I'm trying to write traditional, melodic punk rock and I've thought alot about song structure. A lot of songs have an untraditional chorus and it still works. it's awesome.
(I'm a signed song-writer.) INTRO - 1st VERSE - CHORUS - 2nd VERSE- CHORUS- MIDDLE 8th - 3rd VERSE - CHORUS- OUTRO! "Bridges and pre-choruses where necessary, usually a juicy instrumental before, during, or after the middle 8th, and of course never forget the golden rule and that is that "any rule of song-structure can be broken AS LONG AS THE SONG WORKS!!!"
@TEDOVSKY I should add that you don't neccesarily have to think about these things ahead of time or as you write the song. But at some point you should examine your song and figure those things out.

@ratsout09 I've written & recorded 109 songs to be exact, and I started about 6 years ago when I was 13, and getting enough exposure to the point where your song becomes famous has little to do with the "songs quality" as you should be able to tell by radio rotations. And I was just being honest, you should know how to structure music just from listening to it, I have many people coming to me wanting to record; if they don't know the fundamentals of writing, they're wasting my time. Truth hurts.

Yeah ok well my ideas WAY different to that!!! I write poetry alot about what I dream...yeah sure it's all mushy and happy with a bit of sad in it...I just get my guitar play random chords that sound good and I sing the poem into it...it's easier when your listening to a tune to sing to it...
putting a blood thirsty solo after the bridge makes the song even more wonderful! That's what I do at least.... and it always sound fanatstic :) Cheers ;)

@mynameisntlucka Stop to worry about!! you know "Twist and Shout" Beatles's song is a copy for the Mexican song "La Bamba" ? check it out and you'll see is the same song!! Start with what you have, i think you learn guitar with your favourites bands, so, with the time you will develope your own sound, is only a matter of time, just change a few notes and the tempo and you will get a brand new tune!
@mynameisntlucka Okay, I may not help u out with ur prob but i can give u a lil advice.. which really works for me, I just create the melody first (common guitar chords) like D,A,G,A and, G,Em,C,D then i make my own lyrics which i think that fits the melody from those chords. I've had lots of trials before i get to finalize it.

You should have also mentioned that you can play the chores three times... playing the chores right before the first verse.. I have noticed that some songs do that.
this achually the honest meaningful real way. dont say just what people want to hear. say what you believe and your message and how you will either enlighten or give entertainment to yourself and others in your way. basically do what ever the fuck you want.

@derob7 wonderful just be sure to make it your entire career then record a better version wasting all of the night when you could've recorded more songs better songs then present it to me at a specific date at the studio then i'll let you record it here but be sure to make sure the guitar player in your bad yaknow the only one wiith talent other than you should be completly excluded from it except for 2 times to record his part but not even get to record the bass...

Then they can be friends still and while the keyboardist is still "friends" with the drummer there is always this undercurrent of bitterness and irritation towards each other that seems incurable because of the drummers smug disposition and his perceived arrogance from me
This is my favorite song structure, actually, although I usually use more verses (or perhaps split them in two - semantics, I guess) and sometimes add a pre-chorus. I like this structure: Verse - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge or solo - chorus - (chorus). It all depends on the genre, of course. This works well for rock and country. Thanks for sharing!

The thing is I want to sing about real scenarios, and major events in the world, like people's suffering and their struggles and dilemnas, and not about 'la la' and 'holding hands'.
it's simple to make a song.. first, add an intro.. then a verse>Pre(instrumental or lyrical)>Chorus>Post chorus(instrumental or lyrical)>verse>chorus> bridge>chorus>outro.
there's no difference.. music is universal, and no matter what you do, it will sound great if you have passion in writing it..^_^

nice try on a how2 write a song, but writing a song is something you have to learn by yourself :P
you get inspired by an already existing artist (optional), you pick up your guitar/piano/whatever and you start combining notes!
that's how you do it, you cant learn it from a book or a lesson, if you don't know how to do it: go listen music and get inspired!

This is my favorite song structure, actually, although I usually use more verses (or perhaps split them in two - semantics, I guess) and sometimes add a pre-chorus. I like this structure: Verse - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge or solo - chorus - (chorus). It all depends on the genre, of course. This works well for rock and country. Thanks for sharing!

The thing is I want to sing about real scenarios, and major events in the world, like people's suffering and their struggles and dilemnas, and not about 'la la' and 'holding hands'.

it's simple to make a song.. first, add an intro.. then a verse>Pre(instrumental or lyrical)>Chorus>Post chorus(instrumental or lyrical)>verse>chorus> bridge>chorus>outro.
there's no difference.. music is universal, and no matter what you do, it will sound great if you have passion in writing it..^_^
