exist in the West.
