@hisham1619 No. Canada has had 145 fatal accidents since 1945 which puts them in 5th. The USA is number one with 646 fatal accidents, followed by; Russia, Colombia and Brazil.
The right scientific approach is focusing on the falsification principle. Thumbs up!
Instead of focusing on possible traces of a bomb they should be trying to disprove the theory: If it was a bomb there would be traces of explosives and there would be parts on the ground blown off by the explosion before the plane started hitting the trees.
40.35 a board member: its impossible that ice could have been a factor. I know that it has been cut out - but nothing can save his untrue statement.
@MrTheEvilgerman Had the same thought - but I feel bad about making jokes with people who died in a tragic accident like this - Maybe you will someday grow to a point in life where you will do the same and leave the comment out.
How arrogant is that man speaking at 40:25. "It's impossible that ice would have been a factor". Nonsense! - Ice had long been recognised even then as representing a grave danger to aircraft. As soon as this programme mentioned that this plane didn't have its wings de-iced before taking off I strongly suspected that this was going to be at least one of the major reasons why it crashed.
So, let's take it from the top... the voice recorder didn't work properly... the official investigators didn't even check the fusalage of the plane... and weird luggages were found. If you believe in coincidence it truly was an accident due to ice and weight... I don't believe in coincidence though. It was either due to the fact of weaponry on board exploding, or terrorist attack.
If I think about the simplest explanation, it's ice. We know that it was much heavier than expected and it must have had at least a little bit of ice. To say that there was ALSO a bomb sounds like a stretch. Anyway, why would it explode at this time in the journey? Maybe if the bomb had just been put onboard, but how? And even then, why would it happen during takeoff of all times?
Especially sad ending because Dryden didn't communicate the safety message, either. That's covered in another ACI.
@Elemarth IF it were a bomb then it could be a mercury contact which is designed to explode when the mercury completes the circuit, usually but not always at a gradient. However a bomb wold literally blast it out of the sky and not reduce airspeed.
Those large crates may have contained other kit or weapons, but these would have been unarmed and discharged prior to flight (military regulations).
I think it was caused by the combination of ice on the wings and an incorrect estimation of the planes weight by the pilots (which was influenced by poor weight estimation directives). I think the theory of the crash being caused by a bomb is highly unlikely. For one thing it would be an incredible coincidence for a bomb that has been on board for hours to go off at exactly the same time that ice would have caused the same problem. Also the ice theory was later found to have validity (sadly).
As a precautionary measure, all air crafts should be made to undergo deicing procedure in winter conditions irrespective of actual ice formation or not. Prevention is always better than cure.
Increased weight of army personnel as against normal males, coupled with increased weight of gifts purchased by atleast 75-100 army personnel and layer of ice is the cause of crash in my view. The crash in 1989 also supports the primary investigators theory. I wonder what the pilots where trying to do by keeping the nose up. SOP is to keep the nose down in order to gain speed and lift.
When the pilots are doing their checks on weights one of the pilots says "Passengers and Cargo unchanged". Ummmm no, cargo would have been increased. How much did all the gifts and stuff the soldiers bought in the gift shop while they were waiting inside during refuelling weigh? We'll never know. But no doubt in my mind, weight was one of the major causes of this crash. Ice being the other cause. The plane was simply overweight.
@kaaskopje1988 Nope, cause those weights were originally calculated when the flight left it's first port. It then left a second port, but no mention of passengers getting off the plane, then it left it's last port, after the passengers had been inside purchasing gifts and the pilots in their pre flight checklist said "Passengers and Cargo unchanged" when this is inaccurate as the majority of the passengers had bought gifts and stuff at the gift shop.
@merlinpug As the voice recorder wasn't recovered, I guess the dialog between pilots You are refferring to is all made up by the makers of this TV programme.
@tanel22 Exactly. ..How insulting to the captain (flight instructor) to suggest him saying "air speed...pull up" And why did the writers omit the "stick shaker" and stall warnings which the DC8 is configured to do? This show doesnt do Justice for anyone interested in"reality"
is that other investigator stupid? how could ice be "impossible" to factor into the crash

It was stated in the video that no explosive residue was found. How could there be a terrorist bomb if there was no explosive byproduct found?

Interesting map at 27:48 - Germany still divided but Ukraine, Lithuania and other Post-Soviet countries already independent.

@draftube pilots never retract their lamding gear until positive rate of climb has been established. one of the rules of aviation.
