I actually think this is a better voice quality than Amy Grant...(this comes from singer too). It has a little more comptemporary delivery... More Kelly Clarkson mixed with Grant. The video is poor, but I wish there was studio recording of Rachel singing this...
Father God in Heaven Please keep your church Holy! Lord Jesus Please keep your Priest and Nuns faithful!Oh Holy Mother please pray for your people. Amen
Everyone knocks on Amy's version but her's is very subtle because she's not trying to glorify herself through hitting crazy notes and creating vibrato. We all know she can hit notes. Rather she humbles herself on her version to get the story across. That makes her a "worship" singer. We don't praise God to receive glory. We praise God to Glorify HIM!!
As a singer, I am heartily tired of this line of thinking. This girl is using the gift God gave her to minister. If her faith and the spirit moves her to decorate the melody, then praise God that she was given the talent to accomplish it. Nowhere in scripture does it say "Thou shalt not sing with vibrato, neither shall you ornament." I'm sorry you cant be more open to different ways of praising Him.
I didn't say she was a bad singer and wasn't worshiping God. In fact if you read I compliment her ability. The comment wasn't about this singer but it would be naive to assume that every Christian singer is the business only for God's Glory. And in general I like most versions of this song because well...it's actually a Christmas song about Christ. I just got irriated looking for versions of this song and constant rips on Amy Grant...even in this video.
i agree with you. Being a singer myself, i am also VERY tired of this line of thinking. Sometimes some singers aren't made for certain songs, it's true, but there's nothing wrong with runs.
@rebekkahadrielle didn't i already explain below on this subject? I was commenting on how everyone knocks amy's version. i not once said that Rachel was glorifying herself. Though some singers out there do (I wouldn't watch this if I didn't like it) I was explaining why Amy's version is soft and subtle.
Lisa Fischer singing with Grover Washington on sax is the most chilling version....simply magnificent version. But how talented is Amy Grant to have written this masterpiece.
@teeny0518 Breath of Heaven was actually written by Chris Eaton and Amy Grant. Chris wrote it in its entirety but it was not about Mary and not a Christmas song. You can hear his original version on his CD. Amy loved it but was recording a Christmas CD at the time, so, with Chris Eaton's permission and blessing, she rewrote versus and kept the chorus and arrangement.
The only version I ever heard till right now was Jessica Simpson but I do agree this is much sweeter/smoother as someone else said. I enjoy this one very much
I don't think this is in the same key. It's higher than the key that Amy Grant sang it in. You can tell if you listen to this one right after listening to Amy's.
Rachael Lampa has an amazing voice. I love this song and her rendition of it...although I love Amy Grant's version as well. I can't believe she's (Rachael) a backup singer now. Ugh!
I love this song! i watched Passion of the christ for easter, I balled the whole way through. Jesus is our best friend, the bravest person there ever was!!
This song is so beautiful about how Mary, only a simple woman, was willing to do what God asked her and that was to bear God's Son and allow him to be born to die. All for the sake of the love of mankind. Jesus Christ was the final sacrifice. Before Him, you had to offer sacrifices for sin, but through Him we are saved. He was the fulfullment of a deep love God has for us, reversing what Adam's sin had brought to us. Truly Jesus is the breath of heaven...
She has a great voice, too bad she closes her eyes too much. The band arrangement SUCKS! The drums take away from the melancholy mood of the song. Listen to Sara Grove's version of this song - by far the best arrangement I've heard followed closely by Amy Grant's rendition.
I really love Sara Groves' cover. The one thing I like about Rachael Lampa's cover is that she is a little closer to the age that Mary was when she was visited by the angel. Frankly, I think the song would be that much more meaningful if sung by a teenaged girl (who could really sing, of course!) because it would be more realistic. Just my opinion. :-)
If you go to the website for flatirons community church, you can watch video of last year's christmas service online where she sing o holy night. Its really cool!
..what a voice...does anyone have any tips to have a range like she does? her voice is so great, its controlled, she has great style and she has power!
This song is beautiful, no doubt, and I like the way she does it. As for comparing it to Amy Grant...I'd have to see Amy Grant sing the song live. For Rachel Lampa, it's all in the facial expressions and the soul she's putting into it...it gives me goosebumps :)
i luv rachael lampa with all my liver. this is actually one of most fav christmas songs ever. now to hear my fav singer doin it, ohhh! It's like hot cocoa for my soul!
That's why God gave us different ears and voices. It's ok. I didn't mean for mine to sound like I hated anyone answer. I just like hers better. I hear raspiness but I think that is the recording. Hey I could be wrong.
NO WAY! (to the comment below) You do it SO MUCH BETTER than Amy Grant!!!! I sing this song every year for Christmas eve! I am a singer and I know what I'm talking about. (everyone has there own opinion though) You put feeling in to it, it's Beautiful!
1) This Mary showing her fear while she humbly accepts the great task given. She could have been stoned to death for this yet she goes on. That is pain, so Ms. Lampa should not sing w/ a stoic face, this is a song about Mary showing pain for once.
2) The song is asking for the help of God, the Holy Spirit to hold a person together...I don't know anyone who could ask for that w/o being in pain. I know I broke and cried as I asked for God to hold me together for the coming events of my life.
Just that she might be straining her vocal cords, that's all.
I'm just stating something.
I said that I thought the performance was good, heaven forbid I make one observation and everyone has to jump all over my back. It's called an opinion.
Good observation... I agree that she looks like she's in pain.
We should keep in mind that Mary was a teenaged girl who had NO idea what it was like to feel pregnant... especially since she was not impregnated the "tradional" way, eh?... so frightened, I'd imagine... especially since she could face being stoned for her being accused of losing her virginity before marriage... confused, without her mother or any female relative. I can understand pain showing on her face.
Wow, Girl you are letting God use you! Praise God for the work in you! Thank you for helping me realize I need to be using my gifts for God and God alone!
I can honestly say that I prefer her version over that of the original. Ever since her first hit single, she has motivated me to continue with my own vocal style and have faith that it's worth hearing.
she looks like she's constipated or in pain because she's trying her best to sing, unlike other singers with fake talents who lipsync.. try to hit the high notes in front of a mirror, you will not make those incosiderate comments anymore..
Rachael is one of the most amazing vocalists ever, no matter the genre. I love that she praises God through her music. I have loved this song ever since Amy Grant put out her Christmas record 15 years ago.
