You lot are arguing about who is better when it's down to personal opinion and taste. I've had more laughs out Lamarr than i'll ever get out of Amstell because Lamarr caters to my sense of humour. I'm sure Amstell caters more to the younger generation of kids these days, where as Lamarr is close to a lot of our hearts as he was there since most of us started watching it.
Also in my personal opinion Lamarr can do jokes and humour off the Autocue better than Amstell.
@lesterclaypool1 his presentation is worse though, although that could be the writers. i hated the monotony of lamar saying band name+band fact+band fact jokeX3=1 round for 1 team
Only ever watched amstell / guest host episodes but I'm sure Lamarr was great in his own way, don't see why he has to be necessarily "better" than amstell or why amstell would have to be better than him
does anyone really think lamar wants that fella dead? no, hes having a joke. but when amstell is telling preston what a fucking moron his wife is, everyone knows its the truth (mainly because she is, i suppose). thats why i preffered mark, hes having a laugh with the guests, while simon was having a go at them. but, best host ever, wogan!
Simon Amstell however didnt say that Preston's wife was a moron. He read from her book. He made someone walk off by promoting their wife's book. You gotta give him credit for that.
i preferred lamarr, but found amstell equally as good a host. The only thing that swung mark as the winner for me was that fact that you also got a good musical education from mark. Jokes and banter would allways be accompanied by great music trivia. Lamarr helped me win a few pub quizzes many a time.
people always back amstell (and he was good definatly) but lamaar always come up on top in my eyes, but maybe its becuase being introduced to buzzcocks it was him first and he made me love the show.
I have gone off it considerably with the change of host's
@jadekillcity I didn't like Anstell, Lamarr just had a way with things, he would only rip into guests if they offered themselves for it, and had such a great chemistry with Bill
The "Lamaar is God everyone else sux!" crowd are so annoying, if anyone gives any credit whatsover to Amstell they blow a fuse, just look at some of the comments on here. Lamaar was great, Amstell was great, they were similar in many ways and different in others, it's known that Lamaar was a fan of Amstell so I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate some of the disgusting things Lamaar fanboys say about him. Stop with the childish little comments and try to appreciate two excellent comedians and hosts.
Mark Lamarr is vastly superior in wit and intellect to Simon Amstell but Simon Amstell is vastly superior in wit and intellect to the guest hosts they now use and this is why Never Mind the Buzzcocks has slowly been getting worse for several years now.
Lamar was phenomenal, Amstell was phenomenal.... All these little cock-mokey's (that cunt from Kaiser Cheifs in particular) are shite. Amstell was an excellent choice to fill the massive shoes Lamar left. Since Amstell's departure there have been some fucking painfully pathetic substitutes.
@atticbadger I completely agree with you. I LOVED Mark and I loved Simon. Miss 'em both. I get very tired of people putting poor Simon down because he wasn't Mark.
I've watched both Mark and Simon episodes and think Amstell is 100 wittier. It's factual. Lemarr did not know how to take the piss properly. He would act like a circus monkey , hiting Bill with a question ssheet spilling water etc. . It was sometimes painful to watch. Each and every Amstell episode is like a mini stand up gig for me. Beautifully crafted.
This is why I love Mark, he would have fun with the guests rather than full on attack them with snide comments throughout the show, which lead to a more relaxed atmosphere. But one of the guests annoyed him, he didn't need a script to put them in their place. I would love to have seen him deal with Danny Tourettes or even the Preston walk off. Yes, Simon is funny in a different way, but Mark was quick, sharp and never looked like he wasn't in control of the show.
@GustavMeyrink Yes, that's a good play on words [I feel], and I overreacted somewhat to this particular clip; however, his intelligence is what makes me dislike him more when he's acting like a twat on other occasions. What's worse than a prick? An intelligent prick [i.e. a powerful prick]. At least to me.
@1982markosoft On second thought this was hardly bad; slightly long-winded, but rather calm. Still don't see how this person needed to be 'put in his place'; I don't think he coughed on purpose, and people are usually put in their places for something they consciously decided to do, no?
@ExEverest10 Have you seen the full episode? The guy was being an annoying prick on purpose, acting thick - almost like a lite version of Danny the 'Punk' was with Amstell later on in the series. People were well tired of him by this point, I don't think Lamarr was being harsh at all, and didn't attack him personally.
I always remember this episode whenever I watch the one that had Bill Oddie in it, it was horribly painful to watch. It needed Lamarr to yell at him to stfu & stop being tedious.
@happyjellyfish Well, he did attack him personally, he selected him out of the group...no? But if that was a case, then ok, I don't subscribe to the notion of justice [that would be a long discussion], but like I said, this isn't as bad as I thought initially. Should've accounted for the more controversial videos usually rising to the top of the search.
@ExEverest10 What on earth are you on about? Attacking him personally does not equal singling him out. A personal attack would be 'lay off the crack, you're stupider than a small mollusc.' Frankly, Lamarr could have been a lot less forgiving with the weak attempt at hilarity "ima-punky-chav s'aight if I haf a smoke then?" comment.
Simon was much more infamous for personally humiliating his guests, so I suggest you skip those clips because you will surely be offended by the way he wields wit.
@happyjellyfish I used a different definition of a 'personal attack' then; forgot people use that as a go-to term for ad-hominem attacks. Meant personal, as in person, and attack, as in insult; both of which are valid [depending on how pedantic you want to be with the term 'insult' of course]. Btw, the guy never said what you quoted, the quote was 's'alright if I smoke?' Lastly, I never get offended, but I do get pissed off at people who are skilled in insulting, and use it for no good reason.
@ExEverest10 Dude, this show is just not for you. Also, your definition of personal attack is redundant, because to insult someone it has to be personal. Ad hominem attacks are just a way of misdirecting an argument, not THE definition of personal attack. You might want to reread my previous comment because I don't think you understood my 'misquote'. Let's leave it at that, shall we?
@happyjellyfish It is redundant, but it was caused by your phrasing. You wouldn't criticize me [I'm assuming] for understanding what 'living vicariously through someone' meant [assuming I wasn't the author of that phrase]; so why do it here? 'Tis true, there's a slight caveat in that ad hominem attacks typically link the percieved erroneous nature of an argument with the characteristics of it's author, whereas personal attacks merely insult.
I remember watching this when it was broadcast and literally laughing/cheering. Lamarr was genius and that little tosser should have realised early on that you cannot beat a professional comedian, especially when as a regular host the audience will always be on his side! Lamarr was the best and Buzzcocks is pointless without him.
@backto1960 To be fair, if you watch the show, the dude was being a tedious boring shite since the beginning and trying to be cool about it. I'm quite surprised Lamarr didn't blow up at him sooner. Or really tear into him.
Lamarr's pretty tame here. 'Not tempt, goad... or possibly force.' <---and hilarious.
This is why marks the best he doesnt care for egos and if he thinks your're a twat he'll let you know...simon just played at it i.e the preston walk off, i would of loved to have seen mark deal with it. please come back!
@LimitedPeopleSkills You've pretty much summed it up right there! I remember watching something where Phil commented on how Simon wasn't as capable of handeling some of the guests like Mark was. I wish Mark would at least come back for a guest host and show them how it's done.
The guest he mocks is Dominic Masters from "indie-rock" band The Others. They were "famous" around your usual "indie-rock" haunts about 2004/2005 if my memory serves me correctly x
I like them both, but I prefere Lamarr's more agressive style towards the stupid celebs. Amstell is more wimpy and harmless...
