@LambosWebs It probably would, had it been installed on that particular aircraft. The GPWS was made mandatory only in 1974, two years after the crash.
Tell you what - lets settle this once and for all- A lit cigarette will not light aviation fuel- or even petrol (gasoline) for that matter. Full stop. End of. If anyone wants I'll do a video myself to prove it....
everyone saying oh look he's smoking. with that amount of jet fuel in the vicinity the helicopters engines alone would have sparked it. already had it been an issue try it yourself by pouring some petrol and water in a small vessel and dropping a lit cigarette into it all that happens is it goes out . you need vapour in an enclosed space to be any threat of inflamation, if i remember from school 15 years ago
All you guys shut up about the smoking .the guy is working his ass off and helping people far away from the aircraft. If it was any of you .you be standing there saying omg what should I do ?
Doesn't look like a cigarette and definitely not a pen. I'm going with a previous comment that it's "a morphene powder tube used to disintegerate painful wounds for a short period of time." Makes more sense.
@MissWooHoo1 that's an oil spill. jet fuel is not oil-based, it's kerosene based. while the alligators wouldn't get covered in oil, they would probably get poisoned by the kerosene, with the amount that was spilled...
@Macinabit That's what I thought at first too, but looking again when he pulls it out of his mouth I think its a pen. At the very least its not lit since there's no smoke. If it was a cigarette then he probably just had in his mouth out of habit to calm his nerves. Smokers do that a lot & sometimes when they quit they put a straw or pen in their mouth like a cigarette. Its called "oral fixation", like an obsessive-compulsive behavior.
Had this L1011 been equipped with a simple GPWS system, none of this would have happened ! It would have yelled "TOO LOW TERRAIN", "GEAR", "FLAPS", "SINK RATE", "PULL UP". I think that would have been enough to get their attention !!
Yeah I saw the guy smoking too....but this show makes jet fuel look like gasoline or something. I'm in the aviation industry. Trust me, it takes a VERY hot spark to ignite JP-8. I've seen guys put out cigarettes and matches in JP8, though i wouldn't do it myself.
with new technologies come new failures... they always wonder how could a state of the art airliner crash?!?!? well cuz the more systems you have the more failures are possible systems are made to be relied on... so when they fail its catastrophic to prove my point this crash is mainly cuz of a system failure: autopilot failed to maintain flight level 2000
Actually one of the pilots hit the control column and turned off the altitude control, so the plane was just doing what it was told to do. Its not that the plane had a problem; the pilots should have kept an eye on the readings & been more careful. They lost situational awareness over that stupid light bulb. In fact, if the plane would have had even NEWER technology like the GPWS they would have been alerted in time to stop the dive. Better training is the answer, not fear of technology.
Check out the retard EMS rescuer right at the beginning of the clip with a cigarette dangling from his mouth despite the presence of thousands of gallons of spilled jet fuel in the area, lol.
You're both sort of right, but in this situation it would have ignited because the crash spilled the fuel everywhere contaminating it & some of it was vaporized.
@MLBExpert2007 he is nowhere near the jet fuel.. The guy with the swamp boat ferried the wounded to an area where they could be airlifted, there was no jet fuel in that area.. Can't blame a guy for having a cigarette after seeing dozens of dead bodies floating in a swamp.
I thought mythbusters busted the possibility of a cigarette lighting kerosine...and simply its impossible. Its like saying water will boil at 50celsius. Does it? I dont think so...
So may I please ask you the severe problem of smoking a cigarette with 1000s of gallons of kerosine??
I cant find one.
Unless you defy smoking people,
if so just say your hate smokers.
Dont take it out of context.
If you really thought it was dangerous... go read a book!
you need ofcourse a lighter or a match to smoke a cigarette.
that does make it dangerous. That is if he throws the lighter in the kerosine soaked water. And it has to be a zippo or else the the lighter goes bulb.
Still hardly unlikely it would cause a fire at the distance he was smoking that cigarette. But i understand the concern.
amazing that between them,4 experienced aviators could not detect the plane was going down

nah, if they tried landing without a front nose gear and it wasn't locked in place, pretty much everyone would be killed

it sad for the wildlife as well. that would poison the swamp and ruin the eco system. alligators would be covered in oil and die.
