Set the controls for the heart of the sun

  • I adore this version of this song, one of my favourites, Waters' accent makes it sound so much cooler than on the album. What. A. Song.

  • Back in highschool, my process of becoming a Floyd fan began. I'd been listening to The Wall and Dark Side, but Live At Pompei sealed the deal for me. That's when I really became hooked. It's always been one of the most fascinating things in music I've ever seen and heard. I just wish they'd release a soundtrack to this video.

  • ive been listen to PF for maybe 10 years and ive never heard this song....... im gunna go kill myself now

  • @eugieteugiet IF YOU WANT THERE IS A VERSION OF SET THE CONTROLS WITH BARRETT.IT'S FROM DENMARK.COPENHAGEN.YEAR 1967.QUALITY IS EXTREMELY BAD,BUT IT'S PEARL.WE HAVEN'T MANY VERSIONS OF THIS SONG WITH BARRETT.I SUPPOSE IT IS ONLY LIVE VERSION WITH BARRETT.

  • La mejor banda de rock progresivo y sinfonico de todos los tiempos

  • roger waters is awesome.

  • @DanW900 Saw him do "The Wall" in Manchester,England.in May .Hes was awesome,he really was.Am not bragging ,but ive seen alot of bands over years.Everything from.Morrisey to Faith No More and while all, well mostly, great ,none come close to that as an experience, musically or visually....Nice to talk to you,Take care

  • listen to this song more than 4 times a day and you will levitate

  • L.S.D.

  • HA! Love this band, loved David Gilmore. He helped the band become something other than organized chaos when Syd Barrett was falling apart. And in those days he was hot...

  • This music is too short,i would listen to it if it had 15 min :)

  • I love this version !!

couldent resist doing an 'expandis' version though ..... nothing like the Floyd of course.

please let me know what you think !

  • King Crimson forced Pink Floyd into their greatness. Competition is man's grandest powertool of all.

  • Thumbs up if Nick Mason saying this is his favorite song to play on the drums brought you here!

  • @odysseyy Haha! Love this song, and yea, that's what made me look this up too! Awesome! :)

  • listening to this is like being touched by the hand of god

  • This song feels like the universe

  • 3:33 Nick's drum pattern: The inspiration for "Chop Suey" by System of a Down!

  • 39 people have set 'em wrong

  • That "tch" "tch "tch", then the keyboards kick in at 2:47 then heaven, only felt joy like that in the 1st 5 mins of mozarts requim.

  • amazing...

  • Nick is the only person who can wear a butterfly t-shirt and still be a badass

  • @360Freakoutkid not to mention that moustache

  • @360Freakoutkid

Yep - but he looks like a bank manager nowadays though!

    Such a great track.

  • @360Freakoutkid

its probably an iron butterfly shirt. haha

  • @crayZtaco7

    it is.

  • @DropBearFTW

i want one. cus iron butterfly is pretty sick. i mean. they gotta be for nick mason to wear their shirt.

  • @360Freakoutkid Not true, Terence Mckenna can too!

  • 37 people do not know where to set the controls

  • @heavyrockfan98 nice one, usually i find those comments about dislikes annoying, but that one really made me laugh :D

  • Classic drug music. The reality is a lot of people got into Pink Floyd and lot of different/experimental music in general because they experimented with Psychedelics and Weed. Music does sound better in an altered state, it opens you up. But Floyd sound great sober as well.

  • There really is something special about Pink Floyd, even from the early days of 'Emily' and' Arnold Layne' there are other bands that i adore but none can equal the Floyd.

  • @keefyd5 dude...there were lots of experimental and even more groundbreaking bands by 1968...not even mentioning the german scene....just that the floyd were and are more commercial, thats about it, they were awesome though

  • amazin,, i can listen all day xx

  • Comment removed

  • Really hooked on this song atm. It seems to slip into the background when I'm doing stuff

  • i've never taken drugs. which i'm proud of. but i'd love to hear some experiences of people on drugs, and listening to this song. Any good stories anyone?

  • @ArtOfRuin75 I don't think you need drugs to listen to Pink floyd

  • @ArtOfRuin75 the best experience is when you talk to your inner self, to your spirit (which is connected to the whole universe). I've dreamed the phone number of an ex for which I had bad karma, so the next day I've called her and told her I'm sorry and my life became much better.

  • I wish I could've seen this band live. Purely amazing.

  • Every time you listen to this song, it counts as getting high.

  • When going to the Sun, the thing to remember is to go at night. It's too hot during the day.

  • I love this music. I tell my generation you can have lady Gaga, eminem, wayne, and the rest of them. They ain't got nothin on this.

  • I love that butterfly T-shirt. Nick Mason always was the best-dressed.

  • My favorite floyds song

  • Listen beginning @ 5:23 - Hmm..... This was done way before the group Boston recorded Longtime/Foreplay, Could Boston have maybe gotten a few ideas from this Floyd tune?

  • and 40 years later, I still know the lyrics ! it's a bit strange, we were young and beautiful, we were full of hopes... what's happened to us ? life and now death... Syd and Rick are already gone... F... shit !

  • WOW ! I was so young then...

  • @ZELDA54F I still am young, at least in my world .........

  • I have a fantasy where Captain Kirk turns to Zulu and says, "Mr. Zulu, set the controls for the heart of the sun".

  • @vkman34 : I love the idea !!!

  • Mason was the heart of the Sun

  • WHETHER THE SUN WILL FALL IN THE EVENING

WILL HE REMEMBER THE LESSON OF GIVING?

  • snarehanger: You are seeing a solar flare around 4:14.

  • i'm on high..god..

  • this song really helps me pooh, very satisfying big firm dollops

  • This tune makes you feel like you've had 2 bong hits even without a spacecake or spliff

  • The reason why I like this band and song so much is because there great while high and not as well!!!!

  • Beam me up!

  • My All Time Favorite. (Well, after anything by Gwyneth Paltrow - I'm broke in the head about my Gwynnies. ;) )

  • Live at Pompeii - that's the Right Stuff. :)

  • wtheck is this!

  • I know its nut's

  • I'm the same guy? U tell me.

  • its even better when you think of the time it came from this sounds like it didnt even come from fucking earth man

  • this is fantastic ... would not try and out do Floyd but I would like feedback on my 'expandis' version of this song .....

  • 37 people are justin beaver fans

  • No need of any kind of drugs for this songs ....evergreen forever ....37 ppl r asshole who dislike dis song ...

  • No comment ! great !!!

  • I'm arguing with a kid at work who is so ignorant and claims Lil Wayne is better then Floyd.. its impossible to convince these people

  • @ Ascensionseo....words of another galaxy!! :)))

  • the mothership is pleased to bring you an 'expandis' take on this song.

please check it out and leave feedback ....

  • Such big energy from a few dudes.........

  • Their music was from the 60s and 70s, and here we are, the year 2011, and still enjoying that amazing band known as Pink Floyd.

  • IMPOSTARE I CONTROLLI X IL CUORE DEL SOLE!!!!

  • Best ever in rock genre - of all time

  • BEST FUCKING SONG EVER!

  • Duudeee, las letras basadas en el libro de I Ching son de la canción Chapter 24 del disco The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (canción que fue compuesta por Syd). La letra de Set the Controls... es de Roger.

  • Had two Pink Floyd posters, one was from this recording the other was the dark side cover...they were in my room in every house i was living in for nearly 20 years! from primary school to my student years, from Greece to England!

  • This Song Definatley represents the Progessive Rock of the 70's ! Love The Floyd !

  • I think this could have fit well into almost any scene featuring a slowly moving boat in Apocalypse Now.

  • The lyrics are partly borrowed from some Chinese poems apparently.

I love this song, the droning guitars, the chanting vocals and the hypnotising timpani create a really well balanced piece of experimental music. It's partially sad that they didn't pull this kind of experimentation through in their later work. Of course I love their later work and it is by no means standard, especially at the time, but it feels as though the band never fully evolved.

  • Combo organ through a delay unit: such a simple idea, but no one did it better than Rick Wright.

  • what the lyrics are about?

  • who wrote the lyrics to this song, was it Rodger?

  • @EvilMickey99 Roger composed the lyrics, but borrowed from far east poetry- from some of Li Shangyin's translated poetry "Untitled iii" , "Up in Heaven" aka "A Ballad of Heaven", and Li He's "Don't Go Out of the Door. " Items found in "Poems of the Late T'ang" by A.C. Graham.

  • Magic! Awesome!

  • if Pink Floyd were an 80's band ........

check out the 'Expandis' version - haha !!!

  • soooooooo high right now!..

  • with two simple lines of instruments and amazing vocals reciting the meaningful lyrics...Just imagine how creative these guys were...I wish we have them forever...Coz i dont expect ppl to come up with such good music anymore...Pink floyd til I die...

  • We meet again 240P >_>....

  • this music is a drug, listening can almost induce a shamanic experience

  • Comment removed

  • I appreciate the shit they didn't even when they weren't on drugs too (dark side, meddle, the wall). It wasn't as self-indulgent, and songwriting and song structure became much more important - greatly written, timeless songs.

  • I love this song so much. The eery bassline is perfect. They are so ahead of their time. I know they didn't do a lot of drugs and whatnot, but their music is very enjoyable while on mushrooms :p

  • @paganpusher I wasn't ranting, I was commenting on how some of the particularly pretentious posts that glorified drug use were making me cringe. the fact that you are walking around claiming you know what the band would say indicates to me that you truly are an arrogant c*nt! anyway, i'll just be quiet now.

  • This song was futuristic in 1968 and 43 years later, it's still the music of the future. Just tells you how many generations ahead these guys were

  • Floyd songs from late syd era somehow give me the creepy chills. Just the title of this one.

  • excellent response @crazyplant.

Like the poetry written in the Li Dynasty, where some of the lyrics are borrowed from. this simple but extremely effective piece of music is timeless - Yea. Prog Rock

  • they've hypnotized me, let them hypnotize you.

  • I've always enjoyed bands who test the limits of their minds. This band was on drugs during the entire process of this song.. and all songs during this era. I'd love to know what you take for a headache every fucking day at work or how much sugar you dump into your coffee in the morning? What do you define as a drug?

  • 37 people have no ears...

  • 999,959 Veiws! :)

  • Clearly a lot of (U.S) west coast (Airplane etc) in there, other (early) tracks hint at the Who perhaps. Love this stuff, though in general I prefer later Floyd, having said that the Dark Side of the Moon era version of 'Careful with that Axe Eugene' (here on YouTube) is bloody great.. I do wonder though how music history may have differed if Syd had stuck around..

  • you don't need drugs to enjoy Pink Floyd...you need Pink Floyd to enjoy drugs...

  • @AscensionSEO

    well said!

  • @AscensionSEO genius!!!

  • If I ever find out who dislikes this I will destroy them...with the power of music.

  • @TheDemetriusblack and chuck norris's cock!

  • I've enjoyed this music with and without drugs. The experienced that walk among us can still get that jittery feeling when we hear this, without the influence of any mind altering substance.

  • So heavenly. I'm convinced this is on God's iPod. Such a mysterious piece of work

  • wITHOUT lsd this music can never be heard!!!

  • so there is like a woman blowing a goat in this! haha

  • Am I the only one who looks at this video and listens to this song and thinks that they're way better than today's crap?

  • @xenocratus you ain't the only one

  • They called them the band of the future, and they are, we are talkin about the 60s and 70s and today they still reign over the world with Dark Side and other amazin records, that's why it's called Progressive Rock!

  • @Metal8909 actually its called progressive rock due to the fact it doesnt abide by the verse chorus verse format

  • @Metal8909 The other Prog Rock bands can't even came close to Pink Floyd/

  • @Metal8909 ironic isn't it that today's music has gone the otherï
