  • Sounds quite tinny compared to using a mixer or a quality sound card. Does the sound get more full and bassy when you bring the microphone closer to your mouth?

  • I have even used my blue Mikey or my Zoom h2 (does 5.1) attached to my camcorder and then replacing the audio in my video editor... But that's a hassle. I'm glad to find YOUR solutions because they have quality without the editing and lip-sync issues! :-)

  • On the iPad, I have used the camera-adapter kit, which turns the dock port into a standard USB jack...and guess what? It lets me use the Samson condensor USB mica, as well as the Blue Snowball!! Not an elegant solution like yours, but very usable. I thought I'd share that, being my experience, if it maybe of use to you.

  • however the iPad and iPhone 4 have a new change in the configuration ofntheir 30-pin dock connection, so I've had to keep the iPhone 3G I was originally using. I wish it was compatible with my iPhone 4, because it has sound quality with absolutely NO hiss, pre-amp noise, or any other artifacts.

  • yeah I found your YouTube videos by the links on lifeisaprayer. I really am reaping the benefits of your test configurations, and REALLY appreciate the ability to hear, in real-time, the effect and benefit of using these external mic solutions. I had been using an Bkue Mikey--I'm sure you're familiar with that--and it gives UNRIVALED *stereo* sound quality when connected to an iPhone or iPod.

  • Tank you VERY MUCH! Your demonstrations on what works and the connections you use have been VERY helpful in helping me decide what gear to purchase and make plans on what works and doesn't, without costly experimentation.

  • @LelandHendrix - Someone has to be the gullible one who buys every single mic and cable, then tests them all ;-) Be sure to check out my website (linked in the description) for more info about other options.

  • improved sound.. but pretty thin..

  • Hi Jeff !

Thanks for sharing all your tests, that's really valuable to me.

In this video, is the mic plugged right into the KV adapter, which is itself plugged into the iPhone ? No preamp involved ?

And if so, do you apply any level boost on the signal in the app you are using for recording or do you get a near 0 dB signal on input speaking that way ?

    Thanks a lot !

    Raphaël

  • @MancingDolecules - No preamp whatsoever - this is straight in from the SM58 (that's why I'm so close to the phone/camera).

I think I may have applied iMovie's normalization filter before posting (thus a tiny bit of noise in the bg).

  • I'm trying to do exactly what you're doing here, and I've got it working using my mixer as a preamp but I want to make it portable/simple. I know you explain what cable you are using but what is the exact one on their site? I can only find one with the built-in attenuator that gives it -22db PAD (I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of what I want to do) and another one without the attenuator, but it would still require a preamp of some sort. Am I missing something?

  • Could you try out your Shure SM58 Mic and this KV Adapter with 2 different XLR cable lengths and let us know the results?

    A. 12 or 15 ft XLR Cable

    B. 25 ft XLR Cable

    Thanks,

    George

  • @teledeal - I've used a 25ft XLR cable, and it worked great.
