Technique, schmechnique. One thing and one thing only matters. DOES IT SOUND GOOD!!! Yes it does. And I'm going to guess that "Chops" refers to his mutton chop sideburns.
Why does he have to look at his fingers.. If he played for a while shouldn't he be able to do it without looking? i know i can and i have been playing for four years
i cannot believe all the RIDICULOUS comments here, from one 30 second unamplified slap session. Chops is a sought after and talented musician in many bands, and has toured with grammy winning artists. Before you post all your negative remarks take some time to find out more about his talent and music and showmanship. this guy has it all.
there is always gonna be someone better....what the fuck is your point fucknut?? can you play upright bass?? prob the fuck not!! go stick a skewer in your ass and set yourself on fire!
Excellent!!, here he is demonstrating some great rhythmic bass dynamics in time!! HE knows what he is doing.. just playing something a little different than the usual rockabilly riff.. Many good musicians show similiar concentration, check out the great Roy Clark!. The fact is, Mike LeConte is one of the best and hard-working rockabilly musicians out there today. He has recorded some great music and is well-respected by other musicians...a heck of a nice guy! Keep on rocking brother Mike!
in my opinion upright bass wasn't made for this king of playin' It should keep it's classical soul for classical music and light jazz. Use a bas guitar for the rest.
ps i been lead vocalist and slap bass man for 33 years.. i appreciate his speed etc but its not rocket science to do is it? hitting the right note is the real skill while slappin surely?
not bad but he cant get a job cos he fucks about too much! slap bass is great but too much ruins it neat tricks are ok for a party piece! bill black/marshall lyttle even lee rocker have got it right..dog house slap bass played right for the music it was intended for! maybe a triple slap here an there but gallopin is for phsyco punk rubbish!
People criticise the technique because the double bass is a more physically demanding instrument and you can end your playing career if youre not careful. RSI, carpal tunnel and the like.
At least his wrist is relatively straight which is good but hes collapsing his hand, which means no speed.
People are saying hes playing fast, his right hand is, but his left hand wont play fast like that.
What I don't get 'bout double bass guys compared to electric bass guys: who cares about his left hand technique? He's expressing himself in his own way, and he's making money doing it. If you wanna be proper, play in an orchestra.
All he is doing is slapping fast, he has no rhythm or structure to his playing. Anyone can pick up an upright and slap the shit out of it, and have people go oh he plays really fast he must be good, and if he does play in all these he must of built of challises by now, unless hes been playing with his fingers taped forever.
well i been playin years and ALWAYS plaster up..stupid not too..if you dont get blisters ya aint doin it right! your fingers never toughen up on your "slappin" hand cos its constant new skin.. not like a guitarists fret hand
@rockin56 that's true, my fingers used to bleed on a guitar then they hardened up, i played my friends cello with my fingers and it hurt like shit haha
It's clear that none of you play double bass... that is really horrible left hand technique. You're all impressed because he's playing so fast, but this guy is an amateur at best. Speed not equal talent. Now, I'm really impressed by that bass. What a beautiful instrument.
I play double bass and think this is impressivish. Maybe that says something about my own skills but whatever. And I agree, that is a damn fine instrument!
@streetfighterxx -- The only thing that is clear is that you think there is one way to play an instrument. Which, I might add, is wrong. If it works for him, who cares what his left hand technique is or is not. He's obviously not looking to be Willie Dixon, or play in an orchestra... I thought the syncopation was pretty damn good.
You have no idea how great this guy is - this is not an accurate representation. I've seen him play for many yrs in different bands; he's absolutely fantastic, and always puts on a great show. I just saw him last night at the Bayou, w/ the Lustre Kings, and we had a blast.
Hello, bass players. i have been searching the internet for a cheap and decent upright bass. i came across one called the Florea Midnight Bass Outfit(3/4 size black). if anyone could give me some feedback on it, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks.
Whatever some of you may think this guy has played with some great bands and even played with Brian Setzer, As far as the Bass goes it does not really sound that good when it's not amplified
wow it's clear none of you play upright slap...otherwise you'd know this guy did an awsome job...the bass wasn't plugged in so that's why you couldn't really hear the sound that good....this guy did a good job representing king basses and i can't wait to get mine!
Im not a huge fan of the style, but im glad that people are attempting to take it in different directions. Theres a lot of untapped potential with uprights, and if its that kind of rockabilly slap in his genre of music, thats one of many outlets still left to explore on this great instrument. I for one am not a huge fan of his style, but i think it's better to respect it then to shut it down so quickly.
this guy does suck he gets off beat alot you can hear it and you can tell he doesnt really know wher the frets are he always looks. i dont like his hair he reminds me of a buisness man
@nananaalgoodaye Standing at the wrong position of the bass, his thumb is wrapped around the neck, his fingerings are atrocious and inefficient, the music itself is primitive and I've heard more complicated Psychobilly before.
He doesn't seem to know how to play the bass. He knows how to hold down the strings and slap the fingerboard, but he hasn't got a clue how to actually play the instrument. He's making sounds with it, and I'll give him this--it sounds good.
@ThePsychoMike so the millions of people that have never touched a double bass deserve to be insulted and told that they suck, because they can't play it?
But if you try to play it and call yourself "Chops" and list a big resume of bands nobody's ever heard of, your playing technique is utter trash and you really can't compare to anybody but a thrash-metal drummer when it comes to actual "chops" on the bass, you're liable to be under scrutiny.
Note, I said he sounded good. Just that his technique rivals that of a six year old and his music is approaching nursery rhymes in complexity.
For more traditional styles, sure. I play some classical and jazz, myself, and I use 'proper' fingerings for those (although not really... I use my ring finger a lot. just because my hand is big enough to do that), but man, you actually get a much fuller sound out of a slap when you're grasping the neck like that. Try it sometime if you find yourself in the presence of gut or nylon strings.
I congratulate the majority of you....this fella' isn't fooling anyone with his bag o' tricks! Maybe he can get a gig with Kenny G; I notice that the word Jazz is not mentioned in this guys video....me thinks he knows that he "can't hang" in a real jazz set!
Ringo Starr never went around bragging about himself....he probably was aware of Max, Elvin, Shaughnessy, etal!
He´s playing rockabilly, who the hell wants to play jazz when you can play rockabilly? He is among the better bassplayers around. Not as good as Kevin Smith or Mark Winchester, but he defenitely knows what he´s doing. And yes, I´ve seen him live with a band..not a bad quality You Tube video!
People should calm down about this guy, sure he's not playing the right way, but he's playing the way that's comfortable to him. He never said he was a pro bassist, he's just playing music.
To everyone who has posted regarding how much this guy sucks, how he has bad technique, etc: we got to see him play ONE groove for about 30 seconds! Not only that, but I don't recall hearing him say anything about being the world's greatest bassist, so why do you feel obligated to tell him that he's not? I tire of seeing YouTube treated like a competition, rather than a forum.
wow he pretty much has no idea whatg he is doing. Once u learn how to slap any stringed instrument u can make basically do it to any stringed instrument. This is when technique and style sepreates u from the others. Im not bashing him but he can get better sounding notes if he knew how to play an upright.
yea...just the way he's standing, (and LOOKING while he's playing?!?!?!) shows a lack of proper technique. I'm not a huge fan of double bass slapping anyway. Bass Guitar it's great, (as an accent,) but on contra it just sounds like a mess of clicks.
i actually know this guy my stepmoms friend is the leader of The Blind Pharos, make sure you dont post a video of yourself EMOSHIN you might get picked on as well.
This guy is a pretentious asshole. And being good at only one style does not make one a good bassist. Sure he can slap, but his complete lack of proper technique pretty much ensures he can't successfully play any other style. No versatility or proper training. And calling slapping the "next step"? Slapping has been around for decades. I think I hate everything about this guy.
They dont Even know how to Play The Upright Bass The RIGHT WAY notice his hand Position is Awful and He is Almost in-front of The Bass
i mean WTF?? i would understand some1 Playing The Bass W/ Their Right Hand Fingering, But that is just out of a Bad Teacher, But C'mon Standing infront of a Bass and Almost Bending Down To the Base of The neck, Thats Just SREAMING Dumbass. Right At the Crowd...
hey, listen all you people like emoshin: back the fuck down. there are different styles for DIFFERENT PEOPLE. kim nekroman plays his bass whilst sitting on top of it. does that make him a dumbass? psycho/rockabilly playing style is unique, not dumb. upright slap is hard to begin with, and yes i am an upright bass player and slapper. so what the fuck about "horrible technique".
PS: why would king doublebass sponsor him if he was as bad as you say he is, mr. professional slapper?
that's exactly what people said when Jimmy Blanton abandoned quarter-note metronome style bass playing, and when Jaco took out frets from an electric bass, or Larry Graham slapping an electric bass, yes electric. Pick up your bow and just play classical, don't interrupt the avant-gardes.
if you didn't realize, he wasn't looking at his hands. He was staring off, at what looked like the headstock. notice when he moved his hands down the neck
Am surprised at all the negative comments. You know this guy and others r taking the double bass into whole new creative areas & techniques it was never originally designed for. This is cutting edge stuff. how many instruments can you think of that are being played in new creative ways (other than 2 handed tapping-guitar).
Technical bass elitists piss me off. I've been playing classical bass for thirteen years but I can still appreciate something different. The guy's left hand may not look like Gary Karr's but he's doing what he loves which involves playing the bass in a creative way so he's alright by me. I dig it.
ok guys #1 the bass has flame maple so it needs a flame paint job. lol. #2 if you wanna see someone good look up lee rocker hes great at this slapping stuff. #3 when it comes to slap most tecnique is in the right hand thats slappin. #4 give it a little chance. #5 it took me sometime to get slap mainly cuz the people i saw play it sucked. #6 the whole slapping thing keeps rhythm and tempo correct me if im wrong in a nice way. #7 most left hand tec is bad becuase notes arrent heard clearly slapn
the man is a laugh, dont hear anything but percussion, could be a drumstick on a table when you shut ur eyes... where you need that giant bass for? and baaaaad lefthand tech...
that just sounded really percussive and that was it, did he even need to use his left hand? I couldn't hear any notes, and I also don't play double bass though.
i agree with you and i do play bass and i think its HORRIBLE that they would degrade the instrument and turn it into a piece of crap like that, FLAMES ON A WOODEN INSTRUMENT its so tacky words cannot describe
I play bass as well, and I think it's a creative and valid way to play the instrument. Tacky is subjective, but by no means is slap bass any less of an art-form. There were indeed musical notes there - not to say that percussion isn't a part of music too.
what the hell are you talking about? the graining of the wood offends you? i mean fair enough if you dont like slap on a double bass, i personally think it is a good way of bringing a percussive element into an otherwise boring phrase. the triplets on their own would be boring so sticking the 16th taps in makes it sound more urgent...but you cant seriously blame anyone for the way wood looks!
lol i play bass, Rockabilly SLAP bass and it is awesome. and more interesting than classical in my opinion. BUT you couldnt hear the notes. but thats because it probably wasnt amplified
The quality of the sound u are hearing (the lack of bass frequencies) is partly down to the microphone on the camera, and the fact that this slapping technique when played acoustically can drown out the plucked bass notes.I bet what this guy plays sounds fantastic when he plays thru an amp. then you can balance the percussive sound wit the bass notes. I play slap bass, and i think the guy is really cool. No wonder he is sought after by several bands.
ah, not that great..looks like hes struggling just to play triplets and a simple fretting hand part. bass sounds alright but King is just a brand name. Dosnt mean its good.

He´s playing rockabilly, who the hell wants to play jazz when you can play rockabilly? He is among the better bassplayers around. Not as good as Kevin Smith or Mark Winchester, but he defenitely knows what he´s doing. And yes, I´ve seen him live with a band..not a bad quality You Tube video!
rockaround71 3 years ago
People should calm down about this guy, sure he's not playing the right way, but he's playing the way that's comfortable to him. He never said he was a pro bassist, he's just playing music.
CaseyTheGinger 3 years ago
To everyone who has posted regarding how much this guy sucks, how he has bad technique, etc: we got to see him play ONE groove for about 30 seconds! Not only that, but I don't recall hearing him say anything about being the world's greatest bassist, so why do you feel obligated to tell him that he's not? I tire of seeing YouTube treated like a competition, rather than a forum.

king double bass... oh ya, real high quality lol
chris1125playsthebas 3 years ago
Yes, they are probably the best rockabilly basses around.
rockaround71 3 years ago
wow he pretty much has no idea whatg he is doing. Once u learn how to slap any stringed instrument u can make basically do it to any stringed instrument. This is when technique and style sepreates u from the others. Im not bashing him but he can get better sounding notes if he knew how to play an upright.
KB200887 3 years ago
yea...just the way he's standing, (and LOOKING while he's playing?!?!?!) shows a lack of proper technique. I'm not a huge fan of double bass slapping anyway. Bass Guitar it's great, (as an accent,) but on contra it just sounds like a mess of clicks.

he plays for 50 billion different bands ofcourse he knows how to play u idiot

i actually know this guy my stepmoms friend is the leader of The Blind Pharos, make sure you dont post a video of yourself EMOSHIN you might get picked on as well.
misterrlargecoffee 3 years ago
This guy is a pretentious asshole. And being good at only one style does not make one a good bassist. Sure he can slap, but his complete lack of proper technique pretty much ensures he can't successfully play any other style. No versatility or proper training. And calling slapping the "next step"? Slapping has been around for decades. I think I hate everything about this guy.

Omg... I hate People who Think Their Hot-Shit
Right At the Crowd...
xxxEMOSHINxxx 3 years ago
hey, listen all you people like emoshin: back the fuck down. there are different styles for DIFFERENT PEOPLE. kim nekroman plays his bass whilst sitting on top of it. does that make him a dumbass? psycho/rockabilly playing style is unique, not dumb. upright slap is hard to begin with, and yes i am an upright bass player and slapper. so what the fuck about "horrible technique".
PS: why would king doublebass sponsor him if he was as bad as you say he is, mr. professional slapper?
NOFXlawlz 3 years ago 3
Who cares
Its the sound he makes that counts.
And what a sound!
iburnedthedinner 3 years ago
that's exactly what people said when Jimmy Blanton abandoned quarter-note metronome style bass playing, and when Jaco took out frets from an electric bass, or Larry Graham slapping an electric bass, yes electric. Pick up your bow and just play classical, don't interrupt the avant-gardes.

There is no right way to play any instrument and soon as you get that into your head you might appreciate music a bit more.

just i play by using my ear not looking where your hands are hmmm
sounds boring aswell

if you didn't realize, he wasn't looking at his hands. He was staring off, at what looked like the headstock. notice when he moved his hands down the neck

Am surprised at all the negative comments. You know this guy and others r taking the double bass into whole new creative areas & techniques it was never originally designed for. This is cutting edge stuff. how many instruments can you think of that are being played in new creative ways (other than 2 handed tapping-guitar).
billythundercloud 3 years ago
slapping ait that new its been dont since the upright bass was first used in jazz
rockabillyhepcat13 3 years ago

Bassboy178 3 years ago
the man is a laugh, dont hear anything but percussion, could be a drumstick on a table when you shut ur eyes... where you need that giant bass for? and baaaaad lefthand tech...
DeRauser 4 years ago
Agree.
Enkulinist 4 years ago
double agreed
shaamjuice 3 years ago
that just sounded really percussive and that was it, did he even need to use his left hand? I couldn't hear any notes, and I also don't play double bass though.
bornfedslaughter 4 years ago
i agree with you and i do play bass and i think its HORRIBLE that they would degrade the instrument and turn it into a piece of crap like that, FLAMES ON A WOODEN INSTRUMENT its so tacky words cannot describe
xemnas112358 4 years ago 3
I play bass as well, and I think it's a creative and valid way to play the instrument. Tacky is subjective, but by no means is slap bass any less of an art-form. There were indeed musical notes there - not to say that percussion isn't a part of music too.
funkytoastbread 4 years ago
Funkytoastbread. You are a musician and a gentleman.
billythundercloud 3 years ago
what the hell are you talking about? the graining of the wood offends you? i mean fair enough if you dont like slap on a double bass, i personally think it is a good way of bringing a percussive element into an otherwise boring phrase. the triplets on their own would be boring so sticking the 16th taps in makes it sound more urgent...but you cant seriously blame anyone for the way wood looks!
DiscoKiller 4 years ago
i think he was talking about the pained "flames" on the bass not the "flammed" wood surface itself
eather way you shouldent trash jimbo's signature bass
rockabillyhepcat13 4 years ago
The tacky-ness of it is unbearable.
achukachu22 3 years ago 2
Man,its about the music not how pretty the instrument looks. You guys with the negative waves, never created nothing in your whole damn life.
billythundercloud 3 years ago
lol i play bass, Rockabilly SLAP bass and it is awesome. and more interesting than classical in my opinion. BUT you couldnt hear the notes. but thats because it probably wasnt amplified
Buddha117 3 years ago
The quality of the sound u are hearing (the lack of bass frequencies) is partly down to the microphone on the camera, and the fact that this slapping technique when played acoustically can drown out the plucked bass notes.I bet what this guy plays sounds fantastic when he plays thru an amp. then you can balance the percussive sound wit the bass notes. I play slap bass, and i think the guy is really cool. No wonder he is sought after by several bands.
billythundercloud 3 years ago
thats an ugly bass :]

colonelclaypool44 4 years ago
ah, not that great..looks like hes struggling just to play triplets and a simple fretting hand part. bass sounds alright but King is just a brand name. Dosnt mean its good.
