  • Eric Carmen brought me here!

  • I have heard at least 30 renditions of this piece by all the great composers and orchestras...and yet I always come back to this one Vladamir Ashkenanzy and the Concertbouw, so balanced, tempo is perfect, the clarinet and strings and wind are so detailed. it makes me feel like I'm flying in the clouds. This Adagio is literally the peace which I started to take notice of classical music after ignoring it for 30 years!

  • I cannot understand why people who would dislike this piece unless it is the interpretation theyre unhappy with?. I think it is very good. Andre Previn's version is also very good. Vladimir Ashkenazy's always understood Rachmaninov very well especially in his performances of his piano concertos.

  • The phrasing is this is sublime....rips your heart from your body

  • I think this video has one of the best comment sections on YouTube.

  • WE have the Philadelphia under Eugene Ormandy. It's wonderful!

  • I hope the full symphony is played here, as it's often cut. Isn't this the best of the Romantic Symphonies?

  • @hhn1000 This recording is with no cuts, you'll be pleased to hear. :) (Although the exposition isn't repeated in the first movement, but that doesn't matter much.)

  • Looks like 2 people don't have a soul!!!

  • umm did you fiddle with the balance? I bought the box set and the sound wasnt as lush as this. It was of a higher quality though, probably due to youtubes restrictions.

  • One of the most beautiful melodies ever written. Thanks for posting this

  • Hermosa sinfonía. Se la dedico a mi hija ELISA MAXIMILIANE BARON OVALLE

  • Rachmaninov is a genius.

  • Rachmaninoff is a genius.Sheer genius.

  • i realli feel i am in love agn. Rachmaninov is a musical genius. i love his symphonies and piano concertos.

  • speechless

  • MOM! i hav a question! can i go kill 2 people? they dont hav a sence of life! well at least 145 are on my side!

  • i'm studying in the library and totally feel like crying, how can music be so incredibly wonderful?

  • 1:50-2:23 -- i love the way this part is written!

  • it is incomprehensible that there could be 2 dislikes

  • X nickmaestro

    I agree.... :)

  • -insert tear-

  • This music makes me want to fall in love again...

  • When I listen to this beautiful piece. It reminds me there is good left in the world, and helps me forget the bad. It makes my mind slip into another dimension and all my troubles vanish for a while, it makes me want to cry with emotion. It cleanses my heart and soul.

Maybe if people turned off the T.V and listened to more beautiful music like this, there might be a lot less angry and crazy people in the world.

  • i am...always have been and always will be Rachmaninoff's #1 fan. Thank you. Rosanne Lebitz Ford.

  • this is so good!

    I thought I did'nt like classical music...

  • absolutely beautiful , moving and uplifting

  • probably the best melody out there

  • Never Gonna Fall in Love Again...

  • This Adagio perfectly captures the feeling of loneliness of an exile, the yearning to return home. It is sad, yet hopeful.

  • Everyone, have a listen to Ireland National Symphony Orchestra's rendition of this work. They performed the part from 6:00 onwards just beautifully.

  • Rachmaninoff é o compositor que eu mais gosto, as obras dele tem movimento continuo, e grandiosa sem perder o bom gosto, Eu adoro as composições dele.

  • It's so wonderful that Rachmaninoff is finally getting the full credit as a great composer that he deserves. Tho' looked down upon by the "academic music" gang for decades, his star keeps rising while the works of Webern and Stockhausen are being stored in boxes which are continually moved closer and closer to the dustbin of history.

  • I Love this... it's perfect for dreaming! *-* And for writig as background.

Heard it the day before yesterday live in concert and it was so great.

I think it was played by the london philharmonics... not sure xD but sooooooo... i had and still have no words.

  • This music is so wonderful,it makes me fell so much passion!!!!!Im playing this with the Symphony Orquestra of New World School of the Arts(My high school) i cant deny it's extremely difficult but extremely beautiful too :)

btw the part that starts in minute 6:15 is my favourite

  • @CubanBassPlayer1 The Bass part to this symphony isn't difficult. I'm playing it now with my conservatoire

  • @wks1978 It isnt,exept for some parts on the 2nd movement n 1st too,but its mostly tricky

  • @CubanBassPlayer1 Mine too. It's unbridled, ethereal passion.

  • This music is so wonderful,it makes me fell so much passion!!!!!Im playing this with the Symphony Orquestra of New World School of the Arts(My high school) i cant deny it's extremely difficult but extremely beautiful too :)

  • I have spent countless evenings listening to this wonderful recording just before going to sleep. Rachmaninof must have been an amazing spirit.

  • I think that this recording are one of the best of Rachmaninoff's Symphony 2. This orchestra are very expressive in the interpretation. Thanks for Publishing

  • Moves me to tears...

  • I saw this played by the New York Philharmonic at the Gerald R. Ford amphitheater up in Vail Colorado. Never before then Had I heard a symphony play with such emotion and perfection. You could tell that they really enjoyed being in Vail for another year because it was showing in their performances. This was the perfect piece for them to show off their orchestra. very few in the world can take a piece as difficult as this and add emotion. Classical music is just so awesome

  • This is THE song of aching love, longing, and deep romantic loneliness, whenever, and wherever it is felt.

  • This is what love at first sight sounds like.

  • @nickmaestro So true my friend, so true...

  • Comment removed

  • @nickmaestro This movement reminds me of my love every time I listen to it...

  • @nickmaestro That first sight is long.

  • @nickmaestro Love doesn't exist. It is a word made up by man to put reason on why people are held down by women because frankly one couldn't find anybody better...

  • The intensity of this movement is impressive!

  • Wow had no idea Ashkenazi conducted as well!

    This is a great version!

  • I love how the beginning of this movement is as beautiful and heart wrenching as the whole movement...no, the whole piece!

  • the section beginning at 6:00 was absolutely amazing. i've rarely heard a version where the brass section (french horns?) was so lively and powerful. i had chills in my spine! i've heard lots of really good versions of this, but ashkenazy's might just be my favorite now. thanks for uploading

  • yes thank u for the post ive been looking for a good vesion for a while now and this is the best so far

  • fantastic piece of music. And Askhenazy´s tempis are just perfect...Previn seems to be a little too slow to my taste.

  • Simply magnificent. Really enjoyed this recording w/Ashkenazy. Many thanks for the video -- great job with the pictures too LSaez!

  • so beautiful

  • the opening notes sound like they were used in a standard song, those frank sinatra/nat king cole/perry como eras. i swear i heard those notes in a standard song before.

  • Never gonna fall in love again by Eric Carmen :) He used this in that song :)

  • oh yeah! it's that song! thanks!

  • @Stravinsky91 yes, and all by myself was taken off of rachmaninoff's second piano concerto.

  • @zilam98 They use to play it at the Academy Awards. Look at the video when James Cameron won his Oscar for Titanic.

  • hmmm ok. thanks.

  • @zilam98 Strangely enough for a classical musician to say, I'd love to have heard Nat King Cole sing this (but of course credit Rachmaninov for the composition!) Great music is and always will be great music. The 1976 version (uncredited) with Eric Carmen is execrable - I had to listen to the real version here with Ashkenazy conducting the Concertgebouw in order to cleanse myself.

  • Someone should figure skate to it. Gorgeous piece of music.

  • I know superlatives are handed out all over the internet and here on youtube, but this version of the symphony no.2 by Rachmaninov is the best recorded version I've ever heard. I own it and listen to it frequently and have compared it with others. The Concert Orchestra of Amsterdam along with Ashkenazy interpretation is flawless. Others have the tempo lagging and retard in the wrong places. I think this is partly due to the difficulty of the piece. Thank you very much for posting.

  • @jisiri

    About the tempi

Is there no version played by Rachmaniboff Himself on disk ?

He would have been a fantastic Jazz player

    see my channel !

  • @jisiri I agree, I have heard atleast 10 different renditions of this piece by all the top conductors and orchestra's but I always come back to this peformance by Ashkenazy and the Concertgbeouw, the Dynamic range, pace, Impact, melody is just sublime.I just love the up's and downs of this song, it like they take you on a ride you never want to stop. I used to hate classical music, could not stand it, would fall aslep until somehow I heard this song! Thanks Rachmaninov and Vladamir.

  • @jisiri this is ONE of the best but not the BEST.. The best recording of this symphony is the first complete recording ( 4 movements ) made by London Symphony and Andre Previn in 1973 for EMI. Fİnd it please and listen to it then u ll understand what I am talking about my fried =))
