Very nice vids! Very informative. What would you suggest could be the main reason for weak sparks on a breakerless ignition system on an old outboard motor? (7.5 hp Mercury '74)
is the cover absolutley nessicary, I have a H50 I'm repairing for a mower and I don't have the cover. the points are clean yet I cannot get a spark, I've held the HT lead tip and the cylinder head and I feel nothing when I crank the engine, would that mean the coil needs replacing?
Excellent Video. My snowblower had a 3.5 engine with no spark.
I did not have to replace coil because the points were the issue. I removed them and cleaned the contacts. Ensured all connections were clean and had a good ground.
Put it all back together and runs (almost) like new.
Hi I whant to say many many thanks for this excellent video, I have a Sears 4.5 outboard motor and whit your video I put my motor working again and I'm very happy with you, so many thanks for help me.
so what if yer kid "helps" and removes the points assembly from the engine and there are no timing marks on the engine or the assembly. ya, ya, measure tdc with a machinest rule through the plug hole,, whats the easy backyard way to do it??
condenser is to protect the points, and keep them from burning out prematurely.
The condenser is just a little can with a strip of tin foil and a strip of waxed paper, rolled together inside a little can. A wire is attached to the roll of tin foil and the waxed paper is there to separate one roll of the foil from the next one. The condenser is merely a storage room for electrons.
Another GREAT video by Dony. I learn so much from your videos. Thanks Dony.

Is there any way to check the air gap even after you mark everything? I've heard a business card works, is this true? Thanks for the vids.

hi is there an easy way to convert this to electronic ignition? i know with briggs you can just change the coil to a newer magnatron one

@thorpjoern probably the coils, on johnson's there is also a coil pack that can cause weak spark

@hpsuckz323 usually 6 and 7hp have the same coil and points

@thealed29 it should spark without cover, must be the coil, make sure gap is 020

I was very impressed by your video. I am a Machine Repairman by trade and you had a way of explaining things. Thanks, Troy

You have the best instuctional videos. One thing I forgot to do was mark where
the mounting bolts were when I removed the points assembly.
Whats the best way to get them back where they should be.

Hi Mate, great video. Do you have any ohm resistance specs for this type of coil, I cant seem to find any info online. cheers.
