All of the commercials back in the day were extremely cheerful and in the 70's to have someone crawling on glass in front of thousands of viewers it was seen as more grotesque than it would be viewed today. The "art" aspect of it would be the small odd clip of "the terrible and real" within a large amount of "happiness and fallacies". I find it interesting. Thanks for posting it here.
We could squabble about definitions until Doomsday, but the point is that Chris Burden did something and he put it on television. For whatever reason, you came here and you watched it, and that's all he wanted. He didn't ask you to like it, or understand it, or care about it. So feel free to not like, understand, or care about it. Whether or not it is "art", it is "something", so please don't just dismiss it because it doesn't fit a traditional label.
Let me say something viewers, this.. is not art.. this is stupidity. And anyone who probably cannot see that, has something wrong in their heads. Those are true words.
"Through the Night Softly." This film was shot by Charles Christopher Hill. They saw the glass and pulled over. Chris stripped down to undies and Chas grabbed the camera. The spot purchase was sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
jest anegdotka, kiedy COUM goszczące z występem w jednej z amerykańskich galerii doprowadziło do mdłości tak odważnego performera, jakim był Chris Burden.
Now this was the 1st decent work I've seen of his! In this work there is a perfect balance between risk and artwork. The greatest works of art are also the ones which take the greatest risk. Not physical risk but risk in the form of the "legitimization" of a creation of art. Chris seems to intuitively understand this but this work was more successful in capturing that spirit. Kudos on this one to Chris!
Risk has nothing to do with art. There's been plenty of dreadful artists in the twentieth century but this fucker is the worst of the worst. All the vanity of Warhol coupled with none of the wit. His pre-"shoot" stuff had a lot of promise, but "shoot" and all that followed are utter gash. He's also a world class prat, look up the facts about his resignation a few years back.
what about his resignation? i assume you mean from ucla... he was already upset over administrative issues and budget cuts, and then a student brings a gun to a school and isn't immediately punished? and he was wrong to resign?
This is the stupidest I've ever seen. I'm glad it made your Ego happy to show such an assinine thing to the viewing public. I'm hoping the guy who sold you valuable ad time for this crap was fired.
Wow, has YouTube become some kind of hating site? I see so many stupid, ignorant and irrelevant comments on people's uploads.
Shit.
Pocketmego, at least people are posting things up to keep the archives alive. There's no where else in the world that you could get to see this, so be grateful.
Thanks a bunch, I have been looking all over for this. Would have been amazing to see it in its original context (1973 on a TV).

If he was really serious about the glass, he would have taken his underwear off.
