Pretty much the same approach with what they are doing in New Zealand atm.

Unfortunately a big low pressure weather system caught a couple of them out. With the hull high in the water the captain lost the fight against the wind. Two other ships almost ran aground that day.

@ballznall6969 Believe it or not but my father was the acting (marine)pilot on the night the pasha bulker went up, He recalled screaming the captain, telling him he would be the next sigma if he didnt get going. At that stage all bar 3 ships had relocated. Its interesting to note that two other ships almost came adrift near bar beach and down near dudley however they were able to leave in a gap in the storm. By the time the Pasha realized they were in trouble, it was too late.

It was carrying coal, the crew were evacuated during the storm . The helicopter here was dropping a pump to pump fuel/engine oil up from the lower tanks.

The ship was towed off the beach and repaired.

lol i was there when it ran aground, the waves were crashing over it completely and at one point you couldn't see it at all because of the spray from a wave.

eventually after threee weeks they pulled it out with it out with sum massive 64 m long tug boat. it was pretty epic though!

"Beaching" is made on purpose, for example if your rudder breaks or something, and in order to avoid crashing into rocks or causing an uncontrolable oils spill you beach your vessel. If your lucky it only suffers minor damages and can be towed back to sea after reparation.

If they are thinking of refloating that, they have to put up a barrier on the port side (left) of the ship. This will cause the sand to slowly build up in front of the barrier, and erode from under the ship. After about a month of erosion, they can then pull the ship backwards into deeper water.

Its not an oil tanker - its a bulk carrier. It moves ore and other "bulk" stuff. It was empty when it stranded. The wind and waves forced it ashore because it was too high in the water (too little ballast) and the engines could not turn the ship.

A lot of Australians were angry because of the accident. But they dont mind earning a healty buck exporting ore. Cant have it both ways I guess.

ah no actually the reason that us australians were angry was that in the event of a storm it is compulsory for all large carriers waiting to dock to move further out to sea so they don't get beached. this vessel ignored those laws and stayed in close so it could get further up to queue to be loaded up. and this is what happened to it. its the fault of the captain for not obeying instructions giving by the new south wales maritime

Exactly - that was what happened.... there was a small leak of oil, which they fixed up rather quickly and some week or so later they got some massive tugs and tried to pull it out. It failed a couple of times, but they got it out in the end. The owners of the vessel told the public that they would fit the bill, but some months later the tax payer was stuck with it.

Another sad fact is that this spot was a good surfing area prior to this incident, now the break has been ruined!
