This guy was simply not paying attention and should not have been at that area walking from half to a whole pit box over from the car he was approaching. If he stayed along the pit wall while walking towards the car, he would have been fine.

Most people are being very sexist here and aren't thinking logically. The guy who was hit was standing behind another guy and another car. Race drivers sit very low in these cars, and the ride isn't smooth either. Think what you want, but the ride is very bumpy. Even at relatively low speeds in the pitlane. Therefore, visibility is seriously restricted. Also from that distance, by the time she did spot him she had no time to slow down.

It is far more the crew members fault than hers. He would have heard a loud horn everytime a car enters pitlane so he should have looked to see that Danica was coming and been aware that he was standing in the approach to her pit. He has far more ability to see wwhat's around than she does sitting in the car. And the drivers need to come in quick to practice making the pit stops. Remember in the race she'll have to stop with mechanics already in position to work on the car.

From where she was sitting, Danica would have had a hard time seeing the crew member as he was standing behind another mechanic, let alone a camera that was well behind the pit wall. She was coming in relatively quickly because the drivers are always taking the opportunity to practice their pit entry. It keeps them sharp for when they have to do it in the race and coming into the pit box slowly could cost them a position.
