u know u could donate your art to help org. or not waste food. just a thaught.... seems like such a waste. Sell them and donate to charities. You are gifted no question. your art is motivating!! Why not help others with your message??
I really like this idea. I like that even without the physical thing, you've got a record of the art, through your videos. It's not about the physical art, it's about the whole creative experience. I love it!
I'm not sure what the message is in the destruction of the piece.. impermanence? don't take it too seriously? All I'm getting from it is bravado. Many people wish they could make something that nice just once in their lives - but you do it so easily that you just throw it away.
maybe for him, he doesn't get satisfaction after finishing a piece, but the creation process instead. No need to keep the piece when you have pictures and video when it's gonna just clutter up the place. Especially since he does so many :)
Phil is a process artist. The art itself is not the final piece, but the process used in creating it. Phil specializes in using obscure techniques and mediums, which makes him so well known and unique.
thats awesome how you destroyed everything, it shows that you just create things for your own entertainment, not for money or fame. i personally could never destroy my own work, possibly a sign?
A lot of artists who create physical pieces tend to just destroy them after a photograph of it. Its solely dependent on the artist, its there piece so they can do what they like with it.
I agree. I do a lot of art for fun and normally i tear it up/ destroy it or if one of my friends wants to keep it i let them have it. After its done once, I dont want to do it again, I want to go on to bigger and better things.. something diff.
Kind of a ironic filming yourself 'destroying' the art and placing the video online, it will now exist and be seen by more people than the foam or the image ever would. You have given this work nigh on eternal life, you hypocrite.. it looked good though.
wats the point of making something if u dont keep it? so now u get to go around saying "hey i made this really brilliant thing but i completly destroted it" so much for getn an exibit in a museum
It's to say my art isn't special, everyone can do something, just get off your ass and do it. When we idolize art and artists we're missing the point. The point is viewing things differently, the point is being creative, the point is communicating visually, the point isn't quite any of those things, but they're all fingers pointing in the right direction.
it would go against everything that makes his art so great if he kept it or sold it. there are millions of people that can draw a picture, but it is the message and the process that puts the real message and power into a work of art. So, in the end no matter how many pieces he rips it into, the art isn't destroyed.
A. Stumble Upon is awesome. B. this kid is obviously guided by the hand of God physically and mentally.....i have never seen such creativity and could never even fathom it.
To show you that it's the learning experience, and the creative moments that are the most important. The process of building and creating an artificial life.
Not the actual piece itself.
That's just physical proof, which Phil is trying to prove has little importance when compared to the experience of creating and building a world, or at least a piece of it...
Phil, maybe you've already been asked.. but what sort of film and lighting was used for the image to be captured through the sand box? and I'll guess that the type of light used, couldn't push through foamcore board, and the sand was jsut used for grain effect?
i think it would be cool if one of these times after you destroyed a picture you took what was left of it and made another. (ex. the scraps from this, the burnt matches from the jimi hendrix piece, etc.)

NOOOOOO! good god! Someone would have paid for that! Love your work but damn I can understand throwing away the foam and sand part but the picture too?!

Why do such a thing to a graet piece of art like that? Think about it what would happen to da vinci if he destroyed his work what would happen to all the great artist if they did that?
It's alright because its not forgotten. This video is almost greater art than the finished product, because not only do we see the final piece, but we also see him creating it.
