Julie had bronchitis when she recorded this, so I consider her performance with its slightly dull edged pitch in places the result. I prefer the first hi-fi recording for her singing. And yet, even with bronchitis [you can hear her sniffing at one point in one song] there's nobody like her. There's never been a greater song for a great singer on Broadway than this one.
I admit I love Audrey Hepburn dearly. Having said that, though, there's no question that Julie Andrews got screwed out of the film version of My Fair Lady. I feel for her over that one.
i love julie and audrey. we get the best of both worlds in 1964. audrey in a picture that won 8 academy awards, and julie as the incomparable mary poppins taking 5 academy awards - including best actress for julie.
Have you ever heard a cockney singing...they DON'T sing witha 'Cockney' accent...they usualy soften or 'posh' it up...as we all do when we sing...Me? I'm Scottish and NEVER sing with a Scots accent unless I'm taking the piss!
@jimdivax I suppose you're right! And also the fact that they were dealing with an american audience for starters, wouldn't make it possibly to "be" totally cockney...
@jimdivax It's a musical. Singing is the equivalent of talking for them. Of course they're gonna sing in their speaking accent. The whole story is about accents, it wouldn't make much sense if they didn't exaggerate it a bit.
Julie has said that while playing this role of Eliza she never stopped working on the character of Eliza for the years she played on Broadway and the West End! And she herself was never quite sure of the cockney accent either! Anyways its Amazing you wouldn't know from listening to this how much she at first doubted herself in this role! And well she is Julie Andrews and a Dame at that, how could you NOT love her :)
My favourite movie, play and read the book over and over again. and then see the movie again...and it just had to be with Julie Andrews as the actress and singer etc. She's great and love her talent for singing acting and dancing. She's even a comedian in her own way . I knew the words to all of the songs. Thanks for posting Catiaadao :)
@bigpudding8888 Julie Andrews herself, said that even with the accent/voice coaching and doing the play for nearly 2 and half years, she could never really get the cockney down to perfection... so we got to give her praise for the honesty and for, in one or another, making Eliza immortal :)
She played the role on the US stage; notwithstanding her own comments, actors on the US stage usually use a "Mockney" accent, because some British accents are difficult for Americans to follow, and Cockney is one of them. Actors with genuine Cockney accents (Michael Caine, for example) usually tone them down for roles in the US, or in British films intended for very wide release. Sometimes the same things happens when the British hear certain US accents, mostly Southern ones.
@rivkahchaya True; I've heard about that! But Julie has never really been able to do accents, she said so herself, many times, she also said she really had troubles with the "mockney" especially when singing Wouldn't It Ber Loverly. Actually she says that she could always get people laughing by trying to do a southern accent. :)
@catiaadao no matter what..julie sings and portray the character better than anyone..i think it was a huge mistake of jack warner to cast audrey instead of her...and also it was shame that they used other voice in singing...audrey did great though but the voice was not hers....
Am I hearing an angel singing here? Sooooooo loverly voice. I love the movie too with the so loverly face Audrey Hepburn. Such a loverly musical. Salamat.
It happens rather often that the character in a film is portrayed by a different person than the one in the musical. I think what made it worse is that Rex Harrison played opposite Julie Andrews in the musical and he did perform in the film. It must have been hard for Julie to watch someone else perform her role. I do love Audrey Hepburn, though, and I think she performed beautifully.
Julie Andrews' voice was very lovely. However, I really think that there was something about Audrey Hepburn had that she didn't possess as Eliza Doolittle. I love both actresses and they contributed so much to the film industry. In terms of vocal ability: Julie Andrews. will you all stop debating who's better between Julie and Audrey... it has been decided a long time ago and guess who've won the best actress for the Academy that year... aahhhhh what a sweet revenge hahahahaahhaha
@AlfieNoakesOhHo We'll have to agree to disagree! And I still say we can't compare, they're two very different ladies, which means their beauty is different and perceived in different wasys, but as Audrey once said "I think happy girls are the prettiest girls"... and she might have that right!
@AlfieNoakesOhHo in my opinion, Audrey is the most stunningly beautiful woman ever. But Julie is also very pretty, and has one of the most wonderful voices. I love them both.
I wish there would be a filmed version of one of the representation of my fair lady. I would love to see it! the rest of the story and all.... julie is such a talented and gorgeous woman. wonderful :)
Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the rest of my life whenever I watch My Fair Lady and hear Julia Robert's voice all I'll think of is The Sound of Music!!! ;(
She's so amazing. I don't care if some people think Audrey was better. Julie has got the real talent. Audrey's real voice wasn't even used in the movie. It was Marni Nixon, who also replaced Natalie Wood in West Side Story. It's sad how people like Marni and Julie are overlooked sometimes. At least Julie got her fame with other things, like Sound of Music, even though she wasn't Eliza in the movie.
Audrey is so much better for this role. She sings this song with the real "cheep" brit accent. Juile sounds like she is trying too hard to "cheepen" it up.
@blueaardvark1717 Ok, you're entitled to your opinion, even when you're wrong! I don't really think Audrey was any good with the accent, but hey, the movie was done, and it worked...so...
@rubenzilzer I might be wrong, but I think Audrey actually sung this song in the movie, and another one... I can't remember which one was the other, but I believe it was Just You Wait!
@jaeladarling2 I actually thought they've kept Audrey's version in the movie?? Maybe I saw it as an extra on the dvd and thought it was in the movie...
@catiaadao There are many sources that cite this tidbit. Audrey Hepburn's voice was not used for the movie, and this was in fact not an uncommon practice for movie-making in general.
@catiaadao Yeah it's definitely Marni Nixon in the movie, but yes Audrey sang it on the DVD extra, and I personally think Audrey is the best (at least for this song) cos her voice isn't perfect, it's raw and uinclean, just like Eliza!
I feel like Julie Andrew's voice is too nice and refined for this part. She's supposed to act as a woman who doesn't know how to speak or act like a lady.. but her voice sounds too pleasant here!
Sorry?? Audrey Hepburn was PERFECT for the part. I am a huge Audrey fan and the Rex Harrison even said himself "She was the best actress he'd even worked with" Now I'm not putting a downer on Julie Andrews because she's absolutely Fantastic, But don't put a downer on Audrey Hepburns performance because at the end of the day, she was better for it.
@Cinderaly001 You're entitled to your opinion! But I will have to disagree with you,Audrey was indeed a brilliant actress, and I didn't say she was bad in the role of Eliza, I just think she's wrong for it, and Julie would be way way better as Eliza, not only because she played the part on Broadway but also because Julie could actually sing! And about Rex Harrison, he said the very same thing about Julie, so I'm not taking him seriously...
@catiaadao :) Ok fair enough And you're entitled to yours butt....Audrey was Perfect for it... Just like Julie Andrews was perfect for Mary Poppins...Unfortunately Julie Andrews just dont cut it for me as Eliza..she will always be better as a Mary Poppins.
@Cinderaly001 But the point is, you feel that way without ever have seen Julie as Eliza. You should check out the available clips on youtube, she is also perfect for Eliza, she CREATED Eliza, in the same way she created Mary Poppins, in the same way Audrey created Holly Golightly and Sabrina; the point is, in my opinion, Audrey doesn't make a perfect Eliza, not in the same way Julie does... Shall we agree to disagree? :D
@Cinderaly001 Audrey was only better for the role, because she was already very famous by the time the movie came out, which meant more people went to the see the movie with Audrey, then they would with Julie... and, I don't see any point in debating this, you still feel the way you do and I still feel the way I do!! And both Audrey and Julie are pretty amazing!!
Im from ireland, but i love julie! does anyone know where I can either watch?or by my fair lady at? I really want to see it soo bad :( asap reply please :(
Speaking of lyricist craftmanship, I believe it was on the Dick Cavett show where Lerner said he was embarrassed by what he felt was a cliche in using the phrase "...While all at once my heart took flight" in "I Could Have Danced All Night."
This is a musical that resetted everything. 100 on the scale of 100.
Don't know what Shaw would have thought of the ending.
Actually, Julie was the producer's first choice for the film, but she was under contract with Disney for Mary Poppins, which is why Audrey Hepburn ended up with the film role. And, as good as her acting was, I totally agree and wish Andrews had been able to do the film.
@desertmaestro as far as I know, and having read Julie's autobiography, I don't think she was ever considered to be in the movie, she certainly was never asked. Both movies were more or less started at the same time, but by the time Julie was asked to star in Mary Poppins, I think Jack Warner had already picked Audrey to play Eliza in the movie, but I'm not sure! I'd love to see Julie playing this part, she has said more than once that she would love to "put it to rest" but now it's late...sadly
There are Hollywood rumours about a remake of the movie, this time the screenplay would be written by Emma Thompson, there were mentions of Keira Knightly and Carey Mulligan to play Eliza, but I think that the project eventually dropped, rightly so, no matter how much I didn't really like Audrey in it, there's no sense in a remake...one of these days they'll me making as remake of Gone With the Wind...
@desertmaestro Julie was asked to do Mary Poppins, when she was doing My fair lady on Broadway, but she waited to answer them until she knew that she would not get Eliza in the movie. She even thanked the director of MFL when she got an Oscar for her performances in Mary Poppins. She was to UN-known in the movie world at that time, so they chose Audrey, whom everyone knew. Watch bonus tracks on Mary Poppins anniversary DVD and you'll get the whole story from them=)
@ekstadropsen That is actually not true! Julie was asked to do Mary Poppins, when she was doing Camelot on Broadway, Walt Disney came to see the show and "fell in love" with Julie. Officially Julie was never asked to do My Fair Lady, although she wanted to do it, and so did the director Moss Hart, When she was asked to do Mary Poppins she waited to answer because she was pregnant but Disney said they would wait.
@ekstadropsen And actually it was when getting the Golden Globe for Mary Poppins, that Julie, jokingly thanked the man who made it all possible Jack Warner (who decided to hire Audrey instead of Julie).
@catiaadao Sorry, it's been some time since I saw the movie, so I don't remember all the details of the story that well. The point was, that they wanted Audrey, and not Julie, and that it had nothing to do with Mary Poppins.
@ekstadropsen I know what you meant, but being a Julie fan and knowing the story I thought I'd clear it up, and only Jack Warner wanted Audrey and not Julie, Rex Harrison wanted Julie, the actor playing Eliza's father wanted Julie, the director Moss Hart wanted Julie...but hey, if Julie had done My Fair Lady she probably wouldn't have done Mary Poppins, so I suppose everything happens for a reason....
Julie's version is definitely the best.. she's got the right accent, an awesome voice.. I would have been interested to hear Audrey Hepburn's but still Julie is the one who rocks :)
this is a great version. Marni Nixon sang the original because Audrey Hepburn didn't have the right voice which is crap because they could have just changed the key to suit Audrey but I think prefere this version. The main reason that they didn't cast Julie Andrews for the film is because they didn't think that she wasn't famous enough.
@rockandrollkid1000 Marni Nixon sang the original in the movie version, because the original of the originals is this one, as Julie created the role on Broadway! And you're right about one of the reasons why she wasn't cast for the movie! A funny story, when winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress for Mary Poppins, Julie thank the man who made it all possible...Jack Warner!! LOL
From what i understand, Julie andrews was passed up for the movie version that gave Audrey Hepburn a name, mainly because she was doing Mary Poppins for Walt disney.
I always wondered what would have happened if Julie didnt do mary poppins, how her career would have been so different. She is a wonderful singer and actress. I love you Julie!
i love the first picture of julie in this video haha it cracks me up. but yes i agree julie made a MUCH BETTER eliza than audrey but i can't complain cause julie won an oscar for mary poppins :)
@jspankin No, that's the movie! The original stage version with Julie is from 1957, if I'm not mistaken and ran for 2 years in NY and 18 months in England....
Oh, and for the people making comments about Mary Poppins. . . that I frankly don't get. She was wonderful in it, and it is a wonderful beloved story, and one she loved very much, and I frankly can't help but think some people are just being snooty about it with their comments.
I'm a big fan of Julie Andrews, but I have to honestly say I don't enjoy her very much in this role, for the simple reason that she is so elegant and so beautiful and has such a wonderful voice that even when she is performing as Eliza during the early parts of this musical you can't help but pick up on her elegant air and tone of voice. I suppose the best way to say it is that she is so elegant and wonderful I deon't think she does a good enough job hiding it early on. Just my opinion.
I'm glad Audrey did it. Julie was amazing on stage, but Audrey was amazing in the movie. I know that she didn't do her own vocals, but she was suppost to and was going to, but later the studio decided to use someone else. Audrey put 100% in her performance, and it shows. If Julie did it, then who would have done Marry Poppins? It all worked out perfectly!
@Tolstoy111 that's where you're wrong!! Mary Poppins is anything but buttoned down, or dreary, you obviously don't really know what you're talking about! Because if you did, you'd never dare to say that about Mary Poppins;) And yes, Julie should have done My Fair Lady, but then I can't picture anyone else being Mary Poppins,m because Julie is the greatest, and she also got an Oscar for it, that should tell you something! :)
@catiaadao In MP you can feel Andrews suppress her natural charm and effervescence. And she drops out of the film for such long stretches that it's virtually a supporting role. She was wasted in it.
@Tolstoy111 I see what you mean! I still don't think she was wasted on it! So let's agree to disagree on that! :) I do know, that Julie wanted to stick to the original Mary Poppins from PL Travers books, but Disney wasn't going for it at all, PL Travers disaproved of it in a really great fashion, she and Julie exchanged letters about the movie and the character, I do think had they "played" the"real" Mary, the movie would have much more to offer! But I still love it as it is!
@RenesmeeTheWerepire: Audrey Hepburn didn't do her own singing voice in the film, it was dubbed by Marni Nixon. It is said that she wouldn't have taken the role if she had known that she was not to be singing for herself. But I quite agree with you - Julie Andrews has a "loverly" voice!
@ElisabethSwannRULES Actually it wasn't!! Julie had nothing to do with the movie! some of the songs in the movie were sung by Audrey Hepburn herself, but most of the songs were dubbed by Marni Nixon.
This appeared in my Recommended For You column apparently by virtue of the fact that I had previously watched a video of the classic childrens' series Rainbow. I am somewhat bemused.
you are the best you are so so so so so so so so so so so so cool i love you miss julie from a little girl i hope am a good singer like you i love you so so so so so so so so so so much you are so pretty
How did it EVER occur to them to cast Audrey Hepburn for this role?? Just because supposedly Julie was not well known enough at the time?
Well I guess the filming could have interfered with Mary Poppins and Sound of Music and you can´t do everything. I get boiling time I see Hepburn on screen doing this, dubbed by Marni Nixon. Such a 1950´s 1960´s Hollywood attitude.
Great singing..she was Eliza Doolittle, the truest authentic Broadway Eliza. I wonder how she will feel about that awful Keira Knightley singing this for the film due to be releaed this year....there is only one Broadway Eliza - Julie Andrews
There are also small videos of televison appearences, I think you can see them online, just look for My Fair Lady on the Ed Sullivan Show... you'll get to see a staged version of Wouldn't It Be Loverly
I love Julie Andrews! She's been my idol ever since I heard her singing in The Sound of Music. I'm 14 now and I can't believe I missed her whenshe was on broadway! She's an amazing, amazing singer and really should have been in the movie! I've even got the old record of My Fair Lady and would give anything to see her perform on broadway...
omg! me to! i love her to!i loved her when i heard her when i was six, when i started singing, i was on youtube and typed in my fair lady and i heard her! i loved it sooo much! ever since i have been obsessed with her! you r lucky! u got the record of my fair lady? i dont' have that! i want a dvd or vhs movie of my fair lady with the original cast! (Julie Andrews rex harrison...) i would love to see her perform on broadway to! it would be a miracle if we could go back in time and see it! sweet!!
no she didn't! sadly. Audrey sung some of it and marni nixon took over! she sung half of Just you wait and as soon as it got to the part 'someday ill be famous...' marni nixon took over! that was really stupid! they chose marni instead of julie? that was dumb! sides, julie was 10000 times better for the part than Audrey. if the just took julie, then they wouldn't have to worry about getting a hold of marni to to half a song in i think.....most of the songs in the movie!
Well, there's a few good reasons why they didn't get Julie to sing... 1) she's way too good to just be the "ghost" voice, 2) Why would Julie accept singig the part when she wasn't even asked to play i as she should? 3) If Julie had made My Fair Lady she wouldn't have done Mary Poppins, and honestly I can't imagine another person being Mary Poppins! Julie is Mary Poppins!
And Audrey wasn't that bad, she's a great actress, ans she did well, and they didn't get Julie mostly because of money issues, they spent too much on the play rights, to afford a flop, Audrey Hepburn meant success and that's what they had!
yes i do agree. she isn't that bad she actually is a good actress! btw, i LOVE your pic! how do you get them? anyways, so, they (the director ect.) didn't want a flop?!?!?! and let me guess, that flop is julie? if it is, god! they don't know what they are missing! if they got julie to do the part, then My Fair Lady might be still selling like Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music! sheesh! so, they did audrey cuz she had money? is that y?? sory, i am a confusing hard girl to go through,....
LOL!! I meant they didn't want a flop, because Julie was known at all back then, you might know that Mary Poppins was her first movie ever, what I meant, was that with Audrey being so famous all over the world they had success guaranteed right from the beginning, whereas if Julie had been in the movie, they could never be sure could they? And My Fair Lady is still selling like TSOM and MP, it's a very popular musical all over, it's been reacreted on stage over and over again!
well, mary poppins was her first movie to be made. Camelot and My Fair Lady, she was the stage star. with Mary Poppins, she was a movie star. and, i agree, mary poppins and the sound of music are still the top best selling movies! i still have to buy tsom. tsom is in first.......and MP is second. well,. my opinion anyways. i also have to buy MFL as well! is there one that is with Julie Andrews in it instead of Audrey? black and wite? i don't want the audrey version.
SOOO TRUE! i agree. she was too good to be just the ''ghost'' voice. for the 2nd reason, actually, if i was julie, i would take it! just to make a couple buckz that would help! and i really think she shouldn't take that part cuz yes, she wouldn't be mary poppins. r u a julie andrews fan? is she ur idol? she is my idol! i loved her since i was 6 wen i watched Mary Poppins. then Sound of music my fav musicals plus West side story!
Well Catia, IF YOU KNEW the story (hehehehe) you would know that Julie was asked at first until it was decided that Andrews wasnt as big 'a name as Hepburn. Julie was dismissed. Its a good thing she didnt play in the movie too! I heard it didnt do so well. Mary Poppins did wonderfully well and Julie beat Audrey in the Academy awards. I like Audrey in that movie except for in THE RAIN IN SPAIN! you could tell she was dubbed when they start singing... lol
No, my dear Nick, don't you come and contradict me!! Julie was never asked, Rex Harrison assumed she would be chosen, and so did other people, but she was never approached to play in the movie, if you don't believe me go read her autobio or Rex Harrison's one ;) ... And My Fair Lady was a great success from the beginning, not as great as MP but a success, but when you're running up against Disney, MP and Julie Andrews all together, can you really hope to beat that? No!
So, Nick I advice to check your sources, I never post anything I'm not sure of... although if you find a better source than Julie herself, who always said she was never asked, and was only slightly bitter about it, feel free to contradict me and I shall resign ;)

@RollOnToVictory That is EXACTLY what the story is about - her heavy accent and a linguistics expert (RH) is going to make a LADY of her.

MoeTheMooseMan 8 months ago 2
@MoeTheMooseMan Julie got the Oscar that year as well (for Mary Poppins) despite "not being famous enough" to win the My Fair Lady role.
Sometime justice is done :)

Audrey is so much better for this role. She sings this song with the real "cheep" brit accent. Juile sounds like she is trying too hard to "cheepen" it up.
blueaardvark1717 8 months ago
@blueaardvark1717 Ok, you're entitled to your opinion, even when you're wrong! I don't really think Audrey was any good with the accent, but hey, the movie was done, and it worked...so...
catiaadao 8 months ago
the voice singing in the movie is not Audrey's but Marni Nixon!
rubenzilzer 9 months ago 3
@rubenzilzer I might be wrong, but I think Audrey actually sung this song in the movie, and another one... I can't remember which one was the other, but I believe it was Just You Wait!
catiaadao 9 months ago
@catiaadao The movie singer is indeed Marni Nixon, though I think the DVD has an extra with Audrey singing.
jaeladarling2 8 months ago
@jaeladarling2 I actually thought they've kept Audrey's version in the movie?? Maybe I saw it as an extra on the dvd and thought it was in the movie...
catiaadao 8 months ago
@catiaadao There are many sources that cite this tidbit. Audrey Hepburn's voice was not used for the movie, and this was in fact not an uncommon practice for movie-making in general.
jaeladarling2 8 months ago
@catiaadao Yeah it's definitely Marni Nixon in the movie, but yes Audrey sang it on the DVD extra, and I personally think Audrey is the best (at least for this song) cos her voice isn't perfect, it's raw and uinclean, just like Eliza!

AuntKreez888 9 months ago
Cinderaly001 9 months ago
@Cinderaly001 You're entitled to your opinion! But I will have to disagree with you,Audrey was indeed a brilliant actress, and I didn't say she was bad in the role of Eliza, I just think she's wrong for it, and Julie would be way way better as Eliza, not only because she played the part on Broadway but also because Julie could actually sing! And about Rex Harrison, he said the very same thing about Julie, so I'm not taking him seriously...
catiaadao 9 months ago
@catiaadao :) Ok fair enough And you're entitled to yours butt....Audrey was Perfect for it... Just like Julie Andrews was perfect for Mary Poppins...Unfortunately Julie Andrews just dont cut it for me as Eliza..she will always be better as a Mary Poppins.
Cinderaly001 9 months ago
@Cinderaly001 But the point is, you feel that way without ever have seen Julie as Eliza. You should check out the available clips on youtube, she is also perfect for Eliza, she CREATED Eliza, in the same way she created Mary Poppins, in the same way Audrey created Holly Golightly and Sabrina; the point is, in my opinion, Audrey doesn't make a perfect Eliza, not in the same way Julie does... Shall we agree to disagree? :D
catiaadao 9 months ago
@catiaadao LOOL yeh lets just agree tro disagree :P
Cinderaly001 9 months ago
@Cinderaly001 Audrey was only better for the role, because she was already very famous by the time the movie came out, which meant more people went to the see the movie with Audrey, then they would with Julie... and, I don't see any point in debating this, you still feel the way you do and I still feel the way I do!! And both Audrey and Julie are pretty amazing!!

Don't know what Shaw would have thought of the ending.

she would've been much better for the part - i hate to say this, but audrey hepburn ANNOYS MEEEEEEEEE especially the way she talks
34RiverStone 11 months ago
Actually, Julie was the producer's first choice for the film, but she was under contract with Disney for Mary Poppins, which is why Audrey Hepburn ended up with the film role. And, as good as her acting was, I totally agree and wish Andrews had been able to do the film.
desertmaestro 11 months ago 3
@desertmaestro as far as I know, and having read Julie's autobiography, I don't think she was ever considered to be in the movie, she certainly was never asked. Both movies were more or less started at the same time, but by the time Julie was asked to star in Mary Poppins, I think Jack Warner had already picked Audrey to play Eliza in the movie, but I'm not sure! I'd love to see Julie playing this part, she has said more than once that she would love to "put it to rest" but now it's late...sadly
catiaadao 11 months ago
There are Hollywood rumours about a remake of the movie, this time the screenplay would be written by Emma Thompson, there were mentions of Keira Knightly and Carey Mulligan to play Eliza, but I think that the project eventually dropped, rightly so, no matter how much I didn't really like Audrey in it, there's no sense in a remake...one of these days they'll me making as remake of Gone With the Wind...
catiaadao 11 months ago
@desertmaestro Julie was asked to do Mary Poppins, when she was doing My fair lady on Broadway, but she waited to answer them until she knew that she would not get Eliza in the movie. She even thanked the director of MFL when she got an Oscar for her performances in Mary Poppins. She was to UN-known in the movie world at that time, so they chose Audrey, whom everyone knew. Watch bonus tracks on Mary Poppins anniversary DVD and you'll get the whole story from them=)
ekstadropsen 10 months ago
@ekstadropsen That is actually not true! Julie was asked to do Mary Poppins, when she was doing Camelot on Broadway, Walt Disney came to see the show and "fell in love" with Julie. Officially Julie was never asked to do My Fair Lady, although she wanted to do it, and so did the director Moss Hart, When she was asked to do Mary Poppins she waited to answer because she was pregnant but Disney said they would wait.
catiaadao 10 months ago
@ekstadropsen And actually it was when getting the Golden Globe for Mary Poppins, that Julie, jokingly thanked the man who made it all possible Jack Warner (who decided to hire Audrey instead of Julie).
catiaadao 10 months ago
@catiaadao Sorry, it's been some time since I saw the movie, so I don't remember all the details of the story that well. The point was, that they wanted Audrey, and not Julie, and that it had nothing to do with Mary Poppins.
ekstadropsen 9 months ago
@ekstadropsen I know what you meant, but being a Julie fan and knowing the story I thought I'd clear it up, and only Jack Warner wanted Audrey and not Julie, Rex Harrison wanted Julie, the actor playing Eliza's father wanted Julie, the director Moss Hart wanted Julie...but hey, if Julie had done My Fair Lady she probably wouldn't have done Mary Poppins, so I suppose everything happens for a reason....
catiaadao 9 months ago
Julie's version is definitely the best.. she's got the right accent, an awesome voice.. I would have been interested to hear Audrey Hepburn's but still Julie is the one who rocks :)
meryldepp 1 year ago
this is a great version. Marni Nixon sang the original because Audrey Hepburn didn't have the right voice which is crap because they could have just changed the key to suit Audrey but I think prefere this version. The main reason that they didn't cast Julie Andrews for the film is because they didn't think that she wasn't famous enough.
rockandrollkid1000 1 year ago

777Luth 1 year ago 3

Jennalovesrainbows 1 year ago
@Jennalovesrainbows Julie Andrews should have done MFL. She was miscast as the buttoned down and dreary Marry Poppins.
Tolstoy111 1 year ago
@Tolstoy111 that's where you're wrong!! Mary Poppins is anything but buttoned down, or dreary, you obviously don't really know what you're talking about! Because if you did, you'd never dare to say that about Mary Poppins;) And yes, Julie should have done My Fair Lady, but then I can't picture anyone else being Mary Poppins,m because Julie is the greatest, and she also got an Oscar for it, that should tell you something! :)
catiaadao 1 year ago
@catiaadao In MP you can feel Andrews suppress her natural charm and effervescence. And she drops out of the film for such long stretches that it's virtually a supporting role. She was wasted in it.
Tolstoy111 1 year ago

Didnt Julia do the voice in the movie anyway?
HeartsMeNeko 2 years ago
no she didn't!
MLroxsursoxs 2 years ago
Well, there's a few good reasons why they didn't get Julie to sing... 1) she's way too good to just be the "ghost" voice, 2) Why would Julie accept singig the part when she wasn't even asked to play i as she should? 3) If Julie had made My Fair Lady she wouldn't have done Mary Poppins, and honestly I can't imagine another person being Mary Poppins! Julie is Mary Poppins!
catiaadao 2 years ago
And Audrey wasn't that bad, she's a great actress, ans she did well, and they didn't get Julie mostly because of money issues, they spent too much on the play rights, to afford a flop, Audrey Hepburn meant success and that's what they had!
catiaadao 2 years ago
yes i do agree. she isn't that bad she actually is a good actress! btw, i LOVE your pic! how do you get them? anyways, so, they (the director ect.) didn't want a flop?!?!?! and let me guess, that flop is julie? if it is, god! they don't know what they are missing! if they got julie to do the part, then My Fair Lady might be still selling like Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music! sheesh! so, they did audrey cuz she had money? is that y?? sory, i am a confusing hard girl to go through,....
MLroxsursoxs 2 years ago
And My Fair Lady is still selling like TSOM and MP, it's a very popular musical all over, it's been reacreted on stage over and over again!
catiaadao 2 years ago
well, mary poppins was her first movie to be made.
MLroxsursoxs 2 years ago
SOOO TRUE! i agree. she was too good to be just the ''ghost'' voice. for the 2nd reason, actually, if i was julie, i would take it! just to make a couple buckz that would help! and i really think she shouldn't take that part cuz yes, she wouldn't be mary poppins. r u a julie andrews fan? is she ur idol? she is my idol! i loved her since i was 6 wen i watched Mary Poppins. then Sound of music my fav musicals plus West side story!
MLroxsursoxs 2 years ago

No!
