We do have this "Theft Recovery" system but it uses signals from when the computer is turned on they can track WHERE the computer is and then have the computer LOCK completely (nothing works - not even power button) and then the School district is contacted and depending on how/wat/when/where they will decide to press theft charges! THEY TAKE STOLEN COMPUTERS VERY SERIOUSLY!!

Ideally law enforcement officials needed an immediate warrant to seize the computers of all people with access ability to "turn on" a students webcam to determine if pictures or cam-streams were saved and to what extent, if any. If they didn't do this, there may have been a whole-lot-a-deletin' going on. Regardless, NO school superintendent, principal, or even techy-dude/dudette in their right mind should have EVER agreed to this method of finding a "lost" laptop!! There are other ways.

I've talked about stuff like this in law class. School's actually have more rights to search kids than police. Though it's against the law to video tape someone without them knowing. It's all good now, Nalts. Canadian kids have exacted revenge for the American school using macbooks to spy on their students..
Last week a student at Churchill HS in Winnipeg used her cellphone camera to capture a simulated lapdance ( and other supposedly lewd acts) between two teachers in the gym, during a rally. It was a sensation on the internet (google two teachers one chair) .

My school's laptops have this cam where teachers can watch your computer screen. It only works within a 100 yards distance or something so I think I'm safe.

I think school administrations are all around corrupt. There are rumors going around about me and the headmaster said they can't do anything 'because they're true.' I don't care if they're true, it's MY private business! If I wanted the school to know about it I would tell them myself!
Pretty much all adults get into their heads that kids are stupid and don't deserve some of the rights we are given, like the right to privacy. If this was a parent I might cut some slack, but this is inexcusable.

There are plenty of other ways they could have tracked where he took the computer, it wouldn't even be bad if they check what he was using the computer for, since it is their computer, but there is no reason to turn on the webcam. That is over the top and its really not the schools business if the kid is smoking pot in his room

i entirely agree, because i mean the IT's or whoever monitors the webcam feed could be a pedofile that seen some young minor wether it was a girl or boy. saved the images and kept it for their own sick reasons, and with the kid smoking pot. yes their should be a agreement stating that the camera will be feeding to them 24/7 due to invasion of privacy especally for unreasonable usage, i could understand more if they were catching it being moved far away or student kidnapped/robbed. but pot? BS!!!

well as students we do lose alot of our rights while in school but i know i had a computer with a webcam that was on so i just put a sticky note on it, they also haev a screen that shows all of our screens of what we type for our essays or what we might be looking on the web but invading soemones home is not ok

An teacher in my Junior high i went to recorded his classes and put all the "attractive girls" in the back of the class by the webcam, he streamed it to some sight, it wasnt for his purpose of viewing it at a later date or anything. Thankfully he got fired, and was doing drugs too or something. so aparently its not that uncommon? what freaks.

I've talked about stuff like this in law class. School's actually have more rights to search kids than police. Though it's against the law to video tape someone without them knowing. Unless they gave out these pamphlets telling the students tat the labtops would take pictures, then this wouldn't be an invasion of privacy. I'd say this was against the law.

My school gives out Macbooks to all of the high school (and 8th grade) kids in the district, and this really freaks me out. Some of our tech people are pretty sketchy... I wouldn't want them taking pictures of me when I'm using the computer at home.

Absolutely despicable. I don't care how illegal the stuff you do at home is, it is not the place of a SCHOOL to regulate private behavior--that's up to law enforcement.
And even then, there shouldn't be any form of surveillance employed in private homes whatsoever. Does it mean some people get away with breaking the law? Yes. But it's not right to punish the innocent, law-abiding majority by spying on them.
There's enough distrust in this society as it is.
