British use centrifugal compressor which make the engine look short and fat. this increase drag which means single engine mounted internally is the logical solution. Germany use axial compressor, which make the engine look's long and thin and thus less drag.
@OPE08 yes, but there's severe limitation on jet engine technology during the 40s and 50s. The compressor was very inefficient, so it need straight intake to the compressor face. Even a slight curve in the intake tunnel will disturb airflow and reduce performance. today's compressor are so efficient, a slight air disturbance will only cause some insignificant perfromance loss. but in WW2, that little performance lost was enourmous by comparison.
