John passed away by the Trick of The Light - Pure and Easy ! Hope the hotel roo was clean or there might have been Boris the Spider under the bed . Loved John - The man had such humble charisma !
saw them play this and John sang it instead of Roger...I was in the crowd freaking out like YEAAAAHHH ! - knowing this song is awesome like 'My Wife', too.
just listened to this album for the first time in 15 years and i have to say this must rate in the top 5 of my fave songs, chopping guitar of townshend, fingering of entwhistles bass but, moonie on the drums surpasses them all.
God I could just cry as a bass player listening to this because I miss John Entwhistle. Jerry Scheff,Mel Schmacher(Grand Funk Railroad),John Paul Jones, and John Entwhistle were my favorite bass players.
@jkllad "This track has two bass lines. The main "regular" bass line and the 8-string rhythm-riff bass line. Entwistle was fantastic! Great track!"
That's why when they performed it live, they needed Pete to play bass too! Although, somehow, I believe it's possible John could have played them both at once live anyway, 'cause that's how awesome he is.
Is it me or Pete did his best as a guitar player in all the Entwistle songs? Not just this song, but The Quiet One, and also the live renditions of Heaven and Hell
Sort of reminds me of the time I went to the Mustang Ranch and got a free upgrade by a girl there. It is strange to think that a prostitute would like you or view you as more than a customer.
I believe this is a song about a man who is very insecure with women, and hopes that a prostitute would feel something about their encounter as something different to just another customer!!! If anything, I think he is in love with her, or at least in love with the idea that he was different than some of the other men she may have been with!!!!
Great song. Thanks to the poster but I must disagree with your interpretation of the song. The guy in the song doesn't think the prostitute is in love with him. He thinks that... well, how can I put this delicately.... during their encounter he ...you know... GOT TO HER! Hence "Was I alright? Did I take you to the height of ecstasy"
i must disagree w/ you.rocknroll....pure sarcasm written by a man whos seen it all, done it all...i believe he couldn't care less what the hooker thought, bet ya he was bored(jaded) by the whole encounter...it was all a joke, the attitude was palpable, you can taste the sarcasm...just wasting time trying to stay entertained imho...peaceout , time to hit the ATM for some afterhours entertainment...
I read your reply and am not really seeing so much disagreement in our interpretations. The guy does seem jaded and the encounter with the hooker, routine, EXCEPT THAT he thinks somehow he might have actually given her an orgasm, prompting his question "Was I all right?" This moment struck him as odd in an otherwise pedestrian encounter. I do not believe, as others have suggested, that the guy is in love with the hooker or thinks she loves him.
RNR, your ability to clearly articulate your points commands my respect....its a pretty depressing song, his line" it must seem like a fairytale to a woman of her profession" i think was blowing smoke up his own ass than confirming his ability to get her off....remember he is lying in bed ruminating...he just doesn't care, that's my take....you r right, guy is not in love w/ her...the who just pegged it , musically, lyrically...nailed it...
My take is that its all about him. He wants proof that he's still got it, that he can get her off. He's questioning himself, his own abilities. If she wants to get to know him, wants to go away with him, then he has succeded. His only concern for her is to look for excuses why he may not have succeded, why he was tricked by the light.
see... from the version I know - Daltrey has more Rasp to his voice... and I remember saying: "Come on tell me" (what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this)... and that Come on tell me isn't there anymore (or, is, just faint)... and the end of it seems extended
Yes, I know the version you are talking about. Thay use to play that version on the radio here in the states, they pulled it for some reason and played an alternative version. They did extent the outro..Good Observation..
JOHN is the greatest bass to ever go through rock n' roll music, i've been playing bass for 10 years and he is the reason i started RIP John and let your music live on, p.s live the 8-string in this song if you want to call it a song more like a compisiton
I've played guitar since 1978 (Feb 9th actually) and this song is incredibly fun to play. Most of The Who stuff is a blast to play, but this is one of my favorites. GREAT job John, not only were you a phenomenal bassist in a phenomenal band, but you were also an incredible songwriter - a fact way too often overlooked.
@kurskss Well, we're all going to die anyway so if he was happy this way who's to bash him for it? I'm not trying to promote drugs-taking but no matter how healthily one lives we're all going to end up 6-feet-under sooner or later. Sadly, talented people who choose the drugs route tend to leave us sooner (but not always) than later.
I'm still pissed off too - I felt really bad when Keith died, but it was worse with the Ox. I love this song - especially the line about the ceiling peeling!!!
My favorite Who song! Besides the "Mack truck" bass throughout, that guitar solo is sweet! I don't understand why John didn't sing the studio version, though, it seems his gruff voice would have suited the tone of this song.
john died the way any man would want to die, in his 50's, in las vegas, in a hotel room, of a cocaine induced heart attack, with two hookers in his arms... wish he was still here... bass legend... love how he had a collection of cars with no drivers license though haha. what a man. what gad.
would you like to die on overdose, all alone, robbed by 2 bitches in Las Vegas hotel room, full of money and properties?, good die for whom? without a wife or children. As I know he was alone & depressed
john was the best bass player ever he redefinied all the styles and made the style lots of people try to copy but never will accomplish what he could do he made bass guitar playing not just a bass player he was a genius on a bass guitar
