He was called to Makkah just to lead Taraweeh. He was not meant to actually lead any other salaah, but it so happened that he had to that night, not sure why except that it was an honor from Allah bestowed upon him. :)

Yes, Sheikh Hudhaify also led in Makkah, as did Sheikh Thubayty. Sheikh Juhany and Mu'ayqali also were Imaams in Masjid al Nabawi for Taraweeh before they were transferred as permanent Imaams in Makkah. :)
