  • its not reach, its penetration. the FBI said you need a minimum of 12" of penetration with handgun bullets to reach all vital organs

  • @HunterKiller308 They were accounting for every possible angle, like if you were shooting through as much flesh as possible before reaching vitals.

Fighting with a knife is a TOTALLY different proposition.

  • @Kylef7735 how to you figure? if i stab you in the side i want a blade long enough to tickle your heart or lungs

  • @HunterKiller308 See thats not gonna need 12 inches (and also in a blade fight lethal strikes are not a good first choice)

What the fbi is considering is like going through an arm, and a pectoral muscle, and then vitals, that isnt going to happen with a blade.

  • @Kylef7735 lethal strikes are not a good first choice? what are you talking about, they are the only choice.

why do think a blade cant go through and arm and a pec? meat is meat, as long as you dont hit bone that thing is sinking to the hilt

  • @HunterKiller308 You do not know much about knife fighting.

In knife fighting, because you cannot reach the CNS (Brain or spine) the most effective Instant stop targets are actually joints and major muscle groups (forearms, biceps, behind the calf and knee, front of thighs, back of thighs) because when you slice someones tendons and ligaments, their use of that arm or leg is instantly gone, even with the most devastating wounds to vital organs, when its done with a blade, it is not instant.

  • @Kylef7735 You dont have a clue what your talking about kid. You thing someone cant get in close and slide a blade between your vertebrae or the base of the skull at the nape of the neck? stabbing up under the chin, busting through your pallet and into your brain with no bone to stop it. you can put a blade through the nasal cavity, a direct line to the brain with no bone to stop it. how about pushing your blade up under the sternum and ripping it side to side, totally destroying heart and lungs

  • @HunterKiller308 everything i just noted is a kill shot, and i will be delivering as many of them as i can as fast as i can, you go ahead kid, take out an arm or a leg, ill take out your life. on a side note a long, wide bladed kinfe like the OSS is far more damaging than any handgun bullet in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, knows how to twist and rip the blade when its inside you, carving massive wound channels in your organs

  • @HunterKiller308 You are living in a fantasy world if you will believe any of that can be accomplished in a fight. What...are you expecting your target to stand there and let you do all that? The way you talk its like youve only ever encountered stationary targets, i would love to see you try to do all these moves against a live body. All of them are pinpoint targets, while the major muscle and tendon groups are very large targets, easier to strike.

  • @Kylef7735 LMFAO

you think i cant hit someone in the nose in a fight? cant hit them in the back of the head or under the chin in a fight? your dead wrong, put a blade in that same hand and its hitting your brain. you dont have a clue what your talking about, telling people its better to maime the person doing you harm than ending the threat as soon as it starts. keep your BS to yourself

  • @HunterKiller308 Read Contemporary knife targeting by michael janich, he tells you more than i ever could.

The shortest way to put it across to you is, Lethal strikes with a knife are Not instantaneous, heck even with a gun the only "one shot stops" are all to Nervous targets and you Cannot hit those in a knife fight. Your best options for instant stops are disabling targets, cause when you cut all the muscles and tendons in someones forearm, they INSTANTLY cannot use that hand. End of story

  • diggin that mod

  • Reasons I'm not a fan: 420 is the cheapest crappiest steel. Easy to machine though which is why the AUS8 is so much more. The Kraton handle is great too, until you accidentally get some bore solvent on it, then it disintegrates into black glue - and it doesn't take much. Ask me how I know. Last but not least, it is made by slave children in Taiwan.

  • I have heard that double edged knives are illigal for use in millitary applications due to some geneva convention stuff... can someone please shed some light on this? i mean if you can't use it in the military then why does nutnfancy say thats what he reccomends it for?

  • @anticannoneer

Fuck the Geneva Conventions. Any stool in a bar fight, my friend.

  • @anticannoneer I don't know if double bladed knives are illegal in the military, but I have used a double bladed boot knife on more than 6 combat operations.

  • @anticannoneer don't worry double edged knives are not only legal, but preferred in a humanitarian sense. the geneva conventions outlaw sawback or serrated knives for combat use because it causes unnecessary suffering to the poor chap being stabbed/cut i.e. torn flesh and bone. double or single edged combat knives are legal. however this is not a legal concern for people operating in regions not under the geneva conventions

  • I'm not sure if I would trust those guards, it may but it still creeps me out.

  • @soldier715 I purchased one... probably just going to replace the guards with steel

  • I gave this knife to my brother prior to his Iraq deployment in 2009. He carried this for over a year there and is now in SF. It is still mounted to his plate carrier. He loves it. It still looks brand new and has yet to need a resharpening. What a great knife.

  • those finger guards definitely won't stop a knife. I wanted to get rid of the top one for more control and better reverse grip (really helps!) and I could easily cut it of with my tenacious, almost no resistance

  • @keesurt It is really more for keeping your fingers back, knife duals are incredibly rare, and even more rare is the ability to use a fine motor skill like stopping a knife.

  • @armedtetrapod very good point. although i have heard more stories of succesfull self defense of knife VS open hand then knife VS knife.

  • @CatcherInTheFry The most difficult ability to learn for a real fight is to defend with bare hands against somebody who has a practical weapon and some ability to use it. This is from martial arts instructors that I have met. Even if you are a black belt and facing a guy with a big knife, I think having a big knife as well would do some good. (insert smartass remark of carrying a gun)

  • how about the San MAI III?

  • That knife means business.

  • if this is a "backup" knife.... i wonder what kind of knife is the "main" lol

  • @driftworld86 This is the backup, and the "main" would be a tactical carbine, for example.

  • oh yeyah

  • great review dude... just bought an OSS :)

  • This is by far the best knife I ever owned.

  • Regarding the sheath, when it is fully locked in, it can be extracted fairly easily by pressing the thumb against the back-edge side of the sheath. Also, the sheath offers pretty diverse customization, and the handle-strap could come in handy if the user prefers to keep the handle looser, which could be a legitimate placement depending on the intended use and handle configuration. For anything less than a user moving around vigorously, this should be fine. The locked sheath is bomb-proof :P

  • All of the knife fighting information and training I know dictates that a hand guard should not be used as a defense against another knife - it's debatable whether any hand guard will consistently defend against a knife strike. Instead, the defender should employ a counter-strike to the attacker's hand, then redirect the knife and follow with a body strike. You're playing Russian roulette with your fingers if you try to defend yourself with anything less than a Bowie hand-guard, IMO.

  • $55.00 for this knife in AUS8a steel on amazon.

  • I know I like the Gerber knives, but after this review, I think it worth getting. Just hearing it's your top pick for the service personnel in the military that's good enough for me. Thank ya.

  • im someone who practices knife fighting and i want a cold steel knife and i want to know how the revers grip is with this knife. i am also debating along with this knife the srk and the recon tanto i would use the reverse grip a lot and i want to see it it works with this knife. i would also use the knife for outdoor use and at some point i would get all 3 but i dont have the time and money right now

  • What are your thoughts on the OSI pou? Could it flex into a Ka-Bar competitor?

  • Hey Nut I just want to know if this would be a good knife out on the trail were I might run into a few cougars and who knows what else. I'm planning to hike the hole Appalachian trail and will need a knife that could protect me if needed.

    Thanks

  • Have any of you seen the video of the OSI in AUS 8 being snapped. I was wondering if anyone else has hurd about the AUS 8 not bending like they show in those tests? I like my OSI but I am thinking about springing for a San Mai III blade. And what does that say on the left hand?

  • @Hobbes0331 I was about to ask if the San Mai was worth investing in. I really like the OSI and OSS type of knife, but paying more for a blade... I'd like to hear from people who've tested the difference.

  • Have any of you seen the video of the OSI in AUS 8 being snapped. I was wondering if anyone else has hurd about the AUS 8 not bending like they show in those tests? I like my OSI but I am thinking about springing for a San Mai III blade.

  • great vid. do you have any experience with the cold steel boar hunter? im thinking of ordering one and wanted to know if it is worth the cash

  • @alexdaman8 Just found this comment, sorry the answer is so late. TNP = The Nutnfancy Project. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy Hey veri, I have one more question for nutn can you please ask him what he uses to oil his knives? Thanks!

  • @deathfromabove555 He uses Rem oil. -- Veri

  • Yea great on self defence but i think Steel tiger would be maybe even better.

  • @Alyxcz Only problem with the Steel tiger, is you cant stab, and stabbing is a very important ability for fighting with knives, especially if you want lethal wounds.

  • @Kylef7735 Still it is a big knife and i think i would be realy afraid of using it every hit can kill and you can end in prison with karambit i think u can control it better.

  • @Alyxcz Assault and murder are treated basically the same now a days.

  • have you ever been in a combat situation?

  • @nutnfancy Hey, nutn you had a type in your description. You said "More importantly it won't kill you load out." Change that 'you' to your.

  • @45calibermedic Good eye, thanks medic! -- Veri

  • The new ones now are made of vg10 san mai steel. If you see cold steels video you see a man get attacked by a buffalo and he kills the buffalo in an african hunt after he got shot with a gun ofcourse but still thats crazy.

  • @goatkiller68 it is vg-1, not vg-10.

  • wat do you use to sharpen your knives? jw i use cheap sharpeners but they work good

  • hey i wanted to let you know because of this review a 9 MONTH JURNEY IN KNIFE RESEARCH has satisfied me i will be buying this kniife in aus 8 for 60 bucks and found the kobun for twenty bucks love cold steel thanks hooah

  • @lndrymtthw Hmmm you probably did shut me up, i ment for Utility purposes but it can still do pretty decent as a fighting knife plus it has a pommel, nd the back clip can be sharpened if necessary. The only other reason why i think it is more expenseive is because of the Retention system, but it isn't for lefties. It just came out this year to the Cold Steel OSS's about 5 year now? Gerber might improve it and make it better steels but for now it is just a baby compared to the cold steel OSS.

  • Can you think about doing a Review on the Gerber LHR really it is better then the OSS except for the 420 Steel...

  • knife on knife... pfft... you pull a knife on me when i am disarmed... i reach for my backup gun!

  • on amazon for 50 bucks

  • now its made of AUS 8

  • have they changed the steel since '08, or did you just get it wrong? The Cold Steel website says they use AUS8A.

  • @Elvirth24 it is still AUS 8

  • @InsertGun I meant did they change it from 420 Cold Quench... I wasn't thinking. :P

  • Whats your opinion on using blades for home defense (where guns are illegal)?

  • Nice Knife But I Love My Cold Steel Recon Scout San Mai 3!

  • There is a better CQB knife the only downside is that it is 420HC steel by Gerber, it is called the Gerber LHR only if Gerber made it AUS8A or better -.-

  • @Tux3d0 I agree. That knife is sick!

  • Another good CQB knife is the Gerber LHR he should really do a tabletop review on it it is also pretty cool plus it has a pommel and a part is serrated and it is 420HC :D

  • Would you recommend the San Mai III or Aus 8A version?

  • @kayak17 For a fighter (which this one is) , san mai 3, cause it holds its edge better than the AUS8A, But for a woods craft blade (You would never use this one for that) i would say AUS8A

  • @Kylef7735 Thanks for the response.

  • @kayak17 You are welcome.

  • @kayak17 San Mai III it holds edge better and gets sharper...

  • an "army guy"?!? son if you had any respect for the the military you would call us soldiers

  • @LegacyPranks If you had any idea what you were talking about (especially military) you would know how dumb you sound.

  • How about for a survival knife in Aus 8. Would that do good?

  • @xxdandan123 I tried to use a SOG AUS-8 knife as a survival blade, batoned a small amount of wood with it, and it snapped clean in half :P

  • @xxdandan123 Yes it is good, Nutnfancys highest reccomended medium survival knife " THE cold steel SRK" is in AUS8.

  • Hey nutn, how much did you pay for this knife? i found it for $63 dollars! i think thats a good deal

  • @fallendude01 Nutn says he thinks he paid about $45 for this knife, but its gone up. He loves it. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy try cutlery shoppe they have it there for 49.99 it is the cheapest i have found

  • @nutnfancy Hey Veri, can you ask nutn if he recomends the 5.25 short version kabar.

    Thanks alot!

  • @deathfromabove555 Nutn says that he its a good knife, but he prefers the Cold Steel SRK or SOG Northwest Ranger over it. Hope that helps. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy Hey Nutn & Veri, I am happy to inform you that i just purchased the cold steel srk instead of the short kabar. Thanks for your suggestion nutn and thanks veri for responding to my comment. Happy 4th of july!

  • @deathfromabove555 Happy 4th to you too! -- Veri

  • @fallendude01 i paid 49$

  • @fallendude01 try cutlery shoppe it is 49.99 the cheapest i have found so far just ordered it for my collection cant weight

  • How do the guard and sub-hilt feel? Are they very firm, or have a bit of give?

  • @kingocarina They are steel.

  • Would the osi version work well for chopping limbs, battoning through medium sized logs and similar camp tasks while also being an effective last defense against animals? because that is what i am looking for, and the price is right. Get back to me when you can, thanks.

  • Hey Nutnfancy, what do you think of the San Mai 3 OSS ? I have one and it's the lightest large knife I own. Seems like it would be a great fighter but not something I would want to use for much else for fear of trashing that beautiful blade !

  • A note to the author: Kraton isn't exactly rubber, but a copolymer containing rubber and polystyrene. I happen to own a knife with a rubber handle, and the grip is somewhere between mediocre and awful, even plastic handles of an M7 bayonet provide better grip in my opinion (than rubber, not kraton). BTW: since you own this knife, I've got a question to ask you: doesn't the underhilt hamper the ability to change the knife's grip from standard 'sabre' grip to reverse grip?

  • I love my OSS knife. It is the best looking knife in the Cold Steel collection.

  • That is a wicked looking double edged blade O_o

  • mine broke in the house so I don't know how I feel about this knife...it fell on the floor.

  • does it come with the bead-blast finish?

  • Pulling the OSS (or OSI) out of the sheath isn't a one-handed job only because the knife is so damn big. You pretty much have to hold the other end of the sheath while pulling on the handle to ensure that the blade actually comes out smoothly. Other than that this is a wicked blade. It's almost like a miniature sword.

If I had to choose a backup tactical, I would go with something in the 5-6 inch range, just because they're somewhat easier to extract.

  • love the oss, my favorite fighting fixed knife, that long double edge is just perfect!

  • I greatly appreciate your reviews. I am a backpacker and just got a wood stove. This knife would more than handle any needs on the trail and breaking down wood for fires? That is all I want it for. But I am pretty sure that I will go with the OSI. Sound possible?

  • Hello NutNfancy!

please tell me your insight on the following: could the OSI, either in aus8 or sanmai III, serve as a camping knives for bushcraft and light batonning(I dunno, under 5inch logs)?

I'm looking for an stainless alternative for my TM in sk5, especially for hikes.

    tks

  • EasternGateGuardian,

I'm not an expert but here's my opinion: The OSI is going to be better than the OSS for camping/outdoors because the single-edged blade is much stronger than the double-edged blade. Of course, nothing beats a machete, but the OSI will get pretty close for small work. The San Mai III is expensive and impractical as a bush knife, but if you've go the money to spare, go for it. Otherwise, the AUS8a is probably the better steel.

  • Me, my bro, my friends all have this blade,, its fucking badass. I got mine from a friend already used, and i've had it for about 3 years now,, and its never been sharpened, and its still RAZOR SHARP. I love it very much,, I have the one with black blade which i like since its not shiny. I cannot stress how sharp this blade is,,, razor sharp heh. This is not a utility knife,, so hopefully people wont use it as such. Get the Recon Tanto if u need a good utility knife.

  • Are you sure its 420 and not 4116 krupp?

  • i would realy like to see a video on how you would strap a knife to the sholder of your lbe and what knives are good for that

  • I haven't heard good things about VG1 for hard use (the VG steels chip easily). I would go with AUS 8, or whatever other steel is offered for it, and save yourself $40 whileyou're at it.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

  • For a big guy "Lynn Thompson" can move really fast. I definitely would not want to get into a knife fight with him........

  • @TheChopper1000 lol me either, he probably picks fights just to practice his knife skills heh

  • @TheChopper1000 ive been wondering this for awhile: do you think Lynn Thompson has ever actually been in a dangerous situation?

  • Great reviews. I don't like the rubber guard either...If not for your review I wouldn't have known it. I'm going to spend the extra cash on the black bear classic. Thanks!

  • were can i get one

  • i dont like the finger guard at all, the one on the recon scout is better in my opinion

  • Hi

It is not a finger guard in that sense, it is made for you not to slip, and if used as intended in this video not in knife to knife combat, that is just fine. And an advantage in weight.

  • Oh, also, the more expensive one is NOT called the "Sub Hilt Fighter." The OSS is a sub-hilt fighter. The more expensive one is called the "Black Bear Classic."

  • @LaughingFlame Thanks...Seriously, the BBC is my favorite knife

  • Hey Veri, why doesn't Nutn ever reply himself?

  • how do you sharpen your knives to get such a razor edge??

  • He's got a couple of knife sharpening videos, but he also takes knives to John Fitzen (search "fitzenknives" here on YouTube) if he wants them profiled. He doesn't feel like he's the best knife sharpener and likes for John work his magic. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • @nutnfancy

no offense but i doubt that you are nutn's sister

    your probably nutn

  • I'm new to the knife world but however i do own a cold steel SRK i bought it in Iraq years ago and i really like your reviews . i was wondering if you could review the SOG tigershark please thank you

  • can you reveiw the OSI too?

  • It's a small possibility, But It definitely would not go through the hard plate.

  • You would not cut through a Hard plate

  • Cool story bro.

  • plz do a review on strider knives!

  • OOH-RAH

  • I carry this as a CQB backup weapon for that use only and I use a good folding knife for utility needs. Either a Zero Tolerance 3000 or Camillus Heat for utility use. But sometimes other blades like a SOG Trident.

  • Thank You

  • OSS or the NEW OSI, I am thinking of buying the OSS, but the OSI came out and the is a full flat grind, but the OSS is double edged, I don't know which one I should get, can anyone help me?

  • id get the oss because im getting one two oss looks thicker and double edge is great

  • wich is best a OSS or a ka-bar utility? for toughness, reliabillity, performance etc...

    KNIFE OF WAR, OUT

  • wow thats weird.i was going to ask the same question.

  • OSS

  • Ka-bar utility probably wont ever fail you unless u really really try, stays sharp, and in a case of a fight ka-bar is made to kill as well.

  • how tough is the tip of the blade?

do you think i should go with the srk if i want a tougher knive?

  • hm... Pakinstans seems to be next, unfortunately.

  • CQB? I think he means CQC...

  • Comment removed

  • Close Quarter Battle, Close Quarter Combat. Whatever.

  • Is it Sub zero quenched 4116 Krupp stainless steel? Or 420? Or are they both the same?

  • he SAID 420

  • Cold steel website says AUS8A.

  • Look at the description, they make both

  • It doesn't say that and they don't. He even says in the video that the newer ones are made in AUS8.

  • Anyone know if this knife has through-tang or full-tang construction?

It looks like a nice knife, but the website doesn't say whether they use a good tang or the 'rat-tail' tang found on cheaper knives.

  • True--just saving funds for anything is doable but takes time.

  • What a great line about a fourth of the way: "[A]nd you don't practice knife fighting all the time, which is basically ALL of us [...]." Well said, and good point.

  • it is a nice looking blade i admit. Yet a bit on the pricey side. I will stick to my Marine Corps bayonete. It is without a doubt the toughest blade a common man can buy. Also out of the box it can cut through a standard kevlar vest like butter. A knife is a poor wepon if you do not have the advantage of surprise.

  • I am trying to find a reliable site to purchase them from, however I see in their photos that the blade has "CHINA" stamped on it. I was wondering if yours has that same stamp, or if the box it came in had it...

  • If you need a knife to kill in combat, you are

pretty much up shit river. That means you are out of ammo. The knife we need in service is a good utility knife.

  • xsf-1, look it up, it's wonderful, pricey but SOOOOO worth it

  • Or you need to be a crazy motherfucker who has ammo and is in a hidden position, and sees an enemy scout, and wants to stab him instead of shooting him just for fun. Also there are a lot of instances where close quarters combat happens and you need a knife.

  • Good point--believing the myth of fighting is far easier than reality. In real combat, you WANT any advantage, fairness be damned. The other guy may have a gun if you only have a knife, and you got it--you are screwed indeed. I recall reading online not long ago from either someone in the military or government that he did not "want to see an American fight a fair war ever," meaning range is most important. It's easy to forget this and get caught up in mythology of blade engagements.

  • i like to keep the webbing on and i attach it to my belt or to some tactical webbing, and simply pull it out,yet keep the strap on so its still on. All i do is unsnap the strap holding it and its easy pulling out.

  • i have one, but i have the version with the black blade with only a shiny end of the blades. Its badass, whenever i show it off i shave some hair on my arm to show its razor sharp touch. VERY SHARP! very durable and will never dull/break any cold steel is worth it.

  • I am waiting on an OSS in the mail for whats left of hunting season. Walking out of the woods at night and possibly having some fox cover scent on me in the dark and all i gots my bow and arrow in the dark. I desided to go a united cutlery bowie, but i got the OSS on a christmas scale. my field dressing knife is a cold steel bowie spike.

  • i have gotan oss but i really want masters of defense CQD MKV ATAC

  • How well the edge wore out as in how fast it wore out or how well it stood up to punishment? Sorry, it was a little confusing, great video though.

  • Great videos. I was looking at this knife for my brother who's in the Army. Your review convinced me this would be a great gift for his graduation.

  • The Tek Lok comes with flush mount screws. I used two on one side then I zip tied it on the other with small black zip ties.

  • What do you think of the cold steel kukri, your vids are great

  • Good for hacking brush and/or bad guys. Used with great effect along those lines in WWII by our Allies.

  • are you doing 23 degrees on each side, or total?

  • wat does LBE stand for?

  • Load Bearing Equipment. The term for your belt, vest, canteens, mag pouches, sidearm and holster, etc. that you wear in the military.

  • What does LBE stand for?

  • Load Bearing Equipment ie the nylon harness assembly or vests used to carry combat loads.

  • But what do u think abut BLACK BEAR CLASSIC ??
