@isuckaman Quality was not yet an issue at this point in time. That wasnt until about 1975. What's more important, though, was that they knew the market and knew what people wanted, then delivered it.
@a7x76 The music is from the 1970 commercial. They werent using this music in 1979. If someone dubbed the music over the 1979 commercial, that's probably what you saw.
@Jared1452 Yep, agree with you there! But the reason they made the decisions they did was because they simply chose to keep the brands that were making a profit AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME. Pontiac wasnt one of them unfortunately.
@ENCOMAN The 70' T/A and 69 H/O were 2 of the best GM cars ever made. If I had the chance to own only 2 cars of the muscle car era, those would be my choices! You done good! :o)
1970 What a great year!!! President Richard Nixon signs a measure lowering the voting age to 18, The United States gets its first female generals Anna Mae Hays and Elizabeth P. Hoisington, Super Bowl IV The Kansas City Chiefs beat the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings 23–7, Black Sabbath's debut album, Black Sabbath released. Oh and the best thing that year. I was born!!!!! :)
@stimeeee 1970 was the last great year, but Nixon created the EPA in 1970 and forced 1971 cars to run on unleaded gasoline. That caused HP to drop like a rock the next year. We were still on the gold standard and gas was 36 cents a gallon. In 1973, carmakers were forced to put in energy absorbing bumpers on the fronts of cars. In 1974, states were forced to lower their speed limits to 55 mph. The 1970s were the dark age of motoring. The veil wouldn't be lifted until the mid 1980's.
That is such an attractive car, I would do anything to help save pontiac, I still can't believe they're doing away with them and there's nothing that can be done to save them. :( I personally think they should have done away with Saturn, I still don't think they've come out with attractive cars except the sky, which still isn't as good looking as the pontiac solstice.
But what I think is that as time passed, they got in new managers who cared more about profits and saving money (e.g. by sharing so much across the different divisions), guys who weren't true car enthusiasts. The way simplified everything reflected that. They might as well have been selling light bulbs. I can only tell you that when I was younger, we thought of Pontiac, Olds, etc. as totally different cars; we didn't think "oh, a Pontiac, that's just another GM car".
They went and focused on trucks and forgot about the car lines- I guess they thought the cars would sell themselves without advertizing and more frequent model changes? But of the divisions, I would have thought Pontiac would have survived and not Buick. Pontiac still had an identity as the sporty division for younger people. However they also rebadged cheap Chevys as Pontiacs (e.g. Sunfire) instead of trying to be more upmarket (e.g. in the 70s offering a car like the Grand Ville).
they started sharing bodies, and then even engines between divisions, the auto magazines no longer rated them as competitors. Instead they rated all the J cars for example as one car. They erased the distinction also by offering nice equipment on Chevys, instead of keeping the nicer equipment on higher end cars. By the mid 90s they weren't even trying anymore, because you saw no ads for GM cars other than Chevrolets (though Olds did have some ads when they redid the full line up around 97).
I think GM's biggest mistake was not keeping each division of the company distinct from each other. It wasn't just Pontiac. Think of how insanely popular Oldsmobiles were even 20 years ago. How do you mess that up? Buicks were also highly regarded cars. Yet look how they have slimmed down their lineup. In 1982 for example, they had 7 or 8 different models, and they sold well! But at that point, they were still keeping each division distinct enough, and there wasn't so much competition. When
So, which was it with GM? Incompetence?Neglect? Pontiac could have been...SHOULD have been one of the greatest car companies in the world. Hard to believe. How do you go from GTO, Trans AM, Wide Track Grand Prix sleak styled performance and drop down to bullshit like some bogus crap called a "G6" and a "G8" ? What's next? The "G-Whiz?" But then, there is no "next".
I think it's an amazing car, especially in the GT and GXP trims. But I also think that since it was lacking a sat/nav, that really diminished the competitiveness of it...and to be honest, since it was a "Pontiac" as well. Why did they go with G8? Well, Pontiac adapting a new series line - what other great endurance races are there to name an awesome Pontiac car after? Can-Am? That would have been worse than "G8." The G8 is a great car, and more aesthetically pleasing than a BMW 5-Series, imo.
Well, one of the theories on why the G8 hasn't sold well, is that it's a Pontiac. I think by calling it a G8 gave Pontiac a fresher look and made buyers feel like this was a new, better age for Pontiac. I would also think by calling the car a Bonneville, it would have shown buyers that Pontiac is the same company it had been - with nothing new going on. I'm sure Pontiac did their homework before naming the car. As they probably also considered the old brand names. Some how, G8 made the cut.
That may be true. What bothered me is the name felt so generic and that Pontiac was walking away from its heritage and the outstanding cars it made in the 60s — when a Bonneville was a luxury car with an extra dash of style and performance. Even the '87 Bonneville SE was a well-regarded car in its day.
I think GM was trying to salvage Pontiac with an excellent car like the G8, but it was too late. The car would make a fine Impala SS. It might have succeeded as an Impala.
Yeah, G8 is kind of generic, almost sounds like it should be an Inifiniti.
I can't say I'm much of a fan of Chevrolet. To me, they're a division bully. Taking what other divisions do best, and doing a bad job at copying it. So maybe it was Pontiac's time to go. I really don't like the idea of the G8 becoming an Impala...but I wouldn't mind seeing a reinvention of the Buick GN. I'll be looking to buy a G8 GXP in the future, because I do believe it's an amazing car.
@gdwriter It should have been called "Grand Prix".If it was it would have been the 8th design change for the GP.So for some strange reason it was called the G8 instead.Same goes for the G6,it would have been the 6th design change for the Grand Am,so some dumbass thought g6 would be better.
To my eyes, the first Firebirds with the earlier frontal styling are much prettier than the later versions. I'm from the UK and, generally, I'm not a huge fan of US cars, but these Firebirds look great. I can see some styling similarities (inside and out) between them and the second series Opel Manta (although the Firebirds looks far nicer!).
No wonder Oldsmobile went bankrupt. Once upon a time, GM would heavily advertise SINGLE MODELS within their huge stable of cars. Now they even advertise different makes togetherThe flames burning in the background, it looks apocalyptic. They just don't advertise like this anymore. EVERY YEAR they had a new theme song to trumpet the new cars for EVERY MAKE. @MCWEDS Well, Olds didnt go "bankrupt". But Pontiac definitely had a clearer identity as the sporty division of GM. Olds had an identity but GM erased it by making Olds and Buick too much alike. And, for that matter, Chevrolet, since it used to be you could only get nicer equipment on a Buick or an Olds. But yes, having an individual model that stands out certainly helps a brand. Olds had a few, notably, the Toronado and the Cutlass Supreme. And by the 90s NO ADVERTIZING for almost ANY GMbrand.

My dad bought a 1970 Firebird right off the showroom turntable in Richmond,VA. It was the bright orange with black interior and a manual 3-speed in the floor. It became my first car in 1979 and wrecked it less than a year later.
My mom & dad had a 71' Esprit that I learned to drive on. Too bad my mom sold it only around 2004. She was the only owner, Arizona car (no rust) and it had just ~169000 original miles.
