So beautifully done!!! I do wish that she brought some more energy to it. Not in the sense that she was lacking anything here, but I see Giselle as almost bubbling over in this piece and she played it with such reserve. Am I way off base? lol I very well could be! Either way, such a great interpretation of the roll!
This is the same exact choreography we use!!! (the hops on pointe we do the front attitude with it just like this!) and I havent seen many do it like this so it's kinda cool!
Can someone please explain to me how does she pick up her leg like that @ 0:10? I know it involves good turnout but I have a feeling that's not all there is to it.
i see people commenting on her acting based only on this clip. what acting do you require in this brief solo? she doesn't have to cry, feel depressed, doubt and feel any emotion other than feel happy and confident. she's supposed to entertain the villagers and the guests (albrecht's family and fiancee).
I was just about to say that she needs too work on her acting. All she does is smile when she dances, she needs more emotion. Though her dancing.. well that's just absolutely perfect. Gorgeous.
I am in love with her technique especially port te bras. Most American dancers should be paying attention and worlk on their pot te bra because doing so makes their performance look polished. My favorite thing about watching dancees from overseas, like The Kirov, The Royal Ballet, or Bolshoi is their por te bras. It creates such a beautiful line in every movrment. That is what defines ballet, besides pointe and turn-out, from other disciplines.
A bunch of my dance friends did Giselle (I don't go to their studio, so I couldn't be in it :( ) and the girl who was Giselle was PERFECT. Even though her technique is not as good as Marianela (though it's pretty darn amazing), she is just as beautiful a dancer as her.
how could somebody dislike this? they should be thanking eliathestar for putting this up, because we can't even find a copy of this gem elsewhere. or they just don't like marianela... tsk tsk.
It is funny because I love her dancing but I'm not great fun of her acting. Here for example she is unbearably sweet ,childish. I know Giselle it suppesed to be like that but Marianela looks so mature, women-like so it does't fit to her. The effect she pretend girl maybe even little girl inefficiently for me. But in MacMillan Concerto she is amazing - no acting uff
@malaya18a regarding giselle, i disagree. giselle is not just a childish sweet girl. she's not a one dimensional character. because in the second act you'll see how mature and woman-like giselle will be because she would fight for her love albrecht no matter what. so with that in mind, i thought marianela gave one of the best interpretations, along with her great technique, plus her partnership with rupert is heavenly!
I was commenting only this part of her first act interpetation not second act or whole ballet. So please read with understanding. In this part of ballet Giselle is usually portray as naive and sweet village girl - less or more. Such is a story, libretto. Marianela is too sweet for me. But it's obvious for every one who knows ballet that Giselle change in the mad scene and in second act is a completely different being so dancer must reflect it.
@malaya18a actually i cannot understand what you say my dear. i think you have difficulty saying it in english. you said in your previous comment that marianela is matured looking. but on the second comment, you say she's too sweet. anyway, i'll stop. :)
@kkiimmiissiipp This is very interesting. You are claiming that you don’t understand me well, but constantly you answer my comments. English is not my native language but at least I try to learn it. So “my dear” never make any lapse in the foreign language, OK :):). Konkro uno prisu an trui umselin grizis utm lärim de danium spirum se lakki ravut a évenké vidáman. Ez oso ondo lexoj çasti gjithë. Marianela is lovely in all she does. Her technique is flawless.. she has amazing control, beautiful lines and turnout.. the way she lands from any turn is incredible.. using that demi pointe and with her heel foward. she seems a bit to happy for giselle.. but she was beautiful anyways
i just love how she emphasizes her strengths which are the arabesques and her turns. her arabesques and attitude turns were marvelous as she holds them longer. and she did an incredible double turn clock and counterclockwise. absolutely wonderful!
I really love MArienala because you can tell that tries so hard to connect to each of the characters that she plays and she can play both the dramatic and the naive characters in ballets. She is a true artist
acting? LOL....her 'interpretation' strikes me as close to devoid of meaning and feeling. Empty technique, and not very graceful either, unless one finds generic simpering graceful.
@resborzage How ould you have danced Giselle, fellow? I suggest you to read what critics say about Marianela and learn, as you seem to think you can rate an asrtist's work.
i think what separates her interpretations from others is her phenomenal acting abilities.... instead of just dancing the routine, she plays the character. she does this whenever she dances... la badayera is a perfect example.
Her technique is so phenomenally assured and each movement is perfectly finished with grace and confidence. Such perfect technique can, at times, overwhelm the characterization. Certainly a textbook performance of this variation; she makes it actually look not so challenging--though it is for any other dancer. LOL.
She's so beautiful in this variation, wow, I didn't expected her to be so wonderful, it's really great. Do you have complete "Giselle" with Marianela?
She's my favourite ballerina. But I feel like she's either not using enough space or she's really cramped in. This is at the Royal Opera House? Isn't it?
@WickedHaydie98 i think it just looks small because this is a film of live relay - it was shown in cinemas - so maybe the angles/perspectives look a little strange as a result

@solidlove015 well after learning how to do more advanced stuff on both legs, and your ankles are strong enough, you start single-leg work.

@kkiimmiissiipp I agree, everybody who says that she needs to work on her acting should see her in La Bayadere, Swan Lake, Giselle (as Myrtha) etc.
