Classic drug music. The reality is a lot of people got into Pink Floyd and lot of different/experimental music in general because they experimented with Psychedelics and Weed. Music does sound better in an altered state, it opens you up. But Floyd sound great sober as well.

I love this song, the droning guitars, the chanting vocals and the hypnotising timpani create a really well balanced piece of experimental music. It's partially sad that they didn't pull this kind of experimentation through in their later work.
