I'm thinking Flo could have been a Kim Weston, but ya know. Who is Kim Weston figuratively speakin?. Marketing has a lot to do with it. Diana got the most marketing.
Okay is it just me or does she sound God Awful singing this? Sorry folks shame she got a raw deal with Motown. But this lady in all honesty was no great singer. Okay at best and clearly not a lead or what would be a successful solo act. The talent was not there. She would not have been a star. Should have stayed singing in the background with the Supremes , at least she would not have died poor.
@waynegreer72 clearly not a lead and did not have the get up and go attitude needed to be huge. she spent her energy on the past and in negative territory. i would love to have heard from the guys who recorded her solo album. i bet they would have a different story for the myth that has been created around florence. she was great in the supremes. period.
If you have a facebook I have created a group just for Flo! It's called "Florence Ballard Fans!" make sure you type in the excamation point lol But please join! There are 29 members as of today but the more the better! Let's give Flo all of the love she deserved! Thanks! :)
The title says it all. Everything was(and still is)wonderful about Flo! She didn't deserve what happened to her. Thinking of her today(wonder if Diana and Berry Gordy are)
This certainly a "WOnderful" video! Love all the pics and FLo had a fantastic voice .Motown should have made her lead vocalist of the Supremes from time to time.I guess i can understand her frustration with Barry Gordy and Diana Ross. Here she was with all this talent and was only reduced to a background vocalist. What a shame.BUt once again great video (LOve the transitions)
Yes Flo had a great voice. Her voice was soulful which was not unique in those days but Berry Gordy wanted a voice that was different that would appeal to Whites and Blacks alike. (aka more money). That's why he made Diana the lead singer. Obviously he made the right decision because they became the superstars that they are known for today. However it pushed Flo in the background and she became bitter and started drinking, was fired and was never able to recover. Yes she died of a broken heart.
It is a shame such a great voice cut off because of one man's sexual urgies. Such a beautiful, so haunting. I believe that Tammy and hers were the best women's voices to come out of Motown during that period.
@Soullover212 florence was the master of her own destiny as much as the other members of this great trio. women are stong not meek and victims. whatever happened to that sentiment. florence's fans have created a victim. florence seemed confident to me but maybe her choices helped create the situation. they sure made great music together though. this is my favourite florence song.
I always try to see both sides and don't like to jump to conclusions because things aren't always what we think we we are looking in. But this whole situation with Florence was so horrible that it has to be true. I could not imagine being in a super group getting steady gigs and making many albums and t.v. appearances to welfare. I have never been so evil that I would hurt someone's little kids by taking their parent's livelihood away. It's too bad that fans are just getting the whole story.
"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." ~Aristotle
Meaning, the Supremes sound more better than the individual singers. Flo was definitely part of their magic. May she live on in our hearts, forever and a day.
I do too, eeverybody keeps saying that she didn't have the voice or the star quality that Diana had but I think if given the chance she couldv'e been just as good as Diana as much as Diana fans hate to admit it, I like Diana's stuff but at the same time to say Flo wasn't as good as Diana is not true.
Timing comes into play here too. There are a number of breakout solo acts that took years to develop, giving the audience a breather in between and time for career realignment and reinvention. Her timing was early to mid 70's, which she did start to develop but was cut short by her untimely death.
Also, timing and re-alignment of career is important. A solo career doesnt happen in one album attempt. Even Mcartney took several years to get momentum after the Beatles and he started a year before the breakup. Sometimes the audience needs a break, but then yearns for a reappearance or a reinvention a couple of years later. The 70's was a better reappearance timing for Florence which she had started before her untimely death.
This song shows some of the potential Flo had with her sensual and passionate voice. She did great - but had the potential to do much more. She looked great right up to her last days.
Florence Ballard is a beautiful gift to us, even now. Those of us who are musicians, have battled depression, abuse and insecurities sometimes need years to regain control over things that have been shattered. I can't believe that Flo had the energy to do this!
Gahhhhh she was so gorgeous @ very talented..dis is good quality musix you kan tell she had more to offer than jus being a supreme besides she was the brain of the supremes..thank you JennieBug88 for this posting keep um coming..R.I.P. flo payday is coming afta while!

I would have loved to see/hear Ms. Ballard do an EP of jazz tunes. Right, she could probably have done just about any genre' musically. Sad that she died so very young.
This song is very well produced and brings out the best in Flo..The Producer obviously cared about the quality of this cut and cared about Miss Ballard's vocal. I have seen complaints here on youtube about Flrence's vocals not being as balanced or professional sounding as Miss Ross'...that is simply because more care was taken with Diana to bring out her best. The music is often as good as the Producer,Florence got a chance to shine on this one.
I agree. No Flo doesn't bring powerhouse vocals on this one but it still is one of her best solo recordings. GREAT production, sweet backing and very pretty vocals from Florence. I had never heard her sing so sweet with ABC until I heard this. This deserves to be a smooth R&B classic
@susuemikado I was thinking the same thing. Back in those days Diana's voice sounded top notch, cause it was. She sounded like the consummate professional she was or is. Flo's voice lacks umph here, sounds off key, wrong breathing and phrasing and timing in too many spots.
Although the Supremes were before my time I surely appreciate good music and talent. Florence should have had her chance to shine. I believe she was too smart and strong for many peoples tastes. Perhaps she did not take a solo deal with Motown because she would really have been at their mercy then, and maybe she thought they were up to no good and would have her tied up while not promoting her at all. The music business is so nasty and I believe Florence literally died of a broken heart.
but she did have her chance to shine many times over....this is a great song and yet she still did not shine. its strange how that happens in showbiz but history is littered with stories like hers... a good voice but lacking that ooomph.
while a ton of voices that lack oomph, personality, and plain good taste get the limelight and continue to litter the airwaves...it's all about who gets the best marketing...talent has always had very little to do with it.
I wrote and produced a hip hop/soul song that samples this track. If anyone wants to check it out, give me a response and I'll send it to you. Peace and Love.
Florence was cheated from the world around her. Motown was her life and they took that away from her. Hadn't she lived she would have the succesful solo career. Flo you will be remembered and you are simply Everything Wonderful. We will keep the legacy alive
in defense motown after firing her from the supremes offered her a solo deal but she told them to shove it up theyre you know what she shouldve taken it.
what u say is conjecture. had she lived her life, i would guess, would have repeated the pattern...up and down. enjoy what she left us. that is her contribution.
Faith Evans does look like Flo. And I've always thought its funny how much Kelly Rowland looks like Mary Wilson. She could be Mary's daughter. She doesn't have the body Mary had. I think the Supreme should be none other than Lauryn Hill.
I love you flo..we should have been Husband and wife.. I would have never allowed anybody to hurt you in any way! you're everything a woman should be.
Just my opinion...I think Kim Fields would make a great Diana Ross and like you say either Faith Evans or Tisha Cambell-Martin or Kim Cole from Living Single would make a great Florence Ballard. I really thnik Tisha Cambell looks more like Flo too.
I actually think R&B singer Rhiana looks a whole lot like Flo, and actress Taraji P. Henson from Hustle & Flow said she dreams of playing Diana Ross...I think the girl could pull it off too...BUT as for this song, Flo's voice was so priceless. I get happy, angry, and sad every time I hear it. What an amazing talent!
