  • juraría que esta interpretación es de Rostropovich :S

  • Yo-Yo Ma plays Bach better than anyone else. Because he plays it more slowly.

Every other cellist races through the Bach suites, but Ma knows how to control the tempo, giving the listener more time to savour the notes. (If you also play, write this down).

  • i like how Mr. Pishonga sais they F-bomb in the middle of a speech on how perfect God is...

  • @Cthral i like how you can point out what others can read

  • @Pishonga you clearly don't respect other people's beliefs, judging by your "god is perfect, god created us" attitude, you need to be more open minded to other people's opinions, just because you believe differently in God doesn't mean you need to go ruin the nessage this video is trying to send. And sucking up to God won't get you closer to going to heaven, and if he's so perfect and amazing, I'm sure he can defend himself..

  • @kall58 who said im sucking up to God? im just pointing out the obvious, something your mind cannot comprehend. im not the one who said something false about my God, the person who made the video did, im not ruining the message, im correcting the message.

  • Comment removed

  • what a human being can, what r we??? we are nothing but flesh and blood. God is a perfect being! he can create anything above the works of a human. he created heaven and what did st. paul say about heaven?? when God let him see heaven for the first time, he said, you cannot describe heaven in words. What the fuckk??? so obviously God can create stradivarius and can create better violins than stradivarius. THINK!

  • @Pishonga There is no god. Only music.

  • @volk410 to you there is no God, to me there is. learn from kall58's message

  • @Pishonga Your god isn't real you fool.

  • @VonJohannstein to you my God isnt real, im not the fool, you are. learn from kall58's message

  • By the grace of God and by the talents he gave to every single human being on this earth, Antonio received such a gift, but BY GOD! God gave him this gift ever since he was born. and without God, (Jesus Christ) Antonio wouldn't have had such a talent and gift as that. and it is very! insulting to say something about God like that. How could he say God cannot make stradivarius violins without him. God created the universe! he can create anything and on top of that he can create anything above

  • Fantastik:X:X:X

  • besides having the obvious talent to make a great sounding violin. Antonio also had a better pick of the woods back then.

  • and Antonio Stradivarius could NOT make Stradivarius violins without GOD.. ;)

  • GREAT.....greetings from italy

  • i love this. thats all i have to say

  • Enjoyed the video - thanks for giving me something to think about...

  • The only reason why Strads are so expensive, is because no one can make them like that......but what if someone could make a violin like that...or better?.....Strads don't have unchangeable value....or said to be priceless....they are only valuable because of peripheral circumstances in the world, our ineptness, incompetence at not being able to reproduce a Strad with our so-called cutting edge technology....it just shows that we're less advanced now, go create something new and better!

  • @rodolfo333fr Actually, the Stradivarius violins have a unique property thanks to the lumber of the time. Because Stradivarius' was the time of the "mini ice-age," the quality and consistency of the trees had changed ubiquitously - and they were just so that Stradivarius was able to bend them into something amazing.

It has been proven conclusively that the material of the Stradivarius violins is not reproducible in the modern day.

  • Gosh, you're opinionated. How can it be that every time human beings destroy, we are told that 'It's our own fault', and every time a human being makes something beautiful, it's 'All because of God.' People like Yo-Yo Ma stopped preahcing and kept practicing.

In response to BrandynBoles, yes! Popular mythology states that Satan's supposed to be a great violinist!

  • Gosh, you're opinionated. How can it be that every time human beings destroy, we are told that 'It's our own fault', and every time a human being makes something beautiful, it's 'All because of God.' People like Yo-Yo Ma stopped preahcing and kept practicing.

  • with out God humans can do no good or bring any good to the world that is basic Christian belief! I believe this as do prob 1 billion people.

  • @jesaintlouis

no man can do good without the aid of christianity? This comment alone shows the arrogance that makes religion what it is. Ignore all the genocide, sexism, racism, prejudice and so on that makes up all the old testament and state that this element of "good" which in reality is an ever changing group of social pressures that we call morals comes from a "god". This is more absurd than Aristotle's ideas on movement!

  • The majority of useful skills are not gifts. In fact, 99% of all skills are learned through education or practice, unless it's something like perfect pitch, which you are born with. Although the message of this video is relatively benevolent, I have to agree that it is indeed misanthropic to say that a persons skills are the result of some spiritual gratuity. It shows that western religion puts very little faith into the individual.

  • Yo Yo Ma is great

  • '...a synonym for excellence', still said in this century by a man of many years ago.......phenominal video =D

  • take the chinese violin in some music store here in the phils. it doesn`t make a difference. a strad sounds like sit at times. a very expensive, crazy belief of most purest. try the home made stuff, you`ll be surprised. it sound sweet.

  • What i was saying was that most violin players (great ones) either just have a guanari or they have both and prefer the guanari. Heifitz was one of these players he had both and most of the time preferred to play the guanari. I am not saying that the strads are not beautiful in their own right.

  • You know what is really interesting is that strds are no doubt great but why do most great violinists hava a strad and a guanari? heifitz, perlman, sarah chang, friedman etc

  • they are the greatest quality to play with. :) A beautiful sound.

  • LucidOwl...I don't think the reference to God has anything to do with the intention behind the comment.

  • Absolutely maginficent! I positively adored your video, your words are graceful as a stroke of a brush and as inspiring as the art of the Louvre. Truly lovely words to beautiful music, as flowing and elegant as the water of the purest stream. The cello was so warm and resonant, something truly fit of Stradivari, and Yo-Yo Ma played it eloquently with sublime sophisitication. Bravo, delightfully crafted video.

  • instrument was tuned to resonate 432hz not like today 440hz. and other old instruments :D why all say is better then today :D 432hz

  • What is the point of comparing God with such great music? It would be an inspiring video if God was excluded.

  • regardless of the incongruity, I really appreciated the message as well as the graphic and musical accompaniment - thanks for posting, it is very spiritually uplifting and refreshing to see here

  • I agree, the message is beautiful and done to such nice music. thanks for posting this!

  • ... this isnt a violin... this is the Bach's CELLO suite No.1 prelude

  • So stradivari was like da vinci in a sense that he believed god was created in his image and not the other way around

  • nevermind i apologize for my ignorance of the matter

  • thanks for the laugh.

  • pretty sure this is on a cello and pretty sure stradivarius' were violins....sooooo wtf

  • you really think think stradivari ONLY made violins?

  • I corrected myself, don't be a twat.

  • Such a great statement...!

  • great job!

  • I think he used his montagnana for this not his strad, I'm fairly certain. Which makes this video fairly ironic.

  • that would make sense since this is tuned to a baroque A instead of a modern A, i dunno whether you'd wanna do something like that to a 300 year old cello that isn't used to it.

  • This is a later recording of the suites, his earlier recordings he used his montagnana.

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • You either get it or you don't

  • Yo Yo Ma is a genius on the cello. I don't know how he does it, but when he plays it seems as if the weight of the world is lifted off my shoulders. I guess it's just those magic fingers.

  • inspiring

  • amazing.....inspiring....love it

  • beautiful song.

    interesting music video

  • Molto bello. Complimenti 5 stars

  • this is just fking awesome

  • Always been a very big yo yo ma fan. I loved the song "Gallop of a thousand horses" he did with silk road.

  • stradivarius

  • God, that rocks.

  • Excelente...

  • what is this song called

  • prelude Bach´s Cello Suite No. 1

  • This is the Cello Suite Nº 1 in G Major BWV 1007 by J.S.Bach...

  • God could have created any instrument he wanted without humans. Of course he gives people abilities and skills that many times no one else has. But I think that it is inaccurate in the fact that God needed a human to make the violin.

  • But what would be the point of a violin without a human to play it?

  • None. But that's not the point...

  • I think this is really a vid where you don't need to be religious in any certain way to appreciate. It conveys the same message that everyone understands. Plus, it was wonderfully put together -- something I definitely enjoy watching/listening in the first 19 minutes into 2009. <3 Inspiring and hopeful, promising change everything the New Years' stands for.

  • MLK mimicked this idea in one of his final speech. He referenced God throughout his speeches, and you didn't need to be religious to get his ideas.

  • Please allow me to contradict some of you. I actually liked the message, the performance and the video, too. Why do some people feel better to comment a video just to let off steam and be jerks? Just keep your mouth shut for a change.

  • oh no God is mentioned...I'm so hurt I'm going to cry. wah wah wah.........I really hate people more each day.

  • I love this prelude and I love this performance of it

  • of course you had to tie the God bullshit in

  • Of course. *sighs*. Unfortunately most people are willing to accept that the great and terrible aspects of humanity are actually just aspects of humanity.

  • elaborate

  • For instance, take this video. The maker seems not to have contemplated that Antonio Stradivari was very talented at making violins, and had found a method that worked. There's no need to tie in an unnecessary god.

  • I agree completely. It's insulting to say that some excellent individuals are only excellent through the grace of God - it robs them of what glory is rightfully theirs for their skill by attributing all greatness to some completely different entity. It matters not whether God exists, it's insulting all the same. It says that humans can't do anything without a magical watchful eye in the sky, which is possibly the most misanthropic message ever conceived.

  • I agree

  • @Crezth You know Satan was a musician once.

  • @Crezth

Some people are talented. For example, my uncle, who never touched a piano before in his life, sat down and played almost perfectly on my aunt's baby grand. She had spent her youth taking lessons. So yes, talent exists, and it's a Darwinian crap shoot as far as brain structure and chemistry go. So, for the people who do it through years of laborous practice...yay! For the people who can just sit down and do anything...yay! Whatever.

  • @Crezth God was not robbed today my friend…Bravo and congratulations maestro…you have achieved Stradivarius.

  • Yo-Yo-Ma is my hero! Maybe, one day I'll be able to play even half as good as him. I love this song, and the video was very touching!

  • ... That was such an inspiring video... What I would give for just one lesson with Yo Yo Ma, Brilliance, I wish to become a Violin maker myself and I very much so look up to Antonio. And the 'Davidov' Was either Jaq Du Pre's cello... Or was it Rostropovich... Either way to even look at it would be awesome... Thank you Yo Yo Ma for being so brillient in what you do... I for one look up to you with an astounding awe. Thank you.

  • Yo Yo Ma is amazing!!!

    I look up to him!!!

I want to play the violin just as good as he can someday!!!! :DDDDDDD

  • you mean cello

  • i have a stradivaius handmade copy (violin) made this year on the waning days of september and it sounds, looks and feels great

  • adcurcie- the type of cello is a stradavarius, not the name of the song. stradavari was the maker. we all know that this is cello suite 1. did you even bother to read what the video said? obviously not.

  • dude this is the prelude to bachs cello suite no.1 not stradivarious

  • Very nice piece and very well written text too.

    Bravo!!!

  • the cello is my favorite instrument and it has such a soothing and relaxing sound Imagine making love to something like this wow how sensual

  • Maybe everybody should stop arguing about God, and concentrate on the passion and beauty that one can put into playing an instrument.

  • I forgot to click reply for German cello comment ja ja!

  • God gave us "freedom to live", can you feel that? There is a spirit!

He neither tell us how to name him (or her? or... could be "that concept" far beyond our understanding) I mean humans have arrived to truth and big conclusions too early!

Certainly God keep being our best invention!

  • Please don't take it personal but that's an ignorant remark.

Not believing is not less logical and I don't believe. But never will I say it is stupid or nonsense to believe. If you believe good for you, bat that's just your truth, respect other's

  • @bastiaan123 words delivered through your lips provoke emotions. however those words only chastise a minority

  • @bastiaan123 i am oblivious to the fact in which medium we discuss this. your keystrokes invoke the same outcome however

  • You're an idiot. People who don't believe in God are logical enough to realize that there may not be meaning to life. Religion is crutch for fearful people, as you've pretty much shown.

  • Germancello...I just have one question for you. (I am assuming you are christian or another monotheistic religion) What about other gods? What...were all people ignorant until judaism? Is that what you are saying? Yes...All our ancestors went to...you know where. Or did all the greek, roman, and egyptian gods merge together? Explain THAT! (And I totally agree with bastiaan)

  • simplemente: precioso.

enhorabuena por el vídeo, sigue haciendo más.

  • I don't believe in God but I think think this video has a beautiful message.

  • why cant they manufacture the sound qulity u get from these stradivarious'. i have heard of them b4 is it just because of the rarity or the excellent sound quility you get from them

  • people are just starting to get more and more retarded as days pass, they don't seem to have that apprecation of high class masterpieces like Bach

  • Oo baroque pitch

  • what is the title of this music?

  • Bach's prelude of cello suite no.1

  • I have a rare Stradivarius, that was made in Columbus, Ohio...It says so, right inside the violin...I think he made it when he was on vacation, sometime about 100 or more years after he had died...

  • LOLLOOLOLOL LMFAO

  • Lies.

  • oh yeah? well i have 6 strad violins... but i did it better and with more people around

  • oh yeah? well i have 6 strad violins... but i did it better and with more people around

that is such a pathetic lie. you dont even have one, and if you did, you would'nt tell anyone.

  • uh yeah your right i dont have any... read my comment again.. i was making fun of the guys who say they have strads...

  • İ have a Stradivarius original violin and there were only 13 of these ever made. İf anyone is intrested in purchasing this violin from me, email me.

first of all, idiot, there were 1000 stradivarius violins made, about 500 survive today, and if you did have one, you would not sell it over the internet, unless you are very stupid.

  • or be able to recieve a few million dollars through paypal and have an armored truck and armed guards to deliver that shit.

  • I have a bridge for sale. It's called the Golden Gate and is located in a fine part of San Francisco.

  • Christy, remember playing one of these violins when you were about twelve? What a treat that was to me, your parent. Thank you for such a gift.

  • I for one only learned to distinguish between different cellists by the way Yo Yo Ma performes this piece.

I heard it before by another artist, but it failed completely next to this performance, which truly is magnificent!

    Thank you Yo Yo Ma!

  • how much is a price of a stradivarius violin?

  • They can range from around $100,000 to a good one for over a million!! I recal the most expensive one is, if sold, I think a few Million dollars!! They are not cheap!!

  • 2,7 mill$

  • ouch!

  • I´m afraid it´s much expensive than 100000 dollars. The family of my mother owe a copy an stradivarius from the 18th century and it´s worth 175000.

  • Actually they start at around a million and go up from there. The cheapest strat of any string instrument that i've heard of is around 1/2 a mill and that was in like the early 60's.

  • Try to research on you tube 'THIS OLD CELLO' also yo-yo ma's video. The cello strad is at least $6,000,000 but the violin has lesser price- $3,000,000

  • how much is a price of a stradivarius violin?

  • thank you!

  • I disagree with you musikgirl1 - Yo-Yo ma has other kind of sound than du Pre, for somebody better kind:) But this depend on what are they performing - Elgar concerto is a piece of du Pre, but for example Dvorak? Yo-yo ma rulez:)

  • one word: beautiful

  • He does have the famous Davidov cello. However he doesn't seem to produce the same beautiful sound

from it as Jacqueline du Pre' did.I guess it may have to do with one playing from the head and the other playing from the soul.

    J

  • prelude of no 1 cello suite. by johann sebastian bach

  • you know i as a performing cellist feel that this suite with all of them have huge parts of bachs soul in them but. ive noticed with performances that when i play the final lines of this suite they seem to h ave a very powerful message betwenn the string crossings. its a very huge statment many celllist dont realize and seem to neglect. but my dear mr ma captures the soul of the statment in this suites espically the last lines

  • Perfect*

  • I love this song! And yes, it was in Master & Commander.

Can you believe Yo-yo Ma left his Stradivarius in a NY taxi?! At least he got it back, what a great cabbie. (I believe it was his Stradivarius but I'm not sure)

  • haha i heard that...pretty funny...to leave a multi-million dollar instrument in a taxi and briefly forgeting about it...haha

  • no it wasnt the strad that was left it was the montagnana petunia my teacher was actually there when this all happend ironically enough.

  • ya its crazy but it wasnt the strad that was left it was the montagnana "his voice" petunia. im actually angry you know jacqueline left him that amazing strad and he gives the montagnana more attention

  • yes bery

  • hey, i like this sagittarius cello!

  • lol

  • So lovely, love it

  • Jacqueline du pre left her Davydov Stradivarius to Yo-Yo Ma...did you know that?!... I was shocked..yeah, it´s a wonderful instrument..=) have a nice day listening to beautiful music!

  • Really like it!!

  • Isn't this the music played in Russell Crowe's movie "Master and Commander"? Great movie.

  • Yeah!

  • Beautiful music! Yeah, I think this Prelude from Bach's Suite No.1 was in the movie. Slava who just passed away last Friday also played this and the other Bach suites at the fall of the Berlin Wall.

  • yes it is

  • Is he playing on his Duport Stradivarius?

  • No, yo yo ma is playing the DAVIDOV strad cello (1712)

  • I met Herbert Goodkind( the appraiser) and author of the Stradivarius Iconogrophy in 1981 in Larchmont N.Y. at his home. He insisted that no cello is better then a Matteo Gofriller. His parting words to me were"if you can't afford a Strad, buy a Dominico Montagnana or a Rocca".We were talking about violins at this point.Well needless to say, at that time they were quite cheap compared to today.I did however get the book from him for $275!

  • THose cello melody can get into my heart! I kind of into cello recently! Thanks for posting!

  • fantastic peice, heard one from esther Nyfenneger but this one sound so much nicer

  • wow that was cool! loved it =D

  • Uhm... I think, no I'm certain that Yo-Yo Ma is actually playing on his Domenico Montagnana cello on his Bach suite recording. Anyway, would be a little ironic...

  • Yes this is his Cello, i've heard this piece enough times that i know for a fact that this is his cello piece

  • I wonder why there is a cellopiece on the background....

  • simply blissful...

  • This is beautiful, and very meaningful.. thank you for playing YOUR song sublimely!

  • That was great video.

  • i think the cello sounded better when jacqueline played it im soory shes my inspiration

  • In my opinion, this Stradivari violoncello is the ne plus ultra with respect to tonal characteristics of any instrument by any maker!! YoYo Ma brings it to perfection!!!!!!!

  • Peaceful... thanks for sharing!

  • oooh the davidov cello sounds nice. I WANT IT!

  • nice one
