  • How many model 5s are still left in Shawnee County? I just love the winddown of those old sirens. They go on forever.

  • Three. I know of at least two that were up, but was removed some years ago. I can still hear that same Model 5 heard at my new house, but not as loud as I did at that house:(. Kinda sad becasue it was the siren I heard growing up most of my life.

  • That is sad. I sure hope in the near future that they will come up with a new line of civil defense sirens such as the Thunderbolts or 2001--just a lower pitch. With all the natural disasters occuring in the near future, I strongly feel that is is high demand--that is if they can ever find the funding to do so.

  • That was a scary evening. Salina had some tornado damage. I had to go down to the basement twice that evening for tornado warnings. What kind of siren is that I'm hearing throughout the video? Sounds like a 2001. I live a couple blocks away from Meadowlark Ridge Elementary School in Salina. And when that thunderbolt 1000T siren goes off, it's pretty loud--I can hear it well from my house. Nice vid, btw.

  • Main siren heard is a Model 5, then a Thunderbolt 1000 and a 2001.

  • great vid!!!

  • Hard to believe this all happened just one day (or should I say 15 minutes) away from my 30th birthday!!! (June 12)

  • That was the same tornado that ripped through Chapman/Manhattan. Wasn't it? Something the neighbors don't want to wake up to in the middle of the night.

  • The same storm that went through Chapman/Manhattan was supposed to go thru Northern Shawnee County (thus the Tornado Warning and Sirens) but took a turn North-ward and hit Soilder, KS.

  • JayHawk29, was there damage in the county? 5 Stars! *****.

    Later!

  • No, but these storms came from Manhattan, Kansas where numerous homes were destroyed by a tornado.

  • Excellent video! I love how those sirens sound in alert!

  • Agreed. I love listening to the different pitches and intervals of the tornado sirens. I am musically inclined, btw. I had a theory instructor at WSU who said that was his favorite sound in the whole wide world. Sounds kind of erie, but interesting.

  • Oh, that's a Model 5. I thought it was a 500AT.

  • My county, since it is od shaped an maybe 180's squares miles or so said that they would sounds all the sirens for the county even if the tornado is off into LAke Erie which would include 3-5 miles off land. So if the waterspout is even off land, abd moving away, they will still sound all 190 sirens and piss off the public

  • That 12 port model 5 is pretty loud.

  • looks like you guys missed the heavy stuff that hit salina and manhattan.

  • Yo

I actually watched the tornado go through Manhattan live. It was one of the most insane things I'd ever seen before. I don't think I've ever been so scared for people before in my life.

Thankfully it wasn't any bigger than it was, but it is definitely an experience I will never forget. I might be going up there tomorrow to help people out, I wasn't sure if you wanted to get footage of the damage or not.

  • Archon: the bolt is dual tone

Response: Are you sure? This is not the same tbolt heard in my last tornado warning video.
