Deadlifts are a great way to strengthen your lower back, same with squats.
Even the traditional prone "Superman" exercise is ok IF you're making sure not to hyperextend your back. The problems is that most athletes try to see how high off the floor they can get their outstretched limbs, instead of only raising them an inch and concentrating on activating their glutes with their low back.
