This is prime drumming. Jazz drumming at its finest. I remember when my old Jazz drum teacher told me; "right now you're playing that funk/pop/rock stuff, but when you get older and mature, you'll then begin to play Jazz..."
nice job sick bro All great drummers out there do not copy anything that i do this is because im just improvising every single song i do i improvise but if you do try and copy what i do ......you are my friend :D thank you people and please subscribe & comment on my videos for your own opinion :D click on my link XxxFastestDrummerxxX
Whats wrong with matched grip?!?!?!?!?! HAha jk, but thats how I play jazz. It is a lot easier to play solos that way. And before you call me dumb for playing jazz matched grip, ask yourself other than seeing jazz drummers played traditional, is there any rule that jazz is only allowed to be played traditional? I have always played drums (all styles) matched, so why should I sacrifice technique for playing a different way in a certain style and not another. Phew, sorry for the rant!
@rushour144 Honestly, i started out matched cause I played rock. But when I discovered jazz, I made the pain staking process of crossing over. I hated playing traditional on anything other than jazz cause I wasn't as good. Now i hate playing matched cause I can do so much more traditionally. I honestly think traditional is better, i even play rock traditionally now, I get so much more feel out of it than matched. If you practice traditional more, you'll find the same thing.
wow, when you become a great drummer you can use any grip you want to depending on how the style is. I play in the jazz band here at Purdue and I often switch between traditional and matched grip all the time, playing in pep band i use matched all the time! It all depends on what feels comfortable to the drummer. There's no rule limiting you to any grip, i play french on my ride.. so experimenting to get the best sound is also a reason to switch
i went up to jimmy cobb at the iridium to ask for his autograph, and he was super nice. he took his time with the autograph and didnt act like i was wasting his time in any way. an awesome drummer and an awesome guy
thats one strong lumberjack who knows how to rip it up

@drummerboypaddy
dude. Jimmy Cobb is not about chops.
Yes, any drummer COULD do that. But WOULD they?
Do you assess all music based on technical prowess? It's art, not sports.

@rushour144 Bill Stewart plays matched grip. That's all the proof I need to say you can swing with matched grip.

Jimmy Cobb is one of the nicest and most gracious guys you could ever meet.
And THEN....there is his drumming....wow.
Get the recording of Phil Woods & Richie Cole if you wanna hear Jimmy play REALLLLLY fast too.
Jimmy has it ALL goin on...he can do anything, and is the most musical drummer on the planet.
