  • I hadn't realized how great this song is. Thank you! I prefer this to the original version.

  • excelente che!

  • Outstanding stuff. Love listening to Smiths tunes instrumental style.....

  • i love you moz but this is almost better this way!

    you're amazing!

  • Awesome. You've just earned another subscriber, mate! :)

  • Adorei!!! =)

  • This tune is a real tongue twister for guitar, I don't know how the hell Johnny came up with it .. You can tell it's something he heard in his head and just had to get out there. You did a fine job, Daniel.

  • omg

  • What kind of amp/pedal effects are used in this?

  • capo or not its epic!!!

  • I guess "sod" means "fuck" in King's English.

  • @wilsonatore Don't say it in front of royalty :P

  • May I ask what the chords are in the Verses please? I can't work them out by your hand position. Thank you.

  • hard to tune up a whole step without popping a string or two. i recon he uses a tone pedal. nice vid i play it a bit different.

  • i saw The Smiths play live on August 26, 1986 in Los Angeles. i was 18. it was my brother's 17th birthday. one of the greatest concerts of my life. keep it up. i love what you are doing with these songs.

  • thanks! i was singing quite contently to that :)

  • beautifully done!

  • Why does Daniel capo the second fret? Is it easier to play that way? Smiths videos don't show a capo...

  • Because JM (and also Andy Rourke sometimes) would tune their guitars up a tone, which has the same effect as a capo on the second fret.

  • Wow very impressive....one of my fav songs by them.

  • I love watching your videos dude

  • i love The smiths, and You!!!

    really.

  • Daniel, I had an awsome time singing this song with your tune kareokee style!

THANK YOU for uploading this! ;-)

  • good version

  • you're awesome

  • very very close dude. nice work!!

  • Daniel you are great, but you lie, this track is not on your website.

  • dude, you've got some serious skills

  • WOW, u r bloody GOOD!

  • The dog's knackers.

  • DUDE YOU ARE AWESOME! Got the flippin chills watching this!

  • Tabs? O: Great job

  • nice job kid

  • "A smack on the head is what you get for not asking"

    I love this song!!

  • This sounds like Moz has just nipped out for a beanburger!! Wikkid!!

  • :O

    *****

  • Constantly amazed how good Marr is.

  • Am I the only one in the world who thinks The Smiths are bigger than the Beatles? Man, those guitars are amazing. Good work Daniel on keeping this beautiful music alive.

  • well beatles were earlier than the smiths and made a pretty good foundation for po songs. the smiths layed a big foundation for deeper songs

  • No one is bigger than the beatles in popularity but the smiths might be better.

  • wich model gold top is this? it cant be the 56 re-issue because of the tuning heads?

  • The Smiths just totally kick me in the balls.

  • only j.marr could write such a great riff

  • Peter Buck...

  • Awesome. Thank you for helping to channel this amazing, powerful music -- especially since the actual song isn't on YouTube.

    Beautiful. Masterful performance.

Oh what joy there must be in creating that amazing sound.

thank you thank you thank you.

  • this is so cool!

    you are great dude!

i have been practicing it so much and i just cant get it right. this is so amazing!

  • Muito bom!!!

  • Id recognise that Gold Top tone anywhere! I have one, great for playing this sort of thing!

  • Can you play this just by listening to the song? What is your trick?

  • Dude... you just rock... you play sublimely good and have a nice arsenal hahaha

  • thats awesome! howd you get the sweet clean tone for the les paul? what do you use?

    xx

  • Nice clean sound, good quality cover!!

  • T-riffic!!

  • it does make u wonder how marr did it! every song sounds easy but is so complex he is a genius. nice cover btw!

  • that was good but can you believe that marr came up with that genious!

  • Incroyable!!!

  • just wow

  • Damn. Your GOOD!!!!!

  • I like your tags for this "meat is murder oh no it isn't it's delicious" lol.

  • Bravo!

  • I think I'm starting to enjoy these more than the originals. You are Morrissey, Marr, Joyce, and Rourke all mixed into one. Keep 'em coming!

  • F***in brilliant... Just like all ur vidz...

  • Well done boy

  • awesome playing, what chords are using?

  • Be honest, you are really Johnny Marr aren't you?

  • Fantastic thats white 70s funk right there! new wave great to hear The smiths brought that to the 80s,and people like blondie!

  • sweet as job man, you wouldnt have tabs for that? haha

  • Good... Three handclap^^

    좋습니다... 박수 짝짝짝^^

  • (b'.')b Awesomeness!!! TWO THUMBS UP!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Nice, but you took the urgency out of the bassline, changed the feel of it. Thats what makes the song!

  • Wow this is so so so good! I listen to this and feel like i'm listening to the original..

  • You're fantastic mate, you did Johnny and Rourke proud!

  • very good. Wish I could do that.

  • Nice Job Kid

    go on the road

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so great!!!!

  • who gives a shit if he's using a capo!!!it's ace!!

    "What difference does it make?"

  • wow, if i closed my eyes i would of thought that was the band playing, shit hot baby!!!!

  • gggg-.-.

  • DAMN BRO!! I wish I can play like that.

  • definitly not as good as some of you other smiths covers, but still impressive. dont think you really need a capo

  • Almost all Smiths songs are tuned up to F# for Morriseey's voice, they just tuned up to this when when live without a capo, if you See Bigmouth thats a 4th fret capo song but when live the capo is only at 2nd fret because of the F# tuning.

  • I play it in F# without a capo

  • Sweetness!

  • RADIO SHOW that is.. ahha

  • UNREAL! I want to sing over this!! CAN I? FIND ME.. I WANT TO TO IT AND PLAY ON MY RAIDO SHOW!

  • TWO rickenbackers?!?! lucky you. great video thank you for confirming i play it right

  • God I love this song!!!

I was trying to learn this bassline but it was tough trying to work out all the notes, I had to record the one phrase onto my FX unit, slow it down and loop it so I could catch every note Rourkey played properly.

Tags: meat is murder oh no it isn't it's delicious ?? [falls over laughing]

(yes I'm vegetarian and I do have a sense of humour)

  • Excellente !great job...sounds spot on to me.one of my fav smiths tracks too.funky as. i'm surprised with how chiming the LP sounds! is that the P90's pickups or did u string it nashville style or something??also can u divulge any secrets to how u learn the songs on geetar do u just use tabs or any software ? cheers.:O)

  • Good job, but... I think there's no need to use the capo at 2nd fret playing the bassline... I'm a bass guitarist and I've played since last june, so 7 months... and I can play as smoothly as you this bassline without the capo at 2nd fret... :S

  • It's easier without the capo, I just wanted to do it the same as Rourke, who tuned his bass up for gigs.

  • hey scar92face, i bet you can also play a mean skin flute without a capo

  • And the pink oboe!

  • Hey scarface, stop talking yourself up, i bet your as bad on the bass as you are with your English... sorry, but i hate when people boast

  • I can post comments better than you can, with OR without a capo

  • A crack on the head is what you should get for being so bloody good

    SHOCKING

  • Great job. It must take a lot of time to learn these.

  • nice job!!

but you swung it waaay to much

  • I had to - otherwise it wouldn't have meant a thung.

  • theres a rick in the background Reint25

  • The Capo is so doesn't have to de-tune the shit out of his instruments, so why the hell not use it! Other than that I think all this guys videos are cool! Nice Job!

  • you have a rickenbacker...im jealous =]

  • nice job...

  • dude wtf, a capo:S.. thats totally unnessecary

suck a simple bass line, no need for that shit.. ever.. but ok, besides that nicely done

  • It's either the capo or tuning his bass up a step like Andy Rourke used to do. So wtf yourself.

  • hes using the capo so he can just play open instead of pressing on the second fret, its easier to play that way

  • I still don't get what the capo on the bass does...but I guess it works, good job!

  • not at all disspaointing..but...i still wish you would have jumped on a drumset, that woul dhave made it complete

  • you're J. Marr

  • hats off to the smiths for creating this, but full marks to you. This is heavenly.

  • I could watch your vids all day. These Smiths songs sound so good as instrumentals.

  • im impressed

  • speechless

  • this is serious...good job!

  • outstanding. I've wondered for years what the hell johnny was doing on his guitar. ace job!

  • safeasmilk1972: Don't you know he doesn't do tabs, he likes you to learn by listening.

  • This is f**king ace!!

  • im sorry. can you post the tabs. or at least a hint.

  • where did you get the tabs?

  • what are you tuned to? I was 15 years old in 1987 and I would rewind the tape of this song over and over. this is the only song i would like to ask johhny marr to show me what he was playing. he is the best.

  • This song is in F#. Just capo up at the second fret and you're there from standard concert tuning.

  • my favourite bass riff of all time, especially on live versions

  • are you using a '62 reissue precision? good playing btw! i can play it and its bloody hard ot play it that smooth! you seem to play it with half tone?

  • It's just some ultra-cheapo Squier, nothing special. Good flatwound strings on it though. What do you mean by "with half tone"?

  • like the tone is half way upwards caseu it sounds very dull wiht not a lot of tone in it cause i cant seem to distinguish the sounds of the pick, i was also plying it back and i realised you could also tune up the E to an F# and simply play the same notes on the E two frets down, you tried that?

  • it's more likely due to compression smoothing out the sound, and It's got some chorus on it and that tends to soften it in the mix, also it's probably mixed too quiet as I was more proud of the guitar part! :) Not sure what you mean with the tuning suggestion - I play open notes on both the E and A strings so both need tuning up, hence the capo. Rourke plays it without open notes but I found that very difficult to do with a good rhythmic feel.

  • yea same its bloody hard but i see what you mean yea the quitar part is very good, perfect sounds to marr's sound, i mean only tune up the e to an f# so when you can play it open and then go on to the octave higher so no need for the capo if you see what i mean?

  • Actually I read in an interview with Rourke that he would tune his entire bass up a whole step (all 4 strings) for this song. Thus, he's actually playing the same thing as this video without the capo.

  • Song is funky as fuck.

  • I love all your vids playing the Smiths with your Rick

    this one is my favorite

  • This is not a Rick. ;)

  • david jones said it best! And finally some demystifying there by peeling all those wonderful layers of Johnny's guitar tracks back. Thank you!

  • what a feelin it is be to get a smiths song right

  • awesome, i love this song. ive seen johnny play this up high though, still sounds great.

  • lol, i like the tags to your video

  • awesome. i like the guitar switch-offs.

  • great stuff... got me back learning smiths tunes again. Do you play your bass straight into your laptop or record from bass amp, into computer

  • I record on a Roland VS2480CD, then sync the sound with the video clips in iMovie on a MacBook or MacBook Pro (whichever is handy... I have nearly as many Macs as guitars.)

  • are you using the built in amp modeling on the VS2480CD?

  • Yes, I usually start with the 'Clean Twin' patch and then tweak it to stop it overdriving too much.

  • The bass line is incredible, very nicely played. did you delete the first version of this video because it showed the bottom of your face?

  • Ha! No. I accidentally uploaded one of the previous videos again.

  • good stuff.I remember seeing them perform that and still ill on the tube and it was a really inspiring.Really punchy bass.I'll have a go at that tuning later. Thanks for these postings!

  • Nice job Daniel! Please keep it going! How did you learn this stuff? Time? More Smiths fans should check this out. More.. please!

  • Finally you posted it, i like it a lot. Good job witht the bassline too. 5/5 stars.
