In response I can say it's a good thing people don't get upset every time we refer to a boat or ship as "she" (which is in EVERY case). But that's the difference between men and women I guess. But it DOES get rather old when someone absolutely beats you over the head with this crap. That's when it goes too far and only makes you look like an ass. People tired quickly of this stuff.
God is not a man or a woman, neither male or female. I understand that she's trying to be controversial, but I think calling God a "she" just sounds childish.
I remember when this speech aired, including my mother and aunts in their thick stockings and hairnets SCREECHING that Helen and all of "her kind" would all be destroyed at Aarmageddon.
It was the 70s, I was a goofy teenage boy, and I had a huge crush on Helen Reddy!
Her looks, her voice, and her strong attitude made me helplessly in love. If you're reading this, Helen, I may never get to meet you but I'll always be a fan!
It was definitely a sign of that particular period that assigning a female gender to a deity would ruffle feathers. I happen to like "I Am Woman" (& I'm a dude).
Seems so funny nowadays that people got so bent out of shape over this. Now, that we have people walking up to accept awards drunk, stoned, swearing and using the "F" word (to the point where they now frequently air live awards shows on a ten-second delay) , this all seems rather inocuous, doesn't it?
This clip was a sign of the times. Nobody ever called the Earth "father". God is the father (protector/provider). Earth is the mother (nurturer/guidance-giver). The yin-yang. Helen is a fine singer. I didn't appreciate her singing in the early 70s like I do now. My mother LOVED her "No Way to Treat a Lady" so much.
Your articulate response to my comment is a marvel. Smart, witty, and intelligent. You've shown how far your education has taken you and you're displaying it in a public forum. Thank you for replying -- "get a job asshole" -- you must be so proud of yourself? Some people may read this and think was a waste of a human being youo are! But I defend your right to be immature and crass!
What a ridiculous debate!! Why is there such a big deal over the gender of GOD? The minute we "humanize" the power of God with a gender the more you deminish the power and love of spirit. Whatever your belief system and this particular need to believe that God is a MAN or a WOMAN is a private matter. God is much bigger than a HUMAN MALE or FEMALE, so just let others believe what they need to believe in order to have FAITH. Humans deserve better than this!
Well, whether or not anyone particcularlly likes what she said is beside the point. Don't you all get it? She was just being gutsy, and i definitly admire her for that!
Besides, some people actually do believe in a Goddess as opposed to a God. But, mmost folks would never have the guts to say it. But, Helen has always been exceptional! You go girl!
I hate her. That snobby twang in her voice is so irritating. It's as though her music is geared towards women who only wear lots of lipstick and stylish hats

Ofcourse she would say that because she was standing up for Women's Rights. I loved her and the song and I am a MAN. Go Helen and Go ALL Women.

Makes sense that if there is a god it would be a female. After all, females bear life and not males! Helen rocks!

Bravo Helen! Also, that has got to be one of the shortest and to the point acceptance speeches I have ever heard.

Helen Reddy has a point. God could be a "she". After all, women bring forth life not men. Ever hear of mother nature?

you must have lost a job to a woman who was better than you, either that or you can't get a woman. you seem awfully bitter, and insecure.

Brilliant...great that god gets to be a she rather than a he for a change. What is it with all these insecure men?
