Fastbuild Kit: $71,500
Finished Plane Estimate:
$180,000 - $280,000
The fastbuild kit is everything you need.Ive seen the fixed gear versions with the ballistic parachute, glass cockpit avionics and ELT built for some 120-130k. Thats a great price for a performance aircraft like this. Even with the IO360 engine it still can outmanouver and outperform any of its competing counterparts.
@eatmorenachos, well you don't have to have any experience whatsoever to build a kit aircraft like this because you get all the instructions in detailed manuals as to where all the nuts and bolts go etc.., look up a documentary called "A Plane is born" to get some idea of the building process and you shall see that its not hard at all. if you-re a full blown mechanic with a professional shop that could only help you, but like i said, its not mandtory
@aerozg actually it isn't so simple...yes there are detailed instructions and manuals and the support staff at Lancair are there to assist you, but this is a composite aircraft. You must have some knowledge of epoxy work before you start piecing one of these together. However, these skills can be learned relatively easily by attending an Experimental Aircraft Association technical workshop. The toughest part of finishing an airplane is the avionics and engine details. But it sure is fun!
The gear is retracted in 3 stages, one by one, to reduce generator load. You don't want a voltage drop, especially during take-off. It could damage your electrical system and instruments, and your gear could get stuck half retracted. Then you would have to climb the plane, manually retract the gear and possibly have no instruments, except the pitot tube - all at the same time.
You could fit a larger and heavier battery which could easily handle higher tension, but then youd have less useful load = which means less golf clubs, fishing rods and baggage space for you and your passenger.
What a gorgeous airplane. They sound very strong. I would love to get my hands on one when I am out of college and making money. I heard that the Lancair is not as forgiving as most planes. Nonetheless I would enjoy owning the FG one. I have a high performance endorsement so I wouldn't have to get a complex checkout. Great airplane.
Don´t get me wrong....experimental a/c´s is pushing the limit and composite (light weighted) aircraft represent a thinking outside the box in contrast with heavy GA-aircraft that often are underpowered as VERY conservative in terms of instrument lay.out etc.
Well, the poor sfety record speaks for it self i.e fuel system, gear etc.
Surely it is a fast bird, but because experimental aircraft are not tested as normal aircrafts the lower price comes with a big disadvantage....less safe!!!
the best bang for the buck in all aviation... you want to cruise at 280... better spend a few million dollars... with this, about 1/10 the price, and 1/5 the operating costs... not to mention, a short flight from denver to las vegas is less time then a lot of people spend just waiting in the airport for their flights. lol
been drooling for years

@aerozg ,
How hard is it to build one of these? Do you have to be a full-blown mechanic with a shop? Do they build them for you at a price?
Looks like an awesome ride!

Did any one notice at 1:33 the gear did not come up all together like many other GA airplanes
fordairport 2 years ago
Yeh why don't they all go up at the same time?
