@sh0k0nes Of course people will be having debates if you put something like this on youtube. It was 20 years ago but has not been on youtube for that long. It's all good cos at least it still shows an interest in the dance. Peace
@TRT7100 For me an interest in the DANCE would be to get out there and teach a new generation. The (club and competitive) dance scene in the UK is dire and needs help from those who know. I put these clips up to be a positive thing and share my experiences. Not for people to dis each other.
@sh0k0nes Hello - no not arguing, just a discussion. What would be great to watch is the group national uk jazz dance competition held in the Underworld club in Camden in '91. Any footage would be cool regards
No taking your shirt off is not a gimmick the same way leaving a toy on the floor is? My point is in the club then that's fine - this is a competition but also almost a show at the same time - add TV into that and that's why they edited it. Gimmicks are fun and yes they work - but why use them as tools when they arent really needed - especially for dancers as powerful as Gary and Marshall? it's a compliment btw Seymour :o)
@MrToosox Like the man said earlier it 's subjective but it's all good. Seymour??? thats my close west london brethren from way back in the day lol!! :o
One thing people are not taking into account here, EDITING!! So much of this battle was EDITED!! Marshall did some lightning footwork into a drop move, put a toy on the ground, clapped his hands and then the toy started dancing in front of the BIJ. Gary from TBK cut moves on the BIJ, and ended up leaving phony dog shit in front of them lol! Other moves from TBK were left out too for some reason? People would have understood the result more if the editing department did their job properly.
@TRT7100 I say leave out the toys - your dancin shud speak for itself. If you have to resort to leaving toys n plastic poo on the floor then your already on the back foot?
This comp was v close to watch on TV - two totally different styles, but battlin? BSK's have it.
@MrToosox The most famous jazz room battles and stories always featured gimmicks. It is called character and without it the battles would not have been as exciting or legendary. Each to their own I guess but is not taking off your shirts and throwing them at your opponent a gimmick too? The BIJ did that themselves at the end of the last round, so were they on their backfoot too?
@MrToosox Also - there are no shoulds and shouldn'ts when it comes to creativity or free expression in jazz dance or music- cos that causes limitation which is not natural for what we do as creators.
@MrToosox BIJ finished the last round by taking off their clothes while spinning then chucking their shirts at the BSK- that is a gimmick if ever I saw one, so were they on their backfoot too or was their dancin not speaking for itself?
I recognise the Brothers in Jazz from when they were at the All dayers in the early 80's:
Clouds Preston, Ritz, Legends and Rafters in Manchester, an the clubs in Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol and London. They were just practicing in the Jazz rooms then but they stood out. The Manchester boys especially knew what they were up against when the Leeds boys were in town. Fond memories :)
"Feets don't fail me now". The foot work is so amazing. Each dancer has tremendous energy and technique. This is London hip hop, meets Harlem jitter bug renaissance. The jazz music seems to propel every dancer. I love their style and attitude. These are young legs that know how to leap for joy.
Wikid- takes me right back to Sundays at Dingwalls. Any idea what year this was?
And to those who keep asking: Gilles tells you the name of the tracks if you listen- (the first's "Southern Roots" by Michel Legrand and the details for the Pointer Sisters track are shown on the screen.)
This is classic footage! I used to watch this battle every friday and saturday night to inspire me to go to the clubs and destroy other dancers - I have grown up now. I was a jerk. But these guys are some of my heroes
is this real

Oi.., jazzgirl stop stirring it back up again.
I was there too, and they lost on points.
I was done to promote UK Jazz Dance initially,
and turned into something else.
It's all water under the bridge now, and we'd like it to remain that way, thank you.
