Dennis wear what you like as you should not change a thing when there is that much beauty flowing from your soul in your music. Love all of it, and so much respect for you and all who bring us this mele. God Bless you.
Kirk Hinkley (and so looking forward to seeing son David at slack key masters on Aug. 3rd at Masters of Slack Key at Napilli Kai.
BTW, I was living in Hawai'i at he time of the great music revival and knew Gabby Pahinui, and the Makaha Sons of Niihau when they were kids. Love the stand you took for Wainae, and wish you the very best, Looking forward still to some great solo slack key album like Pua'Ena. Honored by your attention! Congrats too for your grand child, Bless you and your family! I am also very spiritual, never mind the denomination! It has been a wonderful career to follow!
Hawaiian cowboy, all right, I concede and apologizes. I am a great admirer of yours way back to Sons of Hawai'i (E Hihiwai is so great). I admire the stand you took for your culture. I am pretty sure I have all of your albums. including vinyls.
Aloha everyone.........hope you like the songs and video. I wrote this one back in the 1980's. Pretty Brown Eyes was a song for my wife and is sung in the video by Jon Yamasato of Pure Heart fame. At this writing, I am going to be inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame on Sept. 27, 2009. BTW to Leuolai, I am a real ex-cowboy and proud of it, thus the Paniolo (cowboy) wear.
Mahalo for stopping by (both YouTube & KCC). It was so wonderful to be able to soak all this wonderful music in. Hopeing to see you at KCC again in the future!!
My apologies for sounding so self-righteous and lecturing, and thanks for taking it well. Indeed, thanks for contributing this video. I checked, unfortunately Pua'Ena, including his all time best "Ipo Lei Manu", from Dancing Cat Records, is not available as mp3 on either iTunes or Amazon. But in fact a few pieces on the 'Ohana album, available as mp3 on both sites, such as "No Ke Aha", " 'Ohana Slack Key" and the meditative " 'Ike Ia Ladana" do showcase well the slack key beauty of his work.
Again mahalo for the information. I didn't feel you were being self-righteous or lecturing at all. As a person who did not grow up here, I've really thrown myself into the cutlure & life here in Hawai'i and enjoy learning more and getting it straight from people whom have been around this all their lives.
Dennis Kamakahi, as most true slack key masters, does a lot better playing ALONE, as he does on his best CDs. The other guys only add noise, basically. The outfit is not that cool and no so hawaiian either! He should NOT look like a country singer. I love his recorded music. particularly the album Pua'ena. It is sweet that he did one with his son on the Uke ('Ohana), but if anything it stresses the differences in talent and feeling between the older and the younger. Life experience weighs in!
what is the name of this song? by the way, i LOVE uncle dennis :) he just came to our school last week to play music, and my friends and i opened for him, as well as george kahumoku and richard ho'opi'i... 3 geniuses of Hawaiian music
