  • greatsong. your showing your .age if you remember this one. i thought i hit gold when i found this one. dolly parton covered this did not do a bad job. i m still looking for one that evades me. it was played on a horn with some guy at the beginning saying" this song was written for someone i don't even know yet and then something about a melody for a girl..searched and searched

  • @windymeadows2 Here's your answer: youtube, Paul Revere and the Raiders, "Melody for an Unknown Girl".

  • OMG! I haven't heard this in DECADES--but I still know the lyrics verbatim--what memories went flitting through my mind as I sang along! Funny, isn't it; how music (and scent) can transport you back in time? We were so idealistic and so innocent...

  • Some of the best lyrics ever written. Astonishing. Then and now.

  • this song is one of the greatest songs of all time.

    pete uk

  • i'll always remember hearing songs of this era played on that wonderous japanese invention my older sister had: the transistor radio. it was the space age,but now it seems so long ago.

  • its such a shame ,, im too young to remember this tune ,,,, i was a baby ,,, but i come on here cause i hate modern music ,, and truly love this haunting beautiful tune ,, only to put up with a modern techno advert before it ,, come on youtube ,, dont spoil it ??? if i wanted crap ? i wouldnt be on this side of youtube ,, i love jim reeves ,, del shannon ,, billy fury ,, please stop these adverts ,,, if not , put adverts that suite the music ?? wouldnt mind dream coats or similar

  • The 60's echoing, echoing...History folding into history, pages worn and worn...don't be concerned, it will not harm you.

  • This takes me back, I remember Val Doonican singing this on his Saturday evening show in the mid sixties. In fact I always thought it was his original song. Thanks for posting this.

  • This song came out in Jan 0f 1966, I went to Vietnam 2 weeks later Feb, 3-1966. That is one song I will never forget, Or the Girl I was with when I 1st hurd it.

  • in court next month for mortgage arrears, the cow of a wife i married did a runner. Listening to this song brings back memories of happier days in my life

  • I love learning about the HISTORY of the songs I Love / the IMAGERY, the WORDING the CONCEPT and the MESSAGE of this song is so BEAUTIFUL, UNIVERSAL, and EVERLASTING / this song is really The True Story Of My Life / The Four Tops took this song and put some PASSION & FEELING into it / this song always reminds me of how BEAUTIFUL & JOYFUL you feel at the beginning of your infatuation with someone

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG. NETS OF WONDER. GOOD LYRIC.

  • What kind of turntable is used in the video?

  • @LucasToast Sony PS-LX500 linear tracker

  • Cn you post the b side please?

  • I am from Cuba and when I came to this wonderful Country, which I love so much, and heard this wonderful song, I felt in love with it, and I bought the 45 and still playing on my old record player, so I have also the CD,

  • This is one of my favorite oldies songs!

  • One of the greatest songs of the last 50 years, especially this arrangement with the Jack Nitsche "wall of sound" orchestration that is so intense and rhythmic. Thank you for puttig it on Youtube.

  • GOOD OLD SONG

  • My all time number one favorite song! Thanks for sharing.

  • linear tracking turntables are scurry looking.

  • Here is one that came to me through the mists of time!

  • I was young and so were you! Fig N. (not real name) this song seemed to on the radio every time we were together! I never forgot, or ever will. still love the love we shared! C.H.

  • GayDannyBoy, the radio station was WNEW-FM and it was the DJ Sct Muny's favorite song. He played it everytime he went off the air.

  • very good words to this song..........i am still chasing that "butter fly of love"

skype maybe we can share some thing of the past iceman756

  • Probably the best 1 hit wonder of all time. What a wonderfully poetic song.

  • 1966 was a wonderful time of life. simple played till street lights came on at 9:30pm in summer was wonderful. we played till we worked up a sweat but yet this song played as i caught butterflies on flowers such as roses and zinias.

  • It was one of those korny songs that i hated because I liked it so much. You know what I mean? It was a haunting song. I didnt want to chase love like Bob Lind. But prophetically....i still chase that illusive butterfly of love.

  • Why oh why has music got so bad ? Simple and wonderful music from a time of great innocence.

  • amazing how the words still stuck in my mind after all these years - I spontaneously sang the first verse to my 16 yr old tonight & had to look this up only to find this marvelous recount of this great song! well done everyone - remember well!

  • Don't be concerned, it will not harm you - it's just me pursuing something I'm not sure of ...

Anything like that around today? Does anyone care? Sometimes it's a little hard being yanked back into that wonderful musical time. I miss it.

  • A magical track! I well remember hearing this on Radio London at school lunch time (in 6th form common room). I remember this and 'Try Too Hard' by the Dave Clark Five being played in succesion (quite a contrast). I'd love to have the days of 'The Pirates' again ! Val Doonican covered this track, but we won't go there !!!!

  • this is one of the best songs ever written.Never get tired of listening to it.

  • I dreamed this song once about 12 yrs ago, not remembering ever hearing it before. Then a week later, in the night the man I was in love with, left a msg on my cell and he sang it to me. I love this song!

  • mystic lov it

  • When I first heard this song many years ago, I remember thinking it was a song about a creepy stalker.

  • Went to a Bob Lind concert last night in Erhart, SC, the man's still got it! Great songs he has written.

  • This singer has the phrasing of Phil Spector's style of recording. Also listen to the left channel and there it is, the wall of sound.

  • Great song. Bob Lind has a most wonderful voice. Reminiscent of Bobby Vee's great voice.

  • My theme song

  • I had only heard the Aretha version of this song. I thought it such a brilliant lyric, that I had to hear the original. I prefer her version, but it's still one of the most amazing lyrics ever.

  • @rellenoz You should check out Mister Zero by Bob Lind. The lyrics in it paint such a vivid picture. Its amazing.

  • I think i've heard this version once or twice before. I'm more familiar with The Four Tops version from their STILL WATERS ablum from 1970, which is one of my favorites from them and that period.

  • I too was 10 at the time kinda touch my soul back then & still does - cool song - still kinda spooky lol

  • I too was 10 at the time kinda touch my soul back then & still does - cool song

  • why are songs like this so much better than the shite of today

  • I've heard a kazillion songs in my lifetime. If I had to pick 5 favorite songs - this one would be one of them!!!

  • @taxman14072 You chose well.

  • Such a unique and beautiful song. Always takes me to a difference place and time. I used to listen to this late at nights on my transistor radio under my pillow. Thanks for posting.

  • & when I die & when I'm gone - this is what this song makes me think of - & also a time that is gone forever...

  • Hello gayman

    I share your emotions

    God Bless You and Mum

    Robert

  • I was 18 when this song came out ,and just been dumped by my first serious girlfriend :( and just to cheer me up the walker brothers brought out The sun aint gonna shine anymore :)

  • garfieldcat5, i luv this song , if i remember right, bob was a songwriter who had stage frite & didnt like his own voice, pals convinced him to go for it. i can play this& it has bizzare chord changes, fun 2 play, i think its about a guy or spirit of a,gal thats past on, his nervous vocals & limited range make it better, saw ur comment 2 anglo, dont no wat he said , but a nazi is shit , thanks gar

  • reminds me of a girl i knew,i still think of her.

  • Hi Garfield, Could I have heard this song in 1965? What year was it popular? Know? Thanks, in anycase. Love it.

  • Comment removed

  • WOW, how could I have forgotten this song!? Thanks for the memories!

  • like it, but i like aretha franklins version better!

  • cool to hear it in stereo..........song/music has a mysterious nature/sound to it

  • Mr. Lind: Thanks for this song. Magnificent in every way.

  • Bob Lind recorded this for the World Pacific label (by the time this was originally released, it was bought by and would be soon folded into Liberty [itself bought out by United Artists and phased out by 1972] ).

With the sound quality of your videos, have you considered becoming a remastering engineer? You've put some CD and even bloated-reputation 180 gram vinyl reissues to shame.

  • What a great song with such a great message. If only we had songs like this now!!! Thanks for having this to listen to!!

  • There's a song that's very similar in spirit, probably recorded around the same time, God, what's it called...very...elusive. :) I caught a few seconds of it on an oldies station recently but, it got away from me. Any suggestions?

  • @midmodgal now u got me curious, and itll bother me till i find out wat song . thanx alot. ha ha.

  • @tommieparch If I ever find it I'll let you know!!!

  • I love this song! This is my favorite version and the 45 makes it all the more better. Thanks for posting.

  • This is great! Smoke a doob and listen. I guarantee you'll absolutely pee your pants! Thanks for posting this. I'm dying here!

  • I love this song . It reminds me of my family in heaven, I have seen signs EVERYWHERE..♥

  • I know this is before my time since I was born in the 1980's but growing up I used to listen to oldies everyday on the oldies station. Whenever this song came on I was so stoked. Now when I turn on the oldies station all they play is 80's music, go figure huh. Makes me scared to think that one day awesome songs like this may be lost forever.

    Great Song.

  • You can convert this or any youtube video to an mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • Hal Blaine drums, Claude "Leon Russell" string arrangements. Originally this was a b side to Jenny Come Home

  • @capitolemiproducer

    Or Cheryls going home maybe

  • Thank you.

  • cool turntable!!!

  • In 1969 I got my first car. And the radio station out of NYC, FM played this every afternoon at the same time. I always made sure I was in the car at that time to hear it. Brings back memories, of life for me and this world when it was simpler and fun.

Love hearing it, then and now.

  • I agree. if I recall correctly it was scott muni's sign off at 5:57pm on wnew 102.7 in new york. it recalls a less complicated time in my life and am pleased to hear, yours, too.

  • Im 34 years old this is one of my dads favorite.13 years ago i p2p songs for him from way back in the day this is one of them.My dad is a human jukebox......lol so am i.sentimental lady is a good one as welll

  • Best version, super hi fidelity for you-tube! How can the original vinyl have no scratches??

    Great.

  • Haunting and achingly beautiful. I had this single when I was younger. It'll always be one of my favorite songs. Thanks for posting this!

  • One of the greats, what ever happened to bob lind?

I heard a rumour that he ended up being killed in vietnam

  • I WISH GLEN CAMPBELL COULD HAVE RECORDED THIS ALSO!!

  • @slinney1: Glen Campbell did cover this as an album cut (no single release though). Pretty nice Nashville Sound-style arrangement on his version.

  • who the hell is BOB LIND ? good one. thanks

  • I love this song, havent heard it since I was a little girl...brought tears to my eyes...I used to take my dads radio and on KFRC (A.M. station) played that and I'd dance on our front lawn singing..I was a whole 5 years old...thank you for bringing back that wonderful memory..<3

  • @SwtAurora Isn't it great when a song can bring you back to a time of wonderful memories and you can relive them again? I was 10 when this song came out in 1966 and never forgot it my whole life. I listened to it on 77 WABC AM in New York. There isn't a song that can make me smile more than when I hear this one. Lovely, happy childhood memories.

  • @vcoaster Yes, it is great!

  • i love this song i have this exact copy lol wow its like 35 years old the song never gets old . the "B" side is truly julies blues another gr8 song . thanks for posting it

  • I remember this song as a kid. All these years I never forgot it either. Thanks for posting this. I will always be a big fan of Bob Lind

  • ...this song makes me sad it was my brothers favorite...he bought the single in'66...he passed away almost 4 years ago...RIP Gary...!

  • Listening to this song makes me want to play LP again...!! it is something very different, the feeling of putting the LP, turning on the turntable - the needle comes down and ............

send you way back to 1966.... I was in 4th Grade..!

  • I've been looking for this. Thank you.

  • great song -- Can't beat the stereo version -- Thanks

  • for lyndy....beautiful you are xxx

  • I love this song!! Great memories as a kid in the 60's!

  • Don't be concerned, it will not harm you

It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of

Across my dreams with nets of wonder

I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

    [Instrumental Interlude]

Across my dreams with nets of wonder

  • I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps

Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind

I might have even called your name

As I ran searching after something to believe in

You might have seen me runnin'

Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind

    If you remember something there

That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'

  • You might wake up some mornin' To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind And if you're quick enough to rise You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow Out on the new horizon You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings And if the sleep has left your ears You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow Don't be concerned, it will not harm you It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of Across my dreams with nets of wonder....
  • I love this song. Bob set the standard for folk-rock with poetic lyrics, and was then followed by Jimmy Webb, Harry Nilsson. Beautiful string pad, thank you Jack!

  • i like this version with val's version

  • Another time in pop music to be sure.

  • another great tune from the past

  • Forget Val Doonican! This is Bob Lind's song, he wrote it; the legendary Jack Nitzsche produced it. Last I heard Bob was living in Florida and trying to make it again as a performer. Wherever you are Bob, God Bless you. You were and are a true talent.

  • This in indescribable, beyond great.

  • Thank you for posting this with great audio quality. What brand of turntable is that?

  • I love this song still... I remember listening to it on a 45 when I was a girl.... the lyrics are poetically brilliant....

  • Thats' the 45 I had in 1978 the re issue. The exact one you're playing. I had a lot of re issues of that Label I bought from various artist frim 1978 to 1983 my days as a DJ.

  • how can anyone give this a thumbs down?

  • @TheMustangsally75 Some people don't have an ounce of sentimentality in their souls, particularly these people growing up today with rap and the recently deceased fad of heavy and death metal. There's a good live version of this from Gazzarri A Go Go on Facebook. I mean, I knew a 39 year old guy that hated George Harrison, as if he could've ever sung a song that deserved this guy's disdain. I couldn't imagine being forced to hear Metallica for the rest of my life: I'd be one angry dude.

  • I'm 54 now.I was ten when this came out. What a great tune.I had a 45 of this and I wore it down to nothing........Love this great 60's stuff...It'll be around forever to let future generations know what REAL singing was...not the crap called music today....

  • sounds and confuses with me with bobby golsboro and honey

  • I think songs like this tend to tug at your heartstings because the instrumentation seems to suggest something beyond us, something eternal and we all reflect on what was dear to each of us in the past and we know what lies in the future - that wjich is inevitable!

  • I give away my age as an old codger here-----this was big hit in around 1967 my senior year in high school.

With the Vietnam War raging, this song symoblized the echo of hope of the elusive butterfly of love. This is a timeless song and I only wish Bob Lind would have had more success than he did.

  • This song brings back great memories of Camp Wendake , located on the shores of Lake Huron. Every year is brilliant. Looking forward to another summer week of pure love. Though some have not returned , you are always in my thoughts. ' M , F and B ' , I cherish the time you are with me , with us.

    Keep well

    Peace

    Namaste

  • great song, there's a version by a woman, do u know who was it?

  • I love this song...Thanks!

  • Dang!!! this brings back memories, great song!!

  • This is good--but I still like Val Doonican´s

    version the most!

  • This has been my favorite song since the first time I heard it when I was very young

  • Just close your eyes, listen to the beautiful strings and percussion, as well as well as Bob's earnest rendering of a beautiful song (with subtle tonal shading), and let this take you away.......

  • this brings back memories of my late mum , she used to play this on her grundig radiogram ahhh memories....thanks for posting lovely song..

  • I always feel tears coming when I hear this song... not sure why. It feels good, but it makes me want to cry. Lovely song. Reaches very deep.

  • @absue It is okay to cry.

  • A golden treasure forever! Mary

  • This is a GREAT song. It was one of my older brother's favorites back in '66. He was 16 and I was 10. Ouch! But great memories....

  • dig that cool 60's stereo separation............ COL (chuckle out loud...... duh)

  • i was a child and remember this one so well. This came out the summer before i started grade school that fall. dreamy melody of a warm spring day.

  • Wow............does this tune stir up some memories....I was in the 8th grade in 1966

  • I really don't understand why the beauty of songs like this do not occur any longer. It is beautiful lyrics and pure feeling--the sixties were not about poetry per se or anything terribly deep,m just a purity of spirit and telling human experience with sincerity. Why after all of this time is there nothing like this at all in the world? I've never figured it out. Anyhow this is a truly beautiful song

  • Spring 1966 - Hartman Jr High in Houston TX 15 yrs old. This is one of my favorites

  • this song is beautiful and full of life. and romantic.

  • unreal song best of the sixties xxxx lol

  • Great Track. Remember the old man having this on the reel to reel. Great Stuff

  • very haunting song . this song came out in 1966. the year my father died.1 was 16 years old.used to hear this song,,made me think of my father.this is song i will never forget.

  • Notice none of the verses rhyme.

  • Pure poetry...celestial images blur the fine line between reality and fantasy.

  • I almost wept when I found this wonderful song of my teenage years here. Just fantastic. Thankyou.

  • Where have you gone Bob Lind. All we have now is Lady Gaga, Snoop Dog, and countless other phonies-----we need you Bob.

  • I may have commented on this before; but, I really like this tune. It has the mystery, tone, lyrics, and verve that most young fellows were drawn to in the 60.s. To this day I find the song quite haunting.

  • Boy, this comes across NICE!

  • Saw BOB LIND in S.C. Mar. 26 and he did a super show...sang the old songs and some new and his voice is still super...he is a very down to earth type of guy....

  • @AngloSaxonBob Ok you idiots, knock off the nasty comments and off topic bullshit or I'll disable commenting for this video.

  • Thats strike two

  • @garfieldcat5 Garfield. The guy is neanderthal, ignore him.He wont go to heaven.will be interesting to see what comments he can make when he becomes intelligent..

  • @garfieldcat5 There are some planks around in this world. Weel said Garfield

    Lovely post!!

  • @garfieldcat5 Hahahahaha. That's the spirit!
