you should be using an impact wrench for removing lugnuts, we use impact wrench for automotive work. Impact driver is for driving screws into wall (mainly).
great video! That the exact question I had in mind.... If I bought one, could it be used to take of the wheels on my car. I think I'll get me one of these :-)
I like the Impact as well, but for Impact Accessories I switched to the Milwaukee Shockwave Bits for Impacts. They last a lot longer than the Dewalt's.
holy smokes man. I am confused though. What is the difference the impact and hammer drills? I also bought a Milwaukee set they have with a drill, impact, and undercut - but it's only 12v. Would a 12 volt take off a lug? The guy was saying you'd be surprised because the power is 3x or something. I love their stuff. Thanks for the vid.
@ForDoverUSA Hammerdrill is for drill concrete. I'm not sure if 12v would do it, depends on the specs. After a year mine is having trouble taking off lugs. Also keep in mind if they are tightened over 100 ftbs or so it probably won't take them off anyway. Thanks for watching!
I have enjoyed your tool reviews and I will be investing in this Impact driver. But wanted to know the brand of your torque wrench you used in this video. Looks like heavy duty and I am looking to buy a good quality wrench.
@rbarill Believe it or not that one is a cheapo from Harbor Freight. Don't count it out though.. Grassroots Motorsports did a comparison of a Snap-on ($300), Craftsman ($100) and a HF model ($30). They tested the calibrations right out of the box.. HF was the best, Snap-On was the worst. The only question would be how long does the calibration last on the HF. I also use 2 Craftsman (3/8 and 1/4). They all seem fine to me.
Thanks for the review, have a Bosch Litheon Impactor and it worked well for a year before burning up, luckily it was a motor recall and it was replaced for free...I work in heavy commercial metal stud framing and this gun seems to have the balls to do practically whatever I need it too. Even though I got the Bosch fixed I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell that and get this!
thanks bud - definitely going to get one of these - as you point out - the 1/4 hex drive is useful for its primary function of screwing in or removing self-tapping screws, but w/ the adapter - good for ripping wheels off - def more handy then pulling out the compressor and aircat TH-1000. cheers!
This is not really the tool for wheel nuts. The impact WRENCH is what you want. The impact driver is for screws etc. But if it's working for you that good.
@ozmium71 I agree, I typically don't use it for wheels. Just giving an example of what it can do. A lot of guys use them at the race track once they loosen their wheel nuts a bit.
just a heads up for anyone considering this impact driver for doing wheel nuts.
I have one, and despite what this video shows, it WILL NOT do wheel nuts.
I've tried it on numerous cars torqued to various levels, and it won't do them! there's a reason it has a 1/4inch hex drive, it was never designed for wheel nuts!
@TheyDontWantMusic Have the same one? This one does it fine. Depends on how tight your lugs are also. This Nissan is spec'd at 100ft/lbs or so. For a truck, no it probably won't work.
I have the exact same impact driver and tested it on another car yesterday, and it won't undo them, even if it did, I wouldn't trust them to be tight enough not to slowly come undone.
@TheyDontWantMusic Odd. I've had mine for a over a year and it will still do them. No, I would not install a wheel without a torque wrench even with an air powered Impact.
@NaziJuice yeah i have this tool I am an apprentice carpenter and use this tool every day and have the heavy duty impact drill driver as well both have the same 3Ah bat and they work great, just today i used the impact driver all day fixing windows and it dident even use once cell on the bat it still had 3 bars at the end of the day if you are thinking of buying they are worth the money my boss went out and bought the same tools as me after using mine.
@NaziJuice The Milwaukee is good, but I I think the Makita BTD141 edges it out. Sacrifice a little bit of power (5%), but it can still manage to drive 6"x5/8" lag bolts, so it's more than sufficient for any normal work. It has the same benefits of the 2650-20 -- lightweight (2.3 lbs.), high-capacity battery (0.2 more Ah), etc. -- but it's got a superior LED (stays on for ~10 seconds after release, making it basically double as a flashlight) and a quicker charger (45 mins vs. 60 mins.)
This thing is awesome and has a surprising amount of power, but if you get this thing as a tire changer I would pass, especially if your using it at the junk yards where things can get really stuck on (not just wheels), milwaukee makes cordless impacts more suitable for more heavy duty applications, they have one that does 450 (1/2 drive) and one that does 525 ft lbs (¾ drive) which will do most anything, gunna be getting one of them soon.
@Johnnysshop if you actually listend to him in the vids the tool will do about 175ftp/tq he just sets his lug nuts to 110 because thats all you need so he prooved you wouldent need any other tool for changing tyres, he also prooved it will tighten over 110 easly with no cord or noisy comperssor, if i was changing tyres on cars several times a day i know what i would be using.
@conservativeMADman I did just that. Started with the M18 driver/impactor kit, added the circular saw/sawzall/ hammer drill kit, at that point the 1/2" impact wrench at $160 for the bare tool was a no-brainer. It is a beast compared to the impact driver, twice the size and weight. I took a 1/2x5 inch lag screw and drove it into an oak 4x6, the wrench sank it with no effort at all. When I backed it out the screw was red hot and smoke was coming out of the hole. Lug nuts would not be a problem.
Now that I watched this video im thinkin about getting one of those for when im doing some work on my car which is alot now and using at the slavage yard when getting parts alot quicker than a rachet
@86camaromike I'd get one for sure for the yard. At our local yards the car are on blocks and it's a PITA to get a rim off if you need to. Don't need to have the wheels on the ground with this booger..
@Johnnysshop at my junkyard you gota bring your own jack and sometimes gota get in hard to reach areas where i cant get a good grip on the tool thats where something like that comes in handy great review
Very nice gun man, I am impressed. Id love the Snapon 1/2" cordless impact but that set is like 400+ dollars. Atleast from my snapon guy. But u gotta spend money to make money right. Great review. I have the sears chuck adapters for my sockets. Havent used it on an impact but my DeWalt hasnt broken them yet.
@jekyll1776 Thanks! $400 big ones! I guess if you use it daily it would be more than worth it. I will only use this on projects around the house and possibly a bit at work but not much.
@Johnnysshop Yeah the set actually costs a bit over 500 from a snapon guy. Its definitely useful to zap off n on lug nuts around the shop all day long. Your gonna spend 300-500 dollars on an pneumatic impact gun anyway. maybe someday when i get my bill down i'll buy one.
@murdertriplexx XC is lithium, maybe yours is a standard batt? Lith has more power, doesn't lose charge (even sitting for months) and charges very quickly.
you should try the craftsman 20v lithium impact and actually I still havent broken any of my harbor freight impact adapter and still havent broken them and I took the front end of a car apart with the impact and no problems with the adapter
Ya they really are great tools. We got one of these and it will have no problem stripping out a 5/16 grade 5 bolt. They have some BALLS for a little tool. Id buy another in a heartbeat.
Milwaukee tools seem to be the best made and toughest I've ever used. My Milwaukee corded drill could break your arm if the bit got in a bind and you didn't have a good hold on the drill. It's dangerous to use the trigger lock button on it.
I still prefer air tools any day but the noise can be a problem.
@edzgarage I was always kinda skeptical of how well they would work really. Much better than I expected! Now I don't have to hear my wife complain about hearing the compressor. Should have gotten one long ago....
