Thank you for posting. My grandfather, David Earl Pardue, was assigned the task of orchestrating this event and escorted Halsey onto the ship. Apparently, Gen. MacArthur told him everyone should wear their fatigues because, "We beat the sons of bitches in our khakis and we'll watch them surrender in our khakis." Thank you for posting.
tigerlilly7423... your Grampa is a Hero as are all the men and women who served during the war, I'm fortunate enough to be able to go see my friend, Battleship Missouri later this week when I take my first trip to Hawaii, but rest and know, I will be honoring your grandparents friends as I mourn the many friends my grandparents also lost during the tragedy of WW-II
@xIIIAlcopwnageIIIx Uh, have you ever heard of the commonwealth? They did a big part too. But of course in America they infest your textbooks with "we did it all" shit.
@joefarry1: Unfortunately the hull number is out of focus. There is a chance it is USS Nicholas (DD-449). Several Japanese naval officers served as pilots for ships of the Third Fleet entering Tokyo Bay for the surrender. We have a presentation on our Online Library for this event, but YouTube will not allow a direct hyperlink to it here in this comment. If you do a Google search on "JAPAN CAPITULATES - Rendezvous with Japanese Pilots" it should bring you to our page on this topic.
After watching footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor and of FDR's speech, I felt the need to watch this. My uncle was on one of the ships that accompanied the "Mighty Mo." I've never watched the actual surrender.
Wow. In color, it takes away the sense of this war being so far away and so long ago. It brings it to the present. Thanks for sharing this amazing footage.
I have watched other WW2 stuff in colour and like them it makes it seem so real. The people who were so cruelly occupied by the Japs back then must of thought they would never see them surrender.
And now Japan is a great a country. All countries touched by the Americans benefit greatly.
Film note: The American flag shown was the same one that flew in 1853 on the USS Powhatan during Commodore Perry's first expedition to Japan (per Wikipedia).
Pity pecival, eventho he was there seeing japs surrender to allied.. but the damage to the british empire in 1942 was so vast..

@joefarry1 It may or may not be the USS Buchanan as well. Buchanan was the destroyer that shuttled General MacArthur to and from the Missouri.

@joefarry1 Could it have been the Buchannan? in this video, it mentions it coming alongside the Missouri:
