For those that are not aware (judging by the comments I've read so far.) This is a sign of respect from your master, hence the handshake right after.

It proves that the master sees his pupil as a credible fighter, and would view him in a fight as his equal.

Antonio Inoki (The man with the amazing chin) is a well respected shoot fighter, martial artist and wrestler. Whom also has the honor of getting in the ring with Muhammad Ali in the early 1970's.
