  • How does your truck ride?

If there is anything else you can tell me about ride, suspension, driveability, cold starts, problems, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Again

  • @mydogisjohn I know this is really late but i'll respond anyway. The 1ton 2wd aren't to bad at all, but the rear is going to be very stiff obviously. The 4wd 1ton in my opinion is very rough, stiff, and the steering can be a bit sloppy. The 4wd's also tend to have more front end problems than the 2wd.

  • the speedo problem is a wire under the truck near the tranny. my truck did the same thing and when i was under the truck i saw that it was a little lose so i fixed it and now the speedo always works.

  • nice sounding 1st gen, advanced the timing yet ??

  • d250= 3/4 ton d350=1ton

  • Yeah people would give me weird looks, then I would have to explain to them what I am trying to say. Its a 3/4 ton truck with a 1ton rear axle under it. someone swapped out the axle when they put the flatbed on it.

  • oh okay.

    thank you for explaining.

truck sounds good love the straight pipe sound

  • all the axles are the same, unless its a dually rear

  • I got a neighbor with one of these old Cummins engines, I love when he leaves his driveway, he's got a stick (guessing 4spd) and just pins it. Nothing better to listen to.

  • Yup, I love to drive this diesel in the winter, nothing like the smell of burned diesel in the morning dew!

  • same problem with my '91 speedo. mine doesn't work at all though. you live in texas? i saw your inspection sticker.

  • Yup I live in Bulverde Tx. I think it was a double problem with the speedo. 1 it was reading way to fast like 35mph ahead. And 2 it worked better on cold days and sometimes the humidity could affect it. I think the speed was off because they changed the rear diff gears and didn't change the speedo gear. The other problem I think was just the cluster going out. I could have got another one for $90 but I sold the truck and got another toy.

  • It smoked pretty well stock, but you can flood out the highway if you tune up the power screw and smoke adjustment. But I must warn you, you need to have a way to keep an eye on your egt. Otherwise you can say bye bye cummins for good! I'm a diesel tech so I know a bit about these bad boys.

  • Your a diesel tech? You sure? I guess i just didn't know about the ve pump's "smoke adjustment". I've been trying to figure out what that damn screw is, now i know, it's that smoke adjustment screw. all you guys that buy a diesel just to blow black smoke at people need to buy a honda.

  • Lol dang right! The 'smoke screw' is actually the fuel boost control. Its what controls the amount of fuel 'extra' fuel is being used when more boost is being applied. Of course tampering with the power and smoke screw is a risk to blowing your egt's through the roof!

  • Its the diaphragm that sits on top of the ve, there is a metal tube that is connected to the intake manifold. When you adjust the screw is actually adjusting the spring tension on the diaphragm.

  • cool! I love the old 12 valves, they'll run forever!!! have a good one!

  • is your truck stock, cause im looking at buying one like and would like some info please?!?!

  • Yes its was stock. I do miss it, it got great mpgs and never flinched with 6000lbs behind it. If you get one just leave it stock for the most part and it will last you forever. I was getting around 18-20mpg on the highway at about 65mph. It never let me down. You can't go wrong with a cummins!

  • did it ever smoke or was it good about that?
