No, mine isn't Boomy at all. Now the HD-35 to me is sort of Boomy, the D-35 sounds better (To me) than the HD-35. That's why I chose the HD-28. Best under $3000 acoustic around IMHO :-)
Plays great and the tone is superb from very light finger pickin to hittin it hard.
Nancy Wilson from Heart plays the heck out of her Martin. :-)
I ended up doing an A-B comparison of the D-28 & the HD-28 and IMHO the HD blew it out of the water as far as loudness and projection. I didn't feel it was Boomy at all. Bought it from MFD in Naples Fl. he has the absolute lowest prices and the easiest ordering on the internet. Beat Musicians Friend by $700 :-) I love my Martin.
@hawg427 Yeah wait until it opens up. It won't be boomy. It will be deep rich boom! I had a 1992 HD-28. I gave it to my Dad, because liked it. What a great sounding guitar. In return he gave me a brand new HD-16R LSH. What a great guitar. I'd never would trade him back. The HD-28LSH V,and the D-28 Clarence White has nothing on the HD-16R LSH. When she opens up. You will love it even more. Everyday she gets better and better.
Like my 000-15M, probably just plays itself. The kid merely held it (granted, I believe he probably plays far better than I, when handed an instrument where it shows). ;)
@hawg427 the H stands for herringbone. that means it has "scalloped" bracing. they basically shave down the braces which lets the top resonate better leading to a more open sound with better bass response. some say its too boomy, some love it. u just have to play one.
FWIW... D-28 straight braces, black pickguard, modern gold foil logo / HD-28 scalloped braces, tortoise pickguard, herringbone trim, modern gold foil logo / HD-28V scalloped and forward shifted braces, tortoise pickguard, butterbean open back tuners, old style logo, herringbone trim, v-neck profile
I own one (year 2000) bought by chance last xmas, as soon as I played it and the guy at the shop played in front of me I was sold to it. Beautiful instrument!!!! and I was not even looking for a Martin guitar.
No, it wouldnt be a mistake...fishman make some great pickup's also have a look at Martin's own pu's.... Just be sure to get someone who knows what there doing to put it in for you!...and the ones that go in the sound hole sound have a little more middle in them, but i prefer the 'under the bridge' situation, if ya know what i mean!
I have one of these beasts. I planned to get a Taylor at the local store, but like you said when you play it the tone just amazing. Anyone who plays it round my house is also amazed by it.
I agree-I have a regular, straight braced D-28. The HD is a fine guitar but you need to find one that doesn't sound too 'tubby' in the bass. They can sound a bit flabby and I much prefer the mid-range punch of the D-28.
yer it is brighter,, but it also has alot more punch,, bassey sound,, weird to say but thats why its so great its very well balanced between tone, bass, and projection
I agree. It's odd because I buy Martin's for their bass response and more even tone overall, but the HD-28 sounds a bit muddy to me on the low and middle end. The D-28 to me sounds much better all around.
well the V stands for the vintage model. Thus you get the "V" shaped neck and vintage tuners. The vintage model also uses forward shifted scalloped X bracing while the regular HD-28 uses just scalloped X bracing. Both are very similar u just have to try them out yourself. The Difference might not be much but its there.
There is a bigger difference between the D-28 and HD-28 though...
i really like plaing john martyn and am wondring if any 1 could tell me the one 2 buy im 14 and can spend about 740 pound please i would be very gratefull for your help
for 720 you can bargain an d 28 which you will love and cherish for the rest of your life. You can always sell it even though you should never want to. The D28 is a benchmark. I got a D35 in london 1300 pounds. You can find a used one in store as good as new even better as it has ripened as long as it doesnt have scratches and stuff. if you are looking to spend a bit less the D15 was my first Martin and believe me its a wonder. I can tell you D 15 OR D28,D (35) later for a thick bass sound
crosby, stills,Nash and young all bought there Martin D45 and the same time back in about 1970, the main sound you here from neil young is his D45 and his many D28, he also has D18 that have a bit of a brighter sound, so to get there sound a Martin HD28 or a Martin HD28v will serve you well, not to mention the D45, but the D45 are about 5 to 6,000 dollers...I have a HD28 and it has a great bassey sound I love it, and they go for about 2,600 dollers, but worth every penny..
I ran into some money, amd I want to buy a HD28 tommorow, but does anybody know the fifference between the D28 and the HD28, is there a differnce in sound??
I bought a D-16RGT. To me, the HD-28 has some similar problems, as far as my preferences go. I think scalloped bracing, which both this and the D-16RGT share, contributes greatly to the overall sound, however, it seems to depress the mids. I seem to crave more mids which get overpowered with the highs and lows. The D-28, with straight bracing, seems to me a more balanced range, and with age, will come to be an ultimately better sounding guitar in my opinion. I'm saving to trade up...
Je l'ai essayé tout à l'heure et elle sonnait pas du tout comme ça... j'aime pas ce genre de guitariste : Peu importe qu'ils jouent avec une gratte à 200 ou 2000 elle sonne pareil...

Morrell Music should hire some flat pickers. This is a Martin, not a sorry ass Gibson, and Taylor.

I am blessed to own one of these beautiful HD-28's. I had the Fishman+. System installed by a Martin luthier and the sound is amazing!

I love my HD28 - I just wish the neck was a little thicker.
The old necks - pre "low profile" - were like tree-trunks. But the new necks are a shade too thin.
Does anyone agree?
The tone and volume of the HD28s, though, are amazing - much. much louder than my Gibson J200, even though the latter has a bigger body.
Long live scalloped bracing!

The HD28 will project more and seem louder due to the bracing difference between it and the D28. One of Martin's top sellers for this reason.
Check our site for pricing, and don't forget the 10% youtube coupon.

I've played this guitar, and it sounded suprisingly good, considering it's Martin. This and the D-18 are the only Martins I like.
