  • Eat your heart out, Mike Portnoy, this is drumming, this really rocks!!!

  • oh yea

  • @andrewcates87 It's because he is the most musical drummer there is! He can play the easiest things and still make them sound like the greatest chops in the world! He is truly "playing" drums, he is not bashing them as fast as he can but he is playing them as the instruments they are. That is what makes him the best!

  • @FunnyLittleWord

    true that.. well said!

  • One of the best drummer's my music of choice is metal but this tops it all this is what I've set myself to play one day

  • the point is, this is music. Those Minnemans are sport.

  • 16 people hit the wrong button in a blind, jealous fury

  • How is this guy known as the best? He uses the same tricks in every video. He's not the fastest. He's not the most coordinated. He doesn't drum in the most creatively drummed songs. I know his thing is supposed to be grooving, but his grooves--to be honest, they're not astoundingly impressive. They're impressive, yes. And he is good, yes. But the best? I call hype. Overrated. Great guy? Maybe. But best drummer? Speed: Buddy Rich. Coordination: Marco Minneman. Grooves: someone incredible.

  • @andrewcates87 Because he does it better than anyone else period. EAD, son.

  • So I guess the past 35 years of being utilized by the best in the business to play on their records becuase is due mainly to hype....got it.

  • Steve Gadd is Awesome. So is Michel Petrucciani (sp). I have to look him up. Great piano player. He has the chops. I don't give a shit how small he is. He has TALENT!

  • the master at work

  • Anthony lost a lot of weight. He looks better.

  • he's gonna shit his pants.

    Anyway, he's awesome!

  • I can only do like 1 or 2 fucking paradiddles, fuck my life

  • Does anyone know how Steve plays the triplets at around 1:25? Doesn't it go floor tom-snare-bass? I play them like high tom-floor tom-bass.

  • I love Gadd.

  • whats the name of the little piano player?

  • @SchwabenDrummer Michel Petrucciani

  • @SchwabenDrummer Michel Petrucciani

  • i don't like how high he's got that hi tom tuned. just my 2 cents.

  • He kinda looks like dr house

  • he LOVES using paradiddles and paradiddle-diddles. and also, on a competitive scale, you would want to utilize proper technique, or else you wouldn't get anywhere. He has very good technique in his hands, except his left hand is a tad loose. Besides that, hes slouching. But he's old, so you gotta give him some credit ;)

  • Love his style of drumming

  • ENJOY! :D 100 Most Skilled Drummer (Live Videos) - /watch?v=9aiY9lrIklM

  • Steve has always been one of my favorite drummers. He has chops, but he also has a laid-back, groovy style that just sounds GOOD. Other folks have more technical skills, but when it comes to latin, groove or swing, I dont think anyone sounds "better."

Basically, take Dave Weckl, remove 90% of the ego, add 10 years or age and a large dose of THC, and you have Steve :)

  • paradiddle master

  • @buguibongiovi ha! i was just gonna say that. he IS the king of paradiddle grooves and fills!

  • in GaDD we trust !

  • and of course....there is a load of people who watch this and say ''Travis Barker is better! This guy is old and boring'' but they don't know that he and dave wekle are the real masters

  • he still has a lot of energy for a older drummer

  • oh my Gadd..

  • dr. house in drums

  • Was that "Take The A Train"?

  • @noconfig Yes.

  • Gadd is sooo smoooooth. Just delicious.

  • I want those pair of hats

  • @TheGarnerBand, yes you can mess up with drums. Those who lack a sense of rhythm and try to play(I know a few underclassmen and one junior in my high school percussion class), it is just awful. I do have to applaud Steve though, those quad fills were incredible. Much much MUCH better than I could do, since I lack the coordination to play a drum set well, even though I kick ass at concert and marching percussion. Quick survey: best rudiment, double-paradiddle, yes or no?

  • Compared to alot of other drummers, this guy grooves in his solos with great feel. And that's the way we like it!

  • grooooooove!!! :D

  • My new favourite drummer.

  • musical

  • When you see some of his licks laid out on paper with the sticking patterns, you see why he is the master. His rudiments are insane.

  • Take the A drum

  • oh my GADD, you better GADD yourself a new face because it GADD melted

  • Gadd is much better at playing to music then soloing. He's not near the technician that guys like Weckl, Mayer or Jimbo are, but he always has a great feel.

  • Wow Wow Wow Wow danke für das Feeling

  • superb technique,great drummer

  • Why can't nobody still groove-hard while they solo like Steve Gadd?

Todays drum solos are all about

speed-crossovers and not about the music...

I wonder, who's going to carry the torch after the most influential musician-drummer alive yields???

  • one of the best dummers in the world in my opinion !

  • he plays so quietly

  • Wow... He is a god. or should i say Gadd!

  • Wow... He is a god.

  • My new favorite pianist

  • Plays with so much feel! Gadd is the true master of feel, the Yoda of drumming.

  • Now I know why people say matt cameron from pearl jam sounds like steve gadd.

  • Damn, he's got PASSION

  • ive been in his house :)

  • i have black steve gadd sticks!!

  • Gadd is the master of playing with "feel".

  • god...he's just the groove master!love his playing

  • Steve is one of those rare guys that has a truly unique, a signature sound, which everybody afterwards copies. And I'm saying this as someone who's not necessarily a fan of his style (yet Gaddisms keep creeping into my own playing). That's just personal taste. But only an idiot wouldn't recognize this guy for the groundbreaker that he is. G.roove master indeed

  • is he always stoned or what? I'm seriously wondering this? lol Really, someone reply lol

  • @luke1the3duke who?

  • What a gem ! Michel was such a monster- rip Michel!!

and of course Gadd! Gadd is the drummer's drummer- he did to drumming what Jaco did to bass playing- everyone wants to be able to groove like Gadd!

check out this drum solo by the author of

"The Book of Funk- grooves for snare, bass and hi hat"

    search:'"Drum Solo in 3 Movements"

  • If you ask me, Steve Gadd may be a modern Elvin Jones.

  • well controled choas

  • lads this man is unbelievable id do anything just to see him play live or talk to him his teqnique is class and his sticks i have them dare unreal :D

  • I didn't know Steve Gadd played with Michel Petrucciani...cool. Great Solo, such groove and style, crazy.

(I found Dave Weckl's signature sticks not very good, great player though)

  • Steve Gadd is the most skilled drummer ever raw talent and technical skill alll day

  • I like the drumers ho doesn't need 20 cymbals.

  • Gadd rocks so good groove all day by far best drummer to ever live

  • The guy just has an amazing style and it's obvious that his technique is merely a tool to facilitate his musical ideas. It doesn't end up dictating what he plays like it does with so many drummers (and other musicians).

  • I love Steve Gadd's drumming!

  • unreal

  • Is there a benefit to playing traditional over fist? and what size sticks is Gadd using?

  • i dont know what to say but one STEVE GADD is the best drummer in the world i mean it the best solos he has

  • i just got his signature sticks, they are amazing!!!

  • same

  • @ixOr1onxi

I use almost nothing else than Steve Gadd Singnature sticks. ok sometimes i use Dave Weckl sticks.

  • betcha hes better then the sticks

  • jazz drumming is fucking insane

  • gotta say, he is one of my fav drummers, but this aint jazz drumming really

  • @Bosphorus92 man jazz is about freedom, you can play anything if the groove is right, if you decided you wanted to totally change the groove because it fitted your solo, then yeah do it man, as long as what you feel is being felt by the people your trying to play to, anything is on

  • Excellent as always from such a groove master. The time on his watch says 548, in case you were wondering

  • tutto il repertorio! Grande Stefano

  • WOW!

Usually Gadd is more mellow and scientific but in this video he had so much more energy and you can tell that he was having a great time.

  • 1:50 is amazing

  • take the A train

  • Why is the little guy keeps closing his piano. LIke it's "We are close" " come back later"

  • jajajajaja

  • he did it once o.O

  • Quel groove ! Très bon batteur ...

  • what a musical beautiful solo

I'm thinking esepcially from 0:18 to 0:28 but it's all good

  • freakin paradiddle master

  • amazing solo - lmfao at 1:32 :D

  • WOW.... i have no words... AMAZING!!

  • Take the A train LoL michael petrucciani the best

  • thats a very bright , live sound for Steve Gadd ... usually his sound is much warmer and rounder .

  • He is such a pocket player!

  • whats the name of this song????

ive been searching for it for a long time. that piano player...

    PLEASE anyone?

  • The piano song is called: Take the A train.

Duke ellingtons version is the best

  • the piano player is michel petrucciani

  • buen solo grande steve...

  • at 0.41 guys wad is steve doing? with his left 1? a rapid roll at a minute volume? or is it just a double stroke roll

  • Buzz roll

  • Steve Gadd Amazing. Thank you Purple Melon for telling me about this clip. What a dude.

  • he is james tayler's drummer at the mo

  • Some people say Gadd doesn't have the same disciplined technique as some of the other big players, but I think its more a matter of him being so good that he manipulates the techniques to actually improve them for himself. I dunno if its really correct, but I heard that, especially wit his left hand, he plays further back on the stick for more power, but even though this would put the stick off balance, he has such amazing control with his fingers that he can still manipulate the stick perfectly

  • Technique is what you make of it. There is no 'correct' technique, only what works best for you.

It is always good to learn commonly used techniques, such as German and French grips, matched and trad, but ultimately it's your own decision.

  • Amen. I get sick of technique bashing proper drummers who use musical theory to make others feel inferior.

  • @colourfulwithaU not with drum corps

  • @colourfulwithaU yea i like what your saying, like, you cant really suck at drums. it is what you make it. you can suck at math and not get it right, but you cant be wrong at drums.

  • @colourfulwithaU As nice as that is to say, it seems that Traditional is the most versatile grip (in that when made good you can do a lot more with traditional), as for technique, making up a technique is fine but unless you want to destroy your wrist movement by 40 it's wise to practice the moeller technique as this prevents long term injury in the joints.

  • great :)

  • ooo i love the snare its a very cool sound its awesome

  • YESYEYEYSEYESYESYES!!

  • Gadd backwards is ddag. Dagnabbit...

What you're hearing is zest in motion. Imagine eating a Gorgonzola Chees Salad and drinking some wine while Steve is playing this song at a night club.

Then imagine your girlfriend getting all hot and bothered as Steve winks at her as he's rat-a-tatting away on the drums.

Imagine you getting angry and standing up then throwning your napkin down in anger and disgust and walking away,

as Steve leans into the microphone and cackles.

    Ha, ha!

  • fucking fairy

  • not gonna lie steve grooves are amazing but i just dont think his technique is that fresh, im more of a fan of guys like jojo weckl colaiuta because they use their technique to i guess improve a groove, make it more original

  • well, ofc guys like weckl and colaiuta are talented. but NONE of them got what Gadd has. I cant explain, but i think gadd has his own tecnique, to make "simple" things sound insane and complicated. this is not the best video of gadd. Theres some insanely good videos of gadd out there. and every single drummer in the world needs to listen to him, and learn.

  • @DrumSicknezz your the man people need to hear more Gadd its shitty hearing who people think is good and, they don't mention the master they say guys like Blake Richardson wtf has the drumming world come 2 we NEED MORE GADD!!!!

  • @DrumSicknezz Fuck yea man the world needs more Gadd enough of these shit metal drummer everyone thinks Blake Richardson is the best fucking joke man Gadd still keeps it real

  • @DrumSicknezz I agree. Gadd's technique is an insane technique

  • If you really are a fan of Jojo and Weckl, you will understand that technique is simply the guidance and manipulation of the stick movements in order to create music, which is exactly what Gadd is doing here.

  • Yes it's michel petrucciani!!

  • Check out rRick Lathem as well. Great stuff

  • you should buy gadd's sticks, their incredible. and their is no best drummer, everyone has a differant style that cant be compared. you should look up derek roddy, he's pretty good.

  • great point, there is no greatest, all have different talents that they bring to their sound

  • i use gadd sticks. there perfect in every way!

  • you're right ! His sticks are amazing. I bought some recently and i am totally satisfied!

  • there is no best drummer... but in MY OPINION, Gadd, along with Weckl, Chambers, Garibaldi, Hamilton, Moore, etc... go under my favorites, because i find them the most musical.

  • Thanks for the groove...

  • Shaolink... I am the "best drummer" and u need to change those 3 sixes to 7s

  • this is just my opinion, but i think virgil donati, terry bozzio, thomas lang, marco minnemann, and jon theodore are all technically more skilled than most and are probably likely contenders for the title of "best drummer." of course, no one can really be sure, but it's probably some kid practicing in his/her basement who will never be discovered by the world at large. depending on perspective, it could be basically anyone except travis barker. i know, the joke was in poor taste.

  • the key is not to be super skilled, is to be MUSICIAN, NOT AN SPORTER OF DRUMS

  • Groove master - Steve is so inside he is outside

A real thinking mans drummer -

  • This isn't the best drummer the world has seen, but he's better than Buddy, imo.

  • steve is great

  • yea oouuu yea whe i play and listen this kind of drum solos

feels like make love with my girl

with so so so so much love

  • Grandissimo ..

    w Steve Gadd...

  • I've always loved steve Gadd , people try to say that he is not the best, but its just the certain places he puts things that I love despite the fact that in many of his videos he repeats alot of the same tripelets, but he still deserves his respect, he was on everything in the 70's

  • The call and answer interplay between the the hands and feet from 1:38-1:45 is brilliant. Sweet stuff

  • amazing!

  • Steve Gadd knows what a drum solo is, not too loud and not too much

  • what wouldn't I do 2 have him as drumteacher!!!!

  • no matter how far into a solo he goes, he never stops grooving.

  • i would kill people to play like him

  • outstanding definately, along with Carter Beauford and a few others one of the top all timers.

  • ridiculous stick control

Gadd is by far top 5

  • whats this song called? i wanna see this whole performance.

  • Take the A train

look that up with steve gadd, should be one of the first ones.

  • I only caught the first few piano notes at the end of the video but it sounded like " take the A train "

  • It annoys me how they keep close-uping on his face! I want to see his hands

  • This is why Steve is GOD - his playing is SO beautiful. Man, it's so precise and clean. The drums sound really great in this clip.

  • the name of the pianis is Michel Petrucciani

  • What is the pianist's name?

  • That's one of the greatist piano players in the world.

BTW - remember they said to play drums relaxed? Steve is a workout - and amazing (especially for his time).

He's the Philly Joe Jones of this time.

And he beget Weckl - who's next?

  • vinnie colaiuta, ofcourse- then probably mike portnoy

  • STEVE GADD...the Groove Master. One of my favorite drummers...not my #1 favorite but he is in the top 3.

  • shit son wtf is up with the pianist?

  • Sometimes you just don't have to be tall to be a giant musician.

  • wasn't expecting the very small pianist

  • That's what she said.

  • the drumming was incredible...

but lmao at the tiny pianist

  • the "tiny pianist" as you so ignorantly put it had a serious medical condition that made him that way. Seriously what the hell is wrong with you? You think it's funny making fun of physically deformed people? FYI he was a legend.

  • correct he is a legend :)

  • Sounds exquisite

  • Sweet drums

  • Sick, that is pure sick this guy rules.

  • what is the song their playing called. i know it but i forgot the name.

  • i believe its "take the A train"

  • I don't think so, it sounds very similar though.

  • its take the A train

  • is it just me or does it look like hes having and orgasm

  • well, playing drums releases lots of dopamine as does having an orgasim so in a way he is.

  • haha just another reason why i love to drum

  • the best solo is the prepared one :) but its really nice.

  • gotta love the 'open' sound of the drums, so different from the sound Steve is famous for.

  • AHHHHHHHH ... Y do the camera men always close up on drummers faces .... WE WANT TO SEE HIS HANDS .. and where he is hitting.

    it really irritates me

AMAZING solo! .. just wish i could see what he was doing

  • Best sounding kit I have heard in a long time.

  • Hahaha, In every video I see of Steve Gadd, someone in the audience always cheers when he starts grooving on his cowbell. Gotta love that cowbell!
