The LP from which this song is taken (The Hollies Sing Dylan) is probably one of the most underestimated albums of its time. The orchestral enhancement, and The Hollies' own amazing talent, add a new dimension to the lyrics of one of the 20th century's greatest songwriters. Thank you to both Mr Robert Zimmerman and The Hollies; this old vinyl LP will always remain as one of my most treasured possessions.
Personally, I like this version better than Dylan's and the others'. I don't care much of what the critics said about it; whether they thought it was over the top or it was overly dramatic, I simply love it that way. Plus, doing that is what makes it more realistic and soulful.
I wish to make it clear that I have nothing against the group in general or Mr. Sylvester's singing, especially when Graham was such a tough act to follow. It's just that the X-rated stuff doesn't go with the song. There is a cleaner video of the Sylvester version.
The Hollies have been viewed more than 5000000 times in you tube, I think I meant something and what I said is real, they were the greatest singing with Nash or Silvester and of course The Lord of the Voice, Mr Allan Clarke
The parts with Terry Sylvester or whoever making out seem a bit unnecessary to me (though I guess they definitely convey the "make love, not war" message), and it's not the best version of this song I've heard, but it's a very unusual arrangement of the song. I've never heard it with this tempo and with so much background - most versions seem to be simple and folksy and mostly guitar. I like this different take on it!
That isn't Terry Sylvester making out. Believe me, I notice! Thanks for your comment. I think this is one of the best versions, but not the only best version out there, and I agree: The arrangement is unique and gives a different spin on this song, which is what the Hollies were going for. Doing another folksy version would seem redundant.
Thanks for explaining the 'make love not war' aspect-I was confused about the love scene at the beginning until I was reminded about that sixties slogan!
When this song was published during the vietnam war andthe times aftertht this song was played so often that the record is damaged.I still have and,yes i still listen too it,because its a song that really has a message,i hope it would be played more today, perhaps a new peacemovement is what we need.
Trouble is, would all the islamic terrorists take any notice of the song? I think not. These song lyrics are fairly worthless as the enemy take no notice. Nice somg though, but I would prefer artists to come up with solutions if they are going to comment, rather than just trite soundbites
People say that artists only sing about the problems, but don't offer any solutions. Show how we can put the solutions into the lyrics of a song. I'm not saying this to be mean, and this isn't directed at you specificially. I have heard this same comment before from others, and wondered what they would propose to do.
Perhaps we need more songs like this today, because the world is not any better then the days of the vietnam war,I think that artist should have more responsobility for the music they write, like Dylan and others did.
I think the problem is he is singing out of range and putting too much pressure on his vocal chords. It may haven been in an attempt to make this version sound different than the other covers of this song, but it would have been better if he stuck to using the same range on this song that he used on others on the Hollies Sing Dylan album.
did they redo the video because there is another one that has nash in it and you can definatley hear his voice in the chorus, but this one sounds a little different so i didnt know if they re-recorded it or just kept it
It took me a while to fully appreciate this album but now I do. OK, the big band brass and strings isn't everyone's cup of tea BUT just listen to the harmonies, listen to the drumming, LISTEN TO ALLAN CLARKE!!!!!!!!! Case closed.......Hollies Magic!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry if I offend. It's just that the work of such bands as The Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zepelin and other outstanding British bands who evolved from their humble beginnings and wrote some of the greatest songs in the history of rock is ingrained in my psyche.
Having said that, I believe that The Hollies are very much underrated, very talented, but their best period remains, in my mind at least, early to mid 60s period. :)
Incidentally, I showed this video to a friend, and for a minute, she thought the male model at the beginning was Allan Clarke! (We wish!) I told her that it wasn't him and, if it was, I wish I could have been the female model!
I own this all dylan songs recorded by Hollies album

This is a cool version of the song.
Funny thing is, Graham loved Hollies sing Dylan.
All these bands are great, the Hollies are a pop band, not a rock band.
