  • great playing. do you warm your hands up with stretching and massaging certain areas of the arms. i find that to be useful since i started to relearn the guitar on an 8

  • If I may ask how fast was that bpm wise and how fast can you play up to?

  • @Imparts6893 this video is 160 triplets, but Im able to play way into the 200's, in 16th notes

  • @3energizer3 isn't musically what? was your sentenced finished?

  • @scalethesummit

I meant playing a major scale as fast as you can has NOT a lot to do with music, expression, emotion, understand?

  • @3energizer3 what about it?

  • @3energizer3 Your grammar makes me giggle.

  • @3energizer3 You choose to say something like that on the channel of a band whose music doesn't actually have much real "shred" in it at all? Some people do decide the strangest things...

  • @3energizer3

Yeah, just like doing leg presses has nothing to do with being a good soccer player. Building technique gives you a lot more options for writing music. Please, don't talk about something that you're ignorant of as if you know what you're talking about. It only makes you look foolish.

  • @3energizer3 have you ever even listened to scale the summit before....?

  • @3energizer3 Your sentence isn't grammatically.

  • @PERFECTfallstoPIECES

    Sure....blah blah blah...

    Is this correct?

  • @3energizer3 You're exactly right, good Sir. Pure speed does not make one a talented songwriter/accomplished musician.

That being said, Chris Letchford is both a fantastic "shredder" and songwriter. This clip wasn't meant to showcase musical expression - it's a scale.

If you're interested in hearing musical compositions of such grandeur, may I recommend some Scale the fucking Summit?

  • yeah i'm on the same road as you, i just graduated highschool and have been playing for 5 years, i've been taking private lessons and now am attending a community college to study music theory etc. i really wish i could go to MI though, that would be sick.

  • what school/classes did you take? you inspire me everyday to sit in my room for countless hours.

  • @earlbrown33 Houston Community College, Berklee and Musicians Institute, over 7 years of private lessons, and countless hours teaching myself stuff off the internet, videos, and books.

  • man how did you get your technique so smooth and flawless?

  • @earlbrown33 countless hours in my bedroom practicing. i did a lot of school as well, which helped to lead me in the right direction. dedicate the time and you will get where you want to be for sure! I still feel I have a long way to go, to get where I want to be.

  • that sounded cool, i saw you guys live in LA with drem theater, zappa plays zappa and big elf. you guys are amazing

  • do you need special strings to have it tuned like that?

  • @moses132049 For a high G you only need very thin strings. If you desire to tune any higher then that you will need either a shorter scale length or strings from octave4plus. However, octave4plus doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to making a long lasting string. It will tune to a high A or even a high B but it's very fragile and will be easy to break.

  • honestly you have inspired me as a guitarist so much, i have been working so hard to get to the point where i can learn some of your guys stuff, almost there :D

haha and as any fan child should say COME TO NORCAL

  • dang man the metronome is going off the wall what bpm did you set that thing at? sounds like 320 or something.....

  • I've been playing bass for years and after I saw this it really just made me want to play guitar instead..... You sir are a god!

  • thanks a lot man, appreciate it!

    -chris

  • how'd you develop your picking technique? did you use a specific exercise or did it just come from playing over time.

  • I used hundreds of exercises to work on picking. I'm actually releasing a Guitar Technique Book this Jan which has a ton of picking exercises for all techniques. Very excited about it, in case you are interested. -Chris

  • cool man. maybe i'll ask for it for x-mas as i'm trying to raise the cash for your concert january 30th

  • Cool man, sounds good!

    -Chris

  • How can I adquire it? :D

  • @scalethesummit -me want to buy it

  • hey chris, if you have any time, could you drop me a message explaining how your guitar tuning... its so different from standard eight string.

    thanks!

  • B E A D G B E G

    -chris

  • its like hes adding 1 low and 1 high string to the standard 6 guitar, not like the standard 8 string tuned in 4ths adding 2 extra basses like F#BEADGBE rigth?

  • right

  • Chris, what did you practice technique-wise when you were developing your chops, and is there any kind of guitar book, video or anything you can recommend that would help with chops-building?

  • classical technique, playing on the finger tips and using the least amount strain when playing. as for books and videos I studied with a private instructor and then did many years of college.

    -chris

  • awesome work, seeing you guys live in columbia md was motivating. Just wondering, do you have a pick preferance? how long have you been playing guitar?

  • thanks a lot. been playing for 12 years. yes I prefer jazz III picks from IntuneGP

    -chris

  • Can't fucking wait to see you guys in 5 days in Toronto!!!

  • sweet, hope you enjoyed that show!

    -chris

  • Man you guys were incredible!!!

You guys took a pic of the crowd. Are you guys going to upload all the pictures you took during the tour to your myspace, and or site?

    -Jordan

    -chris

  • that was a great show XD

  • Holy crap. You guys are great, pumped for seeing you in London. Great to see a band that's interacting with the fans like you guys are.

  • Thanks a lot dude, no plans for over seas tours yet, but hopefully soon!

    -Chris

  • Meant London Ontario, cept I forgot that the Ampitheater is in Toronto :P My bad, haha.

  • i just saw you guys in atlanta for pn09, i was right in front of you, and man, you guys, plus the rest of the show, really inspired me to improve my chops and challenge myself to be better

  • thanks a lot! glad to hear the show helped to inspire you!

    -chris

  • What gauge strings do you use to have that high g?

  • 08 for the high G

  • Jesus Chris, way to make all other guitarists feel worthless lol

  • oh, no way man! hope it inspires some to practice more!

    -chris

  • ok so a have a bunch of questions for you haha. how much was that guitar? how is the action/playability? does it make sweeping more difficult?

  • I dont share what I pay for my guitars.

Its an amazing guitar, having the extra strings just makes it more work to keep other strings quiet while sweeping, or playing anything really.

  • amazing. and i'm jealous.

  • and now up to speed... nice lick
