Mais je traduis les pièces classiques en russe. Les poètes russes et français ils ont toujour traduit les texts d'un l'autre. Les operas sur la musique de Tchaikovsky sont un exemple.
Jaques Offenbach was german, born in Cologne. As music student in Cello he went to Paris to study composition. There he also composed most of his operas.Naturally in french but german fits also well since a lot themes are playing in Germany: La duchesse de Gerolstein for example.
Love the music, dancing, costumes, and mania of this but I wish it weren't in German. I'm of German descent, read German, and love Germany but have the stereotypical reaction of so many who think that the language is just too heavy, harsh, and, well, ugly, to work for a piece like this. I'm glad it exists for native speakers of German, but would really prefer to hear them singing in French.
A good question. When I recommend opera to friends and students I always tell them that Mozart, especially in his Italian operas, has a much lighter touch than one might expect. And it's true that his mother tongue was German but his nationality was Austrian, and that might account for part of this difference.

When they said that this was a comedy they truly meant it. The lyrics are so nonsensical. It's quite funny but very enjoyable!
