Gripen doesn't ned thrust reversers, because it has a VERY effective new system of braking at landing - the camards, the air brakes, and the elevons combine through the computer to stop (making more effective use of the wheel brakes through aerodynamics). calling Gripen a budget-Viggen is actually therefore an insult to a greatly improved aircraft.

The Gripen is an extremely strong, little aircraft.

@Bilderbergz the basic version has an engine that is way weaker than the american counterpart f-16, but it's also way lighter only 18,700 lb (f-16 26,500 lb and f-35 44,400 lb), next version of Gripen will have a engine with more than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio and will be able to supercruise as the only single engined airplane to do so

well the Gripen is the most manouverable fighter measured in both turn rate and turn radius while at the same time it manages to keep its energy. And the higher the speed is the turn icreases too. So all fighters try to place themself within Corner Speed. Which is the optimal speed for a tight turn. And the Gripen has something none of the other fighters have...an high developed data link. Which made the Gripen won every aerial encounter in the Red Flag exercise against all u bad ass F-15 =)

The main diffrence between gripen and american planes is the gipen have centre of gravity on back for better handling ,but it needs a full assistance of computers. The american planes like F16 have centre of gravity in a center of body.

Actually the F22 is considerably less agile than gen 4 fighters. A deliberate design decision was made to sacrifice manuverability for performance and stealth.

The USAF made this decision before with the F4 Phantom. At the time, the USAF thought that dogfighting was obsolete. This was a big mistake, hence the next generation fighters, the F-16 and 18, were highly manuverable, small and agile.

Only time will tell if the F22 design is the correct decision or a repeated mistake.

Well, actually the F-105 was designed as a low altitude high-speed strike aircraft wereas the role of the F-22 is air superiority.

I would still put my money on the NG gripen.

Well, maneuverability is only one of the major components of an good dogfighter. The F-15 has vastly superior performance (speed, climb, acceleration), it is no slouch in agility, and it can carry a very large compliment of long-range/short-range AA missiles. The F-16 and 18s are considerably more maneuverable than an F-15 yet both get clobbered by the F-15 in one-on-one training exercises.

In a twisting winding dogfight, sustaining moment it critical. Most aircraft loose speed, hence manuevering ability, rapidly as a dogfight progresses. The pilots of F-14s knew this all too well. If they let their speed drop, they would be a sitting duck and, even worse, the F14 wings would automatically expand and give away this fact away to the opponent.

The powerful F-15 has far more stamina than most lighter aircraft such as the F-16, 18, Mirage-2000 or (no doubt) the Gripen.

For sheer maneuverability the Su-27/33/35/37 family of aircraft are in a class of their own and no other aircraft can come close in this regard. Their helmet mounting targeting system also gives them a huge edge in twisting-turning combat.

It is interesting to see two different philosophies at the moment. The USAF is betting on speed and stealth whereas the Russians are putting there faith in dog-fighting. Only time will tell who is correct.

Actually the Russians are believed to be considerably ahead in AA missile development. Their latest operational missile, the R-77, is believed to have greater practical range and far better manuverability than the the AMRAAM. Though not as agile, the K-100 and R-77 have even greater range.

Depends on many factors, since each aircraft has their own strengths and weaknesses.

The F-15 has routinely clobbered the F-16 in 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 exercises. However in larger engagements it has always turned out 50/50.

I am guessing than in a large engagement, since the Saab offers better, more modern situational awareness and ergonimics for the pilot, the Saab will triumph. In a 1-on-1 the (vastly more expensive) F-15 would come out on top due to it's performance advantages.

The F-15 project was arguably the most expensive undertaking ever for a combat aircraft. At the time, the USAF was in utter panic over the perceived Mig-25 threat. The USSR in turn spent a staggering sum on the revolutionary Su-27.

It was never intended to be the best fighter, but to be the best swing role combat aircraft in the world, and thats something I think it achieve pretty well. The JAS is what a modern military aircraft must be, cheap, reliable, flexible, capable to interact well with other aircrafts and to fight along side with them in joint operations. And about stealth I think the Gripen's small size and radar jammer are going to work just fine. It worked against other aircrafts in Redflag Alaska and Italy.
