I think people are often fixated on being 100% safe - but guess what, you're not 100% safe crossing the road or taking a shower in your own home. I think the mature thing to do is research the risks and make intelligent, informed judgements on what risks you're willing to take. My understanding is, YES you can catch nasty STDs from unprotected oral sex, subject to various conditions - BUT in general the risk is lower than unprotected vaginal sex.

Actually you can be 100% safe with unprotected sex. If you and your girlfriend don't have an std, after having sex there is a 100% chance you still won't have an std. That's because std's are PASSED through sex, not CREATED. So whether you have oral, anal or vaginal sex you will not get an std. Of course you can still get pregnant with vaginal sex.

another good point to bring up--with the bacterial STIs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc), you can get infected in more than one place (mouth/throat, genitals, wherever) if you don't use condoms. so no, condoms aren't redundant after unprotected oral for disease transmission, either. seriously, always wrap it up, and get yourself tested often!
