  • To paraphrase Nero Caesar: "What a great artist the world as lost". May Madame Piaf live forever. It is she, whom we have lost. Thank God that her songs live on for posterity to enjoy.

    Long live Edith.

  • One of my Favourites... (Just one of many ) :-)

  • It sounds much more meaningful in French, I'd rather listen to it in a completely different language I don't understand just to feel her love and pain.

  • Thank you for this wonderful memory. Maureen Hegarty sings this and it is lovely as well.

  • @TheKeeira tu as toute la raison!

  • I don't remember her head being that large.

    ;P

  • I never realized she could also sound so moving in English !

  • Used to have several Paif records including one from the LP era that was

    entirely in English.

In any language, Piaf was both wonderful and unique. Saw her live on the

Ed Sullivan show when I was a kid.

    She said adieu too soon.

    Tnx 4 the great post.

  • "hymn miłości" - to piosenka pomnik w repertuarze Piaf!

  • she looks like the red queen out of alice in the wonderland in this haha

    lovee piaf!

  • vivre éternellement Edith

  • classic. thrilling.

  • <3<3<3<3 Edith...<3<3<3<3

  • She looks like Judy too

  • thanks.

  • mon coeur est sur le feu.

  • She was 4'8". It was just the film or angle that made her look strange.

  • @xander7ful lol... Thats what I was thinking! I knew she didnt look like that :/

  • such talent! why the self abuse and waste?

  • she had a royal shit life is why.. look up her biography

  • shes not that tiny, its just the camera angle that was filming the screen that makes her body look smaller. edith la môme 4ever

  • This is a kinescope. A film camera recording off early TV.

  • omg! i never realized how tiny she really was.

  • oups tse honte ..............

  • her head is freakin huge in this video

  • I know. It looks like a marionette of Piaf.

  • No, of course not. It's just the angle that it's recorded in.

  • "Rest in Peace" says HELLMASTER666.

your comment statement contradicts your chosen name :S

  • damn look at the size of that head :)) angle of the camera can make a real comedy ehehe. don`t get me wrong :P great song

  • omgoodness that's exactly who she reminds me of Judy. The tragic nature of both their lives and the emotion in their voices amazes me

  • Edith makes me cry again and again after this many years. Rest in peace. Wonderful singer and a woman.

  • Where would I find the French WORDS of this song. I would love to be able to sing this song en fracais. Could someone please write them here? Merci bien!

  • Check out CHEWWINGGUM's version here on Youtube. It's in French and it's incredible.

  • Just look up Hymn L'amour.

  • YEAH!! EDITH!!!

  • I love this version. Cyndi's is amazing though. I think they would have been great friends.

  • actually, Edith piaf was one of the greatest french singers in history. for some one to compare her to Judy Garland is true. they ware both amazing singers. pf course everyone is entitled to thier own opinions.

  • Stop with the OMGs. The comparison of Edith Piaf to Judy Garland and the reasons given are by goatdennis are spot on!

  • Judy Garland. An almost no none. AT least you realize she's a quasi-somebody. Pretty stupid statement.

  • Je t'aime Edith!

    Tu es la meilleure!!!!!!!!

    MERCI!!! Mille fois merci!

  • a thousand times in french

  • I didn't know she spoke English.

  • try this : chimen badi:dis moi que tu m'aimes or entre nous

    the best french voice now!

  • The Song makes a lot more sense in Francais and is a lot more meaningful.

  • you are so right....C'est vrai

  • I so agree. The passion is just not there in English

  • She could sing passionately in english, if you listen to her singing heaven have mercy in english it's so powerful. I think that was alot later on though, it's something she needed practice at. To be able to reach people beyong the confines of language was something very important to her she once said

  • She looks very thin and sad in those years. :( Such a beautiful song, such a great performer!

  • The very best, I can listen to her over and over again. Thierry Amiel does this beautifully too.

  • the truth is that I started crying while watching the movie towards the end. I guess I was too taken with all the action, then I started to feel her pain and her pasion. Great movie, amazing voice and of course some life she lived!"

  • I just finished watching the movie....WOW....what a beautiful voice. Thank you Saint Teresa for sharing her with the world....:)

  • I regret it took me so long to find her.

  • It is beautiful, the song, but why was the photograpy so strange? It makes her look warped in a strange way, just a VERY bad camera angle. It's too bad they messed it up so badly, so unflattering.

  • Looks like it was recorded from a TV broadcast with an old home movie camera. But I like the nostaligic feel of that just the same!

  • I totally agree. Was just thinking the same when I read your comment about it being recorded from TV.

  • Thanks for this song!

  • she steals my heart

  • It is not complete... do you have the complete song in English? I'd like to understand the meaning of the song. My regret I didn't get to live in her time.

  • In the complete video, first she sings it in french and then continues with this reprise in English. This is all of the english version. She did record an audio version of the complete song in english but if you really want to understand the song, translate the french version. Changes had to be made when translating it into english and not necessarily for the better. The words "Hymn to love" arent even in the french version. Its just the title.Take care- Dennis

  • It was simple and romantic in the 30's, but it also was a chaotic time. I admire your courage but I'd rather live right now, because I somehow learned to survive here. I probably would be devastated in the 30's, with no youtube and mp3's, no laser technology and MRI's...I just wouldn't survive!

  • It's important to get back to nature every now and then. Helps to cope with sudden change of things. I'm not against technology progress, in fact I keep up with it yet we never should forget mother nature and the simplicity of life. It teaches us to be thankful for what you have now. In the 30s wonderful things happens too. One thing for sure, someone very special was born. If I can I would kiss God for that.

  • A very beautiful comment. God I wish there were more people who thought like this. There would certainly be less war and hatred in this beautiful world of ours.

  • just so moving & beautiful... such a voice, from a "little sparrow !

Edith Piaf!!!

Nothing is worth the French version, without doing chauvinism! !!! But you had reason she is. ...exeptionnel, she is... Edith Piaf!!!

  • And that "clamedia" is spelled CHLAMYDIA! LOL.

  • @smellmeter: Try THIS!! CLA Media. It's a title, she is French, and not meaning chlamydia. Her user name isn't nearly as freaky as yours, BTW!!

  • You are a small, small person. Pity you can't find the true beauty. Do yourself (and your addled brain) a favor and watch the story of her life, La Vie En Rose.

  • She had a beautiful voice...She should have been given respect...by the 'Church', by all...

  • Religion is poison. Who cares?

  • BigDaddy1968's comments are reflective of the typical right-wing religious nut jobs these days. The Great Piaf was brilliant beyond ANY "christian" music contemporary or otherwise. The fact that the catholic church refused her proper burial rights is brought to mind by just such stupid and ridiculous religious sentiments.

  • What do you mean "gotten saved." She was deeply devoted to God and prayed to Jesus constantly. She was also a kind person, though not born to respectability -- which is certainly not her fault.

But thanks for the unbelievably comic idea of the great Piaf singing the insipid repertory of Contemporary "Christian" music!

  • Well, she sang Exodus beautifully and thats close(Jewish)! Actully, alot of her songs sound like religious songs.Goatdennis

  • @DirkVA , You say she was a kind person, but after watching the film made about her, La Vie En Rose, she wasen't portrayed as a nice person, but quite a rude and nasty person to mostly who worked for her.

  • @pitbull466 What does it matter if she was hard at times her singing was great. I like to see anyone live through what she did and not be hardened if she even was. She will always be the sweet little sparrow to me singing to my soul.

  • I wish she had gotten saved. She would have been GREAT singing Contemporary CHRISTIAN music.

And I should know. After all, I'm...

    Big Daddy

  • First of all she was a devout christian and secondly she died before the music blight called CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN was ever concocted by born again trash bands. but other than that...

  • You are a bigoted moron.

  • Her deep emotions poured through every song she sang. I am learning so much of her through this website and research on my own. Thanks for posting these truly amazing and treasured songs through her.

  • very thanks for this magnific song!!!

  • Pretty damn good!

Wonderful voice, We don't have Singers like this now and it's sad.

  • Doesn't she, though? It must have been the camera angle and/or the camera's optics.

  • soooo wonderfull but does she look like betty boop!!

    Thank you very much

    So beautiful
