I never even knew about this version. It was a great game, I remember it very well. While it is a shame it doesn't have the original music it's still got quite a catchy tune and it suits the game.
i love both the original and remix, someone said why not the original music. So i got a good idea. Lets have a remix with exactly the same music and exactly the same graphics. HHHmmmm
this is an awsome game and even better on the psx/saturn, loved the graphics update, though you can play the original version too. Bubble bobble remains unaltered and in my opinion is the greatest 2 player platformer ever made.
Didn't like the Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands games for either PSX nor Saturn, they messed with the physics of Bubble Bobble, it just doesn't feel quite right, as for Rainbow Islands, it's ok, but 3 worlds weren't included (the 3 hidden worlds 7-10). Acclaim put their hands on this and tainted it. As for Rainbow Islands PC Engine CD, other than a downgrade in graphics a bit, it plays the way it's supposed to, has all the silver doors in the boss rooms, plus all the hidden items.
It's a shame the PCE CD RI costs so darned much these days as it's nearly a perfect conversion of the original arcade game. Ah well there's always Taito Legends and the Empire/XPlosiv Bubble Bobble Rainbow Islands Pack for PC, far outshines Acclaims effort on these two classics (yes there was also a PC version released back in the day from Acclaim, exactly like the PSX/Saturn conversions).
I think bubble bobble hasn't been changed and theres also the original version of rainbow islands on there.
Since you got a pc engine super cd-rom you could also check out that version. I think its pretty true to the original last time I remember with a really cool j-pop ending. Although that version really does offer nothing new
The sprites have a bit more shading in them for Bubble Bobble and you can't turn it off. Shame the last 3 worlds got left out of rainbow islands. As I love the enhanced graphics, Thank christ for mame huh?
When I had my NES version, it took hours on end to complete this. Also, Taito was known back in the day for making this uber long games that took hours of time, but here's the kicker...
If you didn't complete some kind of in-game sub-objective you would the infamous "Bad Ending". Rainbow Islands being one of the most depressing imo. You know..the "Help Us!!" letter if you didn't get all of the diamonds...Game Over. What a bad way to end a game..
does anyone know where I could get the soundtrack to this version?

Wow... I never though Rainbow Islands would be popular enough for a remake...
This looks so much smoother. I must play it.
Sega clearly knew what the jazz was all about. It's a damn shame they don't make consoles any more...

They probably change the music due to copyright reasons.

Wow I like the improved graphics in the Saturn version! Does Bubble Bobble have upgraded graphics too? Can you set the games to the original sprites?
