Please do not judge Wunderlich by this awful soundtrack (thanks for the video, Gabba02, but the sound does not do it justice). If you want to know what this should sound like, listen to the DG recording of July 1966. Wunderlich's voice was crystal clear and steady as a rock. I have listened to hundreds of recordings of FW, studio and live, and have never once heard his voice crack. His recording of Lensky's second aria in particular is acknowledged as an incomparable classic.
This is a very precious document, as it illutstrates the enormous stage presence of Wunderlich. The sound quality is indeed very poor and trembling, since it was recorded on common magnetic audio tape, as was his last recital 1966.
Interestingly he does in fact not crack on "Dichterseele" - if you listen closely the orchestra cracks likewise at that point. He did of course - like any singer - crack on scarce occasions, however not here.
I seem to be in the minority, but I didn't like this Wunderlich version. It sounds so tremulous and he does crack on some notes but in general, his voice doesn't suit Tchaikovsky. Only one tenor seems to be able to sing any role in any language and sound great - Placido!
@Catoperatheater if you hear placido singin german....you want to die..for a native german speaker as me his speaking in german is horrible....so ur wrong!
Yes, there is another recording that he is cracking. It is a Rigoletto with german text during the duet with Gilda when he sings "sarai per te...". But, was one of the best voices I have ever heard. I really his fan!!! And, his cracks are just a prove ( a necessary prove) that he was human. THE GREAT WUNDERLICH - WUDERBAR!!!

The quality of sound is very bad, nevertheless, it`s overwhelming... when I hear those two voices I get goose bumps.

Wunderlich is just the best ever! Does anyone have an idea who is this Olga? Sounds like Fassbaender but can't see her face very well.

Fassbaender indeed.

@untamovaan I love german version of italian/french operas . for example - lovely Carmelites with Rothenberger and Emmy Loose from Viena.
